Report: Marino resigned amid DOJ probe

Report: Marino resigned amid DOJ probe

A new report indicates that Republican Tom Marino resigned as U.S. Attorney because he was being investigated for giving a personal reference to a businessman his office was investigating.

The Morning Call, citing an anonymous source, reported this weekend that Marino was under investigation by the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility “for allegedly violating several department guidelines.” That probe was prompted by the revelation that Marino had provided a reference for businessman Louis DeNaples’ gaming reference while his office was scrutinizing DeNaples.

Marino’s relationship with DeNaples has proven a political headache for the northeast Pennsylvania congressional candidate, and the weekend headline was just the latest in a string of bad-news developments for Marino’s bid to unseat Congressman Chris Carney (D-10). Marino initially said he had permission from Justice Department superiors to give DeNaples the reference, but he and his campaign have offered contradictory statements about that permission, and the department says it has no record of any such authorization.

The latest report is the clearest evidence to date that it was Marino’s reference for DeNaples that prompted his exit as U.S. Attorney.

Tom Marino is unreal. I have never seen any candidate as unethical as him!

I can’t wait to see Congressman Carney win a third term.

He lied right to the face of the people living here in 10th. Unbelievable.

He’s been lying since day one! I am from Lycoming County and remember when Marino was our DA – what a real scum bag! I regret ever voting for this man. He’s become too drunk with power and money. This Jason Fitzgerald that works for him…I’m just confused as to how a young man of his integrity could work for a common crook like Tom Marino.

Power corrupts, I suppose. I didn’t support him last time, but my vote is definitely going for Congressman Carney this November.

Well it’s clear now what Marino was hiding. But there is sure to be more. I just read about him backing another criminal while he was DA. Hey OMR, was this common knowledge in W’port? If so I can’t believe he will get a lot of support from anyone who thinks for themselves. The party hacks will stick with him as well as the wing-nuts but there are a lot for folks in Central PA who despise corruption and don’t want to be embarrassed.

Issues anyone? Why won’t Chris Carney talk about the issues? I am from Lycoming County too and know that Tom Marino is a good and honest man!

Hey Howard. Is it not an issue whether your candidate is a public liar and was so unethical that he had to resign public office? I know that you’d like to change the subject; but don’t make it so obvious next time.

Anyone else hear the fat lady warming up in this race?

Howard – Marino and ethical in the same sentence are nothing but a joke.

Reality – Democrats have the registration in the city, but the Republicans have the huge advantage county wide. That is how he got elected DA.

I say Carney wins this by at least ten. The only people who will vote for him are people who let the party tell them what to do.

Carney is respected, intelligent, and actually has Pennsylvania values.

I voted for the young Commissioner Derk in the primary. Ar least he didn’t have that kind of baggage.
