  • Meehan delivers commencement speech at Catholic University in Aston

    May 18, 2009 at 2:40 pm

It’s almost summer and it is getting to be graduation time. Gubernatorial hopeful Pat Meehan was invited to make an appearance at one graduation ceremony, where he delivered another warning message to corrupt politicians and CEOs.

The warning came during a commencement address at Neumann University, a Catholic college in Aston. The Daily Times reports that Pat Meehan spoke of a general lack of public trust in American institutions.

“It started in corporate boardrooms symbolized…

  • Specter may need to waffle again on the Employee Free Choice Act just to stay afloat

    May 15, 2009 at 10:28 am

Senator Arlen Specter told The Associated Press recently that “prospects are pretty good” for a compromise on the Employee Free Choice Act. Specter also told The AP that he is “hard at work trying to find some way to find an answer,” a tough task considering the political quandary he is in after wavering on his original stance toward the card-check bill.

Pretty soon, Specter’s office won’t be working hard just to find a compromise.…

  • Curt Schroder aims to reinstate gambling industry campaign contribution ban

    May 14, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Last month, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned legislation that banned gambling industry insiders from making campaign contributions. The ruling addressed a semantic flaw in the legislation that had the effect of only excluding “large” contributions from being made, thereby making a complete ban untenable.

The ruling comes at a time when Philadelphians are fighting the city and the state to prevent the installation of two casinos. The fierce debate has mobilized people from all levels…

  • Gun owners endorse Pat Toomey: A Philadelphian’s heart sinks

    May 13, 2009 at 6:47 am

In the race for District Attorney here in Philadelphia, strict gun control measures have been advocated by all of the candidates, who take hard-line stances on the illegal purchasing and resale of handguns.

    This is progress for Philadelphia.

It is also why a Philadelphian’s heart sinks when he sees the headline: Gun Owners of America Endorses Toomey.

  • Sestak on Specter’s endorsements: No king-makers in America

    May 12, 2009 at 8:59 am

Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) made an appearance on Fox News yesterday in which he stated that a run for Senate is very likely.

“I’m very much leaning towards it,” he said

He also responded to questions about President Obama, Gov. Ed Rendell, and Vice President Joe Biden, and their assumed endorsements of Arlen Specter. “There’s no kings in America, and certainly no king makers,” he said, repeating a talking point he’s been using increasingly often.…

  • Chocola of Club for Growth offended by Specter’s defection

    May 8, 2009 at 9:46 am

The Club for Growth issued a vehement denunciation of Arlen Specter’s decision to change parties a little over a week ago. After reading the statement, I thought that it’s severity was somewhat amusing, so

  • Ridge: A stronger force to compete with Specter

    May 7, 2009 at 11:58 am

Tom Ridge, the former Governor and Secretary of Homeland Security, is flirting with the idea of running for Senate against Arlen Specter. If Ridge decides to run for Senator, Specter will have to work harder to win the seat.

In a recent Quinnipiac poll, Specter is shown to currently lead against Republican Pat Toomey by 53 – 33 percentage points.

If Ridge decides to run for Senator, however, Specter will only have a 3 percent…

  • How school districts beef up during a recession

    May 6, 2009 at 6:50 am

A little over a week ago, School District Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman presented Philadelphia’s 2010 budget to the School Reform Commission. The budget includes $3.1 billion in operating costs, as well as a $232 million capital budget, and it represents a glimmer of hope in otherwise dark economic times.

The glimmer of hope comes from Gov. Ed Rendell’s 2009-2010 education budget, which increase investments in education and aims to provide college tuition assistance to families…

  • Meehan’s act for intermission

    May 4, 2009 at 8:46 am

Pat Meehan has been known to be an aggressive prosecutor of white-collar criminals, his most recent accomplishment being the successful indictment of former state Senator Vince Fumo (Meehan resigned as U.S. Attorney before the case went to trial). Fumo, charged with and later convicted for conspiracy to defraud the state Senate and two Philadelphia non-profits, is another relic of Philadelphia’s sleazy political landscape. There’s little doubt that his conviction will bolster Philadelphia’s confidence in its…
