Avoiding Schneller, Meehan skips a debate

Avoiding Schneller, Meehan skips a debate

Citing the presence of a conservative third-party candidate, Republican Pat Meehan has backed out of the last scheduled debate in the competitive 7th Congressional District.

Meehan’s campaign decided to skip the Oct. 14 debate hosted by the League of Women Voters after the group said it would allow independent Jim Schneller to participate. Schneller has not been involved in previous debates between Meehan and Democrat Bryan Lentz. He got on the ballot thanks to help from Lentz’s supporters—a fact Meehan’s campaign has used to try and paint him as an illegitimate candidate.

“It is well documented that Jim Schneller got on the ballot thanks to a coordinated effort between Bryan Lentz and his supporters,” Meehan spokeswoman Virginia Davis said. “We’re not going to debate two people who got on the ballot thanks to Democrats.”

The decision by Meehan’s campaign marks the latest Schneller-related flare up in the bitter, suburban Philadelphia race. It is also the second time this cycle that a Republican House candidate in Pennsylvania has voiced trepidation about joining debates with a third-party conservative candidate.

Lentz’s campaign quickly pounced, saying Meehan was avoiding the spotlight after a recent Havertown debate in which Meehan struggled with his public performance.

“Pat Meehan has demonstrated once again that he believes he is entitled to be a Congressman and doesn’t actually have to explain why,” Lentz campaign manager Kevin McTigue said. “Pat Meehan will meet behind closed doors with the extreme Tea Party but he won’t take public questions from groups like the League of Women Voters. It was clear from the Havertown debate that Pat Meehan lacked a basic grasp of his talking points, let alone the issues.”

Meehan’s campaign said it’s “ridiculous” to attribute its decision to his recent debate performances.

“That’s Bryan Lentz trying to make this a charade,” Davis said, “a debate over debates.”

Regardless of the reason, what had initially promised to be a packed debate schedule now will end with a whimper. Meehan’s campaign unilaterally scheduled its own series of debates earlier this year, touting that it had put together an “unprecedented” slate of 10 such events. But several have not materialized, and notwithstanding a possible Chamber of Commerce forum still in the works, it appears that only four debates will have taken place before Election Day in the state’s most competitive House race.

The real reason is that Pat sweats, gets nervous and can’t form a sentence in a debate or at a podium in Harriburg while Lentz is crisp, comfortable and confident. Even the reporters covering the events uncharacteristically cite Meehan’s inability to communicate. Meehan’s strategy is to now hide under a bridge until 11/2 and let his TV ads work. You won’t see him anymore.Davis and RCCC can’t take any chances with him anymore.

But, Oxman has more than enough footage of Meehan-speak for great TV commercials. Should be a fun month even with Meehan hiding in an undisclosed location.

This is just a great excuse for Pat Meehan to avoid sweating another debate – Watch this:

Does he look at all like Congressional material?

If Meehan doesn’t want to show up and debate with Tea Party conservatives, then what’s he planning to do in Congress when he would have to debate them over programs to help the 7th district?

    As for this:
Meehan’s campaign said it’s “ridiculous” to attribute its decision to his recent debate performances.
I guess the underlying thinking is: We already factored in Meehan’s piss-poor debate skills when we originally agreed to debate, because we couldn’t publicly give that as a reason to avoid them. Now, we just want to avoid being shown up by another conservative.

Didn’t they have another debate since the Havertown debate? Was Meehan’s performance equally shakey? If it was, where was the web video highlighting that?

I didn’t see that debate, but somehow I bet that if Meehan had another rough day, Lentz would have made much more noise about it instead of simply refusing to mention it and instead referring back to the previous debate.

It’s a sad testimony to the state of your campaign when your only plan for victory is to draw out your opponent in public as many times as possible with the desperate hope he misspeaks and gives you fodder for stupid web videos.

    Rick,

You’re either ignorant and uninformed or your intentionally dishonest.

Lentz and Meehan debated on NBC10 on Saturday morning. “RCCC” (what is that? I assume you mean NRCC, but at least make an effort to hide your ignorance by checking your acronyms) and “Davis” didn’t do anything to prevent that, did they? And Meehan’s performance was obviously strong, otherwise we would have seen another web video highlighting his fumbles.

