Lentz takes to the airwaves with first two ads

Lentz takes to the airwaves with first two ads

With 48 days until voters go to the poll, Democratic congressional candidate Bryan Lentz is taking his campaign to TV screens with two new commercials.

The 30-second spots were set to hit the airwaves in the 7th District Tuesday morning. Though the size and scope of the first ad buy was unclear, Lentz’s war chest and the expensive Philadelphia media market would indicate that the first buy will be relatively small. Though he is expected to face a financial disadvantage against Republican candidate Pat Meehan going into Election Day, Lentz bought TV time first.

One of the ads is a basic biographical spot, as Lentz seeks to build name recognition against the better-known Meehan. It recaps his past as an Army Ranger, and paints him as a foe of his party’s leadership in Harrisburg. “I spent the last four years fighting the bad guys in state government,” Lentz says in the ad, embedded below. “And I’ll do the same thing in Washington.”

The other ad seeks to frame a direct contrast between the two candidates, pointing to Meehan’s support for extending all the Bush tax cuts to argue that he’ll also increase the deficit. “Unlike my opponent,” Lentz says in the ad, embedded below, “I don’t think we should add to the deficit so some millionaire can keep his tax cut while the rest of us get nothing.”

The race is currently No. 1 on the pa2010.com Congressional Power Rankings. Both ads will be fact-checked later as part of pa2010.com‘s new AD WATCH feature.

With the money disadvantage Lentz has the only way he makes a big ad buy is if it runs in the middle of the night on basic cable.

And it is really reassuring that Lentz fought “the bad guys in state government,” after taking their taxpayer funded help to get elected.

    J. Hughes-
Lentz has more than enough money to get his message out to voters in the district. In past elections, the Dems raised under $100,000 and had no chance against the Delco GOP machine, which would out-raise us 10 or 20 to 1.

Lentz is not getting blown away in fundraising by Meehan. The only thing working against Lentz is the overall political climate, so he’s got a headwind instead of a tailwind.

This is a competitive race and Bryan is getting plenty of fundraising help.

This is a far different approach than the “don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes” tact that the Campaign Group employed with Joe Sestak’s primary against Specter. That was a shock and awe ad camapign. This looks more like a whimper.

Campaign Group is also doing Lentz’ campaign media, yet the tactic is completely different despite candidates who face similar huge name recognition disadvantages.

So what else is at work here? My guess is that Lentz recognizes he needs to boost his name recognition NOW so he does better in polling if he has any shot at being the lucky recipent of DCCC camapign ad buy — which is becoming scarcer by the moment as Dems look to shore up suddenly vulnerable incumbents.

So Lentz isn’t actually playing to win the big game, he is playingg to win favor with the DCCC so he can get their money. Not the best of strategies but I guess without the DCCC money he’s toast so he needs the short term boost.

But in reality, he’s just pissing money away — making a gamble with his limited camapign cash to try to get the DCCC to rethink not dumping money into his race. Hell of a way to run a campaign.

I wonder…what are you smoking? it is surely not legal in the Commonwealth!
Lentz’s ads are very good and do a nice introduction and tell a little of his story. Something tells me the compare and contrast with Meehan is the first in a series. Also, rest assured that if he is airing now, they have more in teh can and know how much it will coast to air and already have the money in teh bank or committed…that’s how Lentz rolls.
He will also get DCCC money, just like Meehan brags about his being a “YOUNG GUN”-btw-how sad for a former DA to glorify guns and the use of guns in a county where gun violence is such serious problem.

    Sick of it all –

You didn’t answer the question, why the vastly different campaign appraches then by the same media consultant for Sestak vs. Lentz. This approach with Lentz is very different from the way the Campaign Group typically rolls.

Me thinks Lentz is nervous so he pushed them to jump the gun. Always dangerous when an inexperienced candidate like Lentz is telling his media consultants what to do. Maybe that’s why Lentz’ old campaign manager bailed — too much micromanaging?

    Wow, Mr. Sick,

Into assumptions much?!? Do you have a mole in the Campaign Group to come up with such a wild inside fantasy? The “vastly different campaign approaches” may have something to do with the vastly different size of the respective constituencies involved. Sestak ran statewide with a huge disparity in funds; of course he would “don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes”.

    Wonder boy/girl-
You must not know Lentz at all if you think he is ‘nervous’. The guy has nerves of steel, and a sense of humor to boot. Airborne rangers don’t sweat the small stuff.
These ads represent the story not adequately being told in the press, who give credence to Kendro’s vapid attacks on a regular basis.

I see the Lentz interns are back at it again. Seems like I struck a nerve.

The Campaign Group is well known for holding back ads until the last few weeks of the campaign and then hitting hard. If you can’t see the difference, then you are in denial.

And yes, If the DCCC is cutting back on ads for an incumbent like Kanjorski and are performing “triage” on which INCUMBENTS to support or let hang out to dry, I would think Lentz has every right to be scared they are going to cut him, especially with polling showing him down 20 points.

The DCCC has limited resources and will want to invest in races that they think they can actually win. Lentz’ early ad but shows he is worried about that and is trying to improve his polling numbers — short term — so he can make his case to the DCCC. Penny wise, pound foolish.

I wonder too tiger… it seems all Republican Campaigns are the same whiny song… “honk if you hate Pelosi”. It must be strange for you to see a party where every candidate doesn’t say the same exact thing and has their own minds. It must be frightening for you to see people run for office with ideas….
What else I wonder about is Pat Meehan was Bush’s campaign Manager in PA, Arlen’s Campaign Manager, and Santorum’s campaign Manager… so you would think with all that awesome resume of campaign management, he would be able to run a campaign of his own…. he has a sad trip to Harrisburg to get burnt by Bryan on the legislature floor, a failed attempt to knock Jim Schneller off the bailout, and he could barely get enough legal signatures to keep on the ballot without padding his list with forgeries. Sure he has a financial advantage, you would think the R candidate would have a huge financial advantage in an open seat race, not a nominal one. His accomplishments don’t exactly ooze confidence. I can see why he got squeezed out of the gubernatorial race…
I also wonder if you Meehan fans are so proud of your selves, why do you always you use stupid anonymous handles?
