href="http://www.slate.com/id/2270651/" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slate.com%2Fid%2F2270651%2F','http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slate.com%2Fid%2F2270651%2F')">http://www.slate.com/id/2270651/) Even committing crimes or being involved in illicit activity is not a disqualifier as seen with the example of David Vitter running and likely winning in Louisiana despite his dalliances with an escort.

People like to expand the question of who is qualified to understanding of issues and personal life experiences. Howard Dean touted his travels around the world as proof that he was qualified to be President and Mitt Romney touted his past business experience as a qualifier. George W. Bush’s experience as an oil man was used as a qualifier and a disqualifier in 2000 depending on whether you liked him or hated him (and of course there can never be an in-between in politics.) People on the left might say that a candidate isn’t qualified for office because they don’t understand the science behind global warming while conservatives may say that a candidate isn’t qualified because they don’t have an adequate understanding of the tax code.

Even with this, I find it hard to see how Corbett and Onorato wouldn’t be considered serious, well-qualified candidates for governor. One is the state attorney general and the other is the county executive of the second biggest county in the state.

In the end, when somebody says “Candidate X isn’t qualified,” keep in mind that what they likely mean is that they just don’t like the candidate or disagree with their views.

So, with a few weeks left in this election, don’t worry about whether the candidates are qualified for office. They are. Just decide who is best prepared, who has the best ideas, and who you think will move the state and country forward.

Then you’ll be a better voter, but no less qualified for the job.

LEFTOVERS: A guv debate, more Senate ads, a Callahan spot, cops for Fitz

Dan Hirschhorn's Blog

From the Blogs

Home Featured

Charlie Dent

Dan Onorato

Joe Sestak

John Callahan

Mike Fitzpatrick

PA-15

PA-8

Pat Toomey

Patrick Murphy

Tom Corbett
<guid

The questions aren’t designed to sway respondents one way or another. Others questioned the results because they came from a Democratic poll firm, commissioned by Democratic-leaning groups. That’s a leader larger than the ones documented recently by both candidates’ internal polling. Fifteen percent of likely voters are still undecided, and Fitzpatrick’s lead is smaller when all registered voters are polled, but remains formidable at 10 percent.

The poll’s release comes as the Bucks County district is increasingly seen as a fierce battleground by political forecasters and insiders. Murphy, sporting a large financial advantage, has been advertising heavily in the expensive Philadelphia media market. But only 37 percent of voters in the district rate President Obama’s job performance positively, and Murphy has become very much tied to the White House in the minds of many voters.

Almost half of registered voters in the district believe it’s time for a change after two terms from Murphy.

The survey of 464 voters, conducted Sept. 14-19, had a margin of error of 4.5 percent. The margin of error for the 379 likely voters surveyed was five percent.

<a
