Poll: Toomey up 7 points
Republican Pat Toomey is leading Democrat Joe Sestak by seven points in Pennsylvania’s competitive Senate race, according to a new poll.
The Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday showed Toomey garnering 50 percent of likely voters, compared to 43 percent for Sestak. It was one of the first polls in which Toomey hit the 50-percent mark. Only seven percent of likely voters are still undecided six weeks before Election Day.
The poll echoed most other public surveys, which for months have found Toomey winning by high single-digits or low double-digits. As in other polls, Toomey’s edge is fueled by his strength among independent voters, who choose him 54 percent to 36 percent.
Both candidates enjoy similar name recognition and favorability ratings. But a majority of voters want their next senator to oppose President Obama’s policies—bad news for Sestak, who said during the primary that he wants to be Obama’s greatest ally in the Senate. A majority disapprove of the president’s job performance.
Toomey leads among men, but Sestak fares better with women.
The survey of 684 likely voters, conducted Sept. 15-19, had a margin of error of 3.8 percent.

Bill Healy-
Did you just say a day or two that Toomey was “stuck” below 50?
This is why I told all you Sestak lemmings (heading off the cliff) before the primary, that Sestak couldn’t capture the middle from Toomey. As I pointed out, Specter not only “owns” the middle, he gets royalty checks on his patent.
Sestak is running the party aground. Of course, after November, he’ll be the first one to abandon ship and stay at home in Virginia.

1) There was a lot more variability in the Sestak/Specter primary polls.
2) The primary polls didn’t correlate to a national trend.
3) The Senate primary polls were independent of the other races taking place.
4) So far, I’m still right that Sestak was the weaker choice against Toomey because Sestak can’t capture the middle.
5) My prediction was biased by my being a resident of SE PA and knowing both candidates (which is why SE PA DID pick Specter over Sestak). I failed to take into account the ignorance and stupidity of Dems elsewhere in the state and their desire for short-term revenge over long-term success. SE PA region got it right.
6) Bill, how is your “track record” with your recent claim just a day or two ago that Toomey was “stuck below 50″.
Joe ran in the Primary with “Democrat for Senate” and claimed he was the one to lead the ticket. He didn’t mention “lead them to defeat”. Joe loves leading men into harm’s way (he says it all too often in a creepy way).
Well, I’m proud to have fought and voted for and actual leader, like Specter. Joe’s got followers, but he’s no political leader.

Actually, you are completely incorrect. During the primary I had found a site that calculated a political leadership score by how many bills a Rep got sponsored, without having to make a reciprocal sponsorship.
Specter had one of the highest scores and Sestak had one of the lowest.
Sestak has repeated screwed local politicians and failed to deal forthrightly, cooperatively and respectfully with other key Dem across the state. Sestak likes to be in charge, but he’s no leader in the political world.

Diano I must say I admire your persistence. When you go against someone you lock your jaw like a an attack dog and shake your prey until your break their neck.

Starting to wonder why Diano hates sestak so much that he gloats over what he perceives as Sestak losing…is he overcompensating for something?

Thanks. (I think)

I just like seeing people get their just desserts. Joe’s comeuppance is long overdue.
I’m not happy that we are getting Toomey, but getting rid of Sestak is going to be healthier for the party in the long term.
If the DSCC is smart, they will realize this race is a lost cause and put their resources into tight races that are winnable.
The only thing I’m “overcompensating” for is the silence of my Democratic brethren who agree with me, but are afraid of challenging Sestak publicly on who and what he really is. I go to Dem events all the time, and while I’m not too popular with the Sestak supporters, there are plenty of Dems who don’t like Sestak and thank me for telling it like it is (and not hiding behind an anonymous handle).

“a week of Toomey would devastate….”
Put down the crack pipe. Toomey would be one vote, in a filibustering GOP block vote of over 40. Same as it’s been, so one week of Toomey isn’t going to change the status quo.
If you want to be “objective”, then LOOK AT THE POLL NUMBERS in Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois and Nevada. http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/
Look at the “Senate” tab for the takeover chances and “objectively” tell me whether its worth losing these 4 seats on a longer-shot like Sestak in a more expensive media market.
Would you RATHER have Sestak (no-Toomey), but also lose Russ Feingold, and have Reid lose to Sharon Angle instead?
How many Senate seats are you willing to sacrifice to get Sestak and avoid Toomey (and fail in the attempt, anyway)?
If Joe actually cared about the party, he wouldn’t ask the DSCC for a dime, but rather ask them to spend that money on the other 4 key Senate races instead.

Lost cause, David?
Sestak has always been a strong closer and a new poll out today shows that Toomey’s lead is down to 45-42. Sestak will win this one, wait and see.