So which is it. When you said they wouldn’t “let” him debate after the Havertown debate, were you lying or are you just stupid?

So wait a second..your guy just lies better is what your saying. I won’t take a state car….until I want one. I won’t trake a per diem….until the day I get sworn in. I won’t raise taxes in harrisburg…until Ed and Dwight tell me to. I won’t raise taxes in Washington….until Nancy and Barack tell me to..
Yes let’s have more debates so Bryan can lie in “crisp comfortable confident” fashion while his lackey Jim Schneller looks on adoringly.

Well, it looks like Bryan Lentz will just have one less forum in which to make promises to the electorate that he can break as soon as he takes office!

What a joke Meehan is. This is so completely insulting. He is a little boy who didn’t get his way so he is taking his ball and going home. Bryan Lentz fought a war and was a criminal prosecutor, this punk can’t debate Schneller? Lentz=Hero, Meehan=pathetic coward.

What ever happened to the investigation into Meehan’s forged nominating petitions? The more you learn about Meehan the worse he gets. No wonder he’s trying to hide now.

Ah yes the burning issue of our time. Forget about the debt. Forget about unemployment. Forget about the governemnt bailouts. All will be well when that petition issue is solved. I haven’t slept one night since it happened.

Meehan is a terrible speaker, gets angry easily and is barely able to communicate his talking points let alone answer questions from the public. Except for carefully vetted appearances he has avoided contact and questions from the public. He recently turned down an opportunity to debate at Widener with questions from the business department. He’s a guy with a lot of dough and a lot of connections but not much internal fortitude.

  13. DELCO OBSERVER

    Oct 5th, 2010

Has anyone seen any polling on this race? maybe Meehan has a lead in some poll and doesn’t want to open himself up to some off the cuff gaffe…could be a smart political startegy but wreaks of cowardice.
Why is Meehan afraid of Schneller, anyway? Schneller seems like a loser that will actually help Meehan look more moderate, which may help with moderate repubs and conservative Dems.
Well, Lentz and Schneller can spend their time piling on Meehan at the debate…the empty podium with his name plate will make a great advertisement piece.

Saying democrats got Jim Schneller on the ballot is like saying a substitute second baseman got the Phillies into the playoffs . . .

It seems like the Lentz campaign manager asked all his interns to continously write lies about Pat Meehan on every single article that has Pat Meehans name in it.

The facts are right in front of everybody how wrong Lentz is on issues, his ads are wrong about Pat Meehan.

Jim Schneller was clearly put on the ballot by democrats that helped get Lentz on the ballot. If you cannot accept that with the information on paper in black and white then you should go back to school and get an education.

We got caught and now we have to accept it.

Just like Joe Sestak served our country well in the navy and then not well in Congress
Lentz did serve our country well in the army , didn’t serve well in Harrisburg, and you sure know he would not serve us well in Washington.

Well Lentz interns reply to this, We did it all the time against republicans and they did it back and it gets old after a while.

Once was a Loyal Democrat until Obamas and Sestaks poor performance in Washington. Along with Lentz’s poor performance in Harrisburg.

    Bob-
    1) Please identify a “lie” about Meehan that you believe was written by an intern under the direction of Lentz’s campaign manager

    2) Lentz happens to be right on the issues.

    3) Meehan showed himself to be a sweaty, incoherent mess in Haverford. (check the tape)

    4) Schneller might have had enough signatures on his own. The Lentz supporters just put him enough beyond the top to ward off a challenge.

    5) Who’s denying your “black and white” evidence that Lentz supporters helped Schneller? Those Dems are damn proud of the work they did and they put their names on the record as petition circulators. I sent out 300 emails that weekend from my personal list of 7th district Dems encouraging them to circulate petitions.

    6) Why wouldn’t/shouldn’t they get someone on the ballot highlight the differences between Meehan and Lentz (and draw votes away from Meehan)? It’s legal and a smart move.

    7) Joe got kicked out of the Navy for not serving it well (or rather not treating the men under his command well).

    8) Lentz has done a fine job in Harrisburg.

Maybe Pat doesn’t want to be seen with an actual conservative. Your small government/ low tax candidate is from Upper Darby- the Republican fortress that is only kept afloat by some of the highest property taxes to pay for its high per capita government.
