Former Navy head endorses Toomey
A former Secretary of the Navy has opted against endorsing the Navy man in Pennsylvania’s Senate race, endorsing Republican Pat Toomey instead.
John Lehman, who headed the Navy during the Reagan administration, threw his support behind Toomey during a morning event in Harrisburg.
“Pat is a man of principle and integrity,” Lehman said in a statement. “His commitment to the principles of limited government, individual freedom, and personal liberty are unwavering. Pat has tremendous respect for our armed services and a great love for this country. I know he will always put the security of our country first. I look forward to helping him win his race in November.”
Democratic opponent Joe Sestak is a 31-year Navy veteran and former Admiral. His campaign was quick to discount Lehman’s endorsement Thursday, noting that Lehman is an investment banker—and continuing to argue that Toomey is beholden to financial industry interests.
“Admiral Sestak respects Secretary Lehman’s honorable service, both in uniform and as a civilian leader, even though they could hardly disagree more about the Secretary’s views on the Iraq War and his controversial statements regarding the war on terrorism,” Sestak campaign spokesman Jonathon Dworkin said. “But working Pennsylvanians—and particularly veterans—simply won’t be fooled into thinking Congressman Toomey is on our side after he voted against more than $1 billion to fund mental health treatment for Veterans and even opposed a $1,500 bonus for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Question for Sestak campaign:
While in the Navy, did Sestak ever directly interact with Lehman?

Dave-who cares. Toomey’s numbers must be showing him something if he has to trot out a navy guy form thirty years ago who only knows Toomey through investment banking.

Good point. Sestak has the MUCH MORE RELEVANT endorsement from Eric Massa this past March. Massa served with Sestak in congress and were contemporaries in the Navy.
Massa one of only two Democratic congressmen to endorse Sestak (the other being Barney Frank).
At the time, Joe seemed “tickled” to receive the endorsement.
BTW, Dworkin, specifically what views on the Iraq War does Sestak disagree with Lehman on? Sestak voted with Bush (twice) to fund the war without timetables. Sestak also criticized Obama’s plan for Afghanistan because Obama had a timetable. So, if Lehman’s against timetables, then he and Sestak have that view in common.

The lead paragraph of Wikipedia’s “John Lehman” page:
John F. Lehman, Jr. (born September 14, 1942) is an American investment banker and writer who served as Secretary of the Navy in the Reagan administration and in 2003-4 was a member of the 9/11 Commission. He was also involved in the Project for the New American Century, that claimed the absence of a “catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor” in the document “Rebuilding America´s Defenses”, which was released in September 2000. His most famous quote according to NNDB is: “Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind of neat.”
Less than 10 days after 9/11, Lehman (via the PNAC) sent a letter to George Bush saying:
“…even if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. Failure to undertake such an effort will constitute an early and perhaps decisive surrender in the war on international terrorism.”
I hope that the media fully reports just who John Lehman really is, and doesn’t fall for the easy “ex-Navy head” business.

It would be nice to read some of Joe’s comments/insights regarding the Iraq War before he got pushed out and ran for Congress.
Since Joe landed the SS Sestak in Delco, I’ve yet to see a single piece of evidence that Sestak opposed the Iraq War prior to his claims on the campaign trail.
Of course, as a member of Congress, Sestak showed FULL SUPPORT for the Iraq War by voting (twice) to give Bush a blank check (without timetables).

Hey, Davey boy…this guy Lehman is a FRAUD. An investment banker? Reagan’s Navy “head.” Extreme views on terror fighting? Fits in well with Toomey…an investment banker running on Reagan Voodoo trickle down economics with extreme out of touch views on everything from economicsto abortion.
Good to know that when people look him up on Wiki they’ll learnn hes a Wall Street guy, just like Patty-o-
Dave-how’s your vote-o-matic doing?

I’m not claiming that Lehman or Toomey are any good or right on a single issue. Toomey’s entire campaign is running against Obama. Sestak and the specific issues are irrelevant, since the energized GOP base thinks the sun revolves around a 6,000 year old Earth.
Despite how bad Toomey’s economic ideas are, they are espoused by the conservative movement as a fundamental principle.

Dave-Did anybody do nay research to determine whether these so-called tea party activists are people who really never voted before? I find it hard to believe that they are “independents”. I would venture to say that if you could get all these people to identify themselves you will learn they are the registered republican base votes that vote republican every election…you know the 30-35% that shows up and votes in DELCO every election pulling the big R lever…nothing new, no new people.

What point are you trying to make? I’m not saying that the Tea Party people are anything other than highly energized Republican base. However, that base doesn’t get energized over every candidate (ex Lynn Swan).
The Tea Party crowd is doing A LOT to misinform people about the cost of TARP (it’s going to wind up being $50 million, not $700 billion), health care, effects of stimulus, etc. They will have people who normally agree with the Dems, now, believing results that are the opposite of reality, and voting on their mistaken beliefs.
Also, the polls consistently show Toomey winning the REAL registered Independent Likely Voters. Sestak ran too far to the Left in the primary (claiming he’d be Obama’s strongest ally). It is not going to work in the General because Obama is NOT popular with Independents, who are not excited by Sestak (the cure for insomnia in human form).
The problem in Delco is that more Republicans turned out than Democrats, even though this is Sestak’s base, he had the most contested primary, and the GOP had virtually uncontested primaries.
Statewide 30% of Republicans came out May 18th, but only 27% of Dems. In Philadelphia, only 24% of the Dems bothered to vote (and the vast majority voted against Sestak in the first place).
The other “nothing new” is people like you hiding anonymously. Come on out of hiding.

Why on earth would anyone be surprised that a Reagan era military person would support Toomey. Yawn.
The REAL news would be when Diano endorses Sestak!
But then Sestak would lose (all Diano candidates do), so I hope he never goes there. Keep up your DINO ways Diano.

1) I endorsed, supported and worked my ass off for Sestak in 2006 (before I realized what a duplicitous bastard he really was).
So, that’s proof-by-counter-example on your “(all Diano candidates do)” silliness. Other than Sestak, I support the Dem ticket.
(I do feel a bit guilty for helping inflict Sestak upon the Democratic party.)
2) You and the other Sestak drones fail to realize what the rest of us have: Sestak is the DINO
He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the Democratic party. He has been voting along with the party so far, because it has suited his election agenda. He rattles off memorized Dem talking points, but he would be perfectly comfortable running as a conservative Republican with their talking points.
3) Sestak’s campaign has been one giant cluster-f*ck for the PA Dems and the DSCC. Sestak has caused the waste of millions of dollars that are no longer available for winnable Senate races.
4) Wait until Sestak finally loses, and you will be able to visit State committee and various other Dem events and hear first hand accounts of how Sestak has screwed over Dems throughout the state and refused to cooperate. Everybody (well, except me) is keeping a lid on it, since Sestak’s still at the top of the ticket. After November, when people analyze what went wrong, the stories will come out.
My view is that my fellow Dems are better off knowing who and what they are dealing with when it comes to the Sestak Team (spelled with an I).
5) You’ve got to learn not to hike up your skirt, just because Sestak tells you want you want to hear.
6) I’m NOT happy about getting stuck with Senator Toomey for the next 6 years (or longer). However, I dealt with that realization on May 19th. I comforted myself with the knowledge that I had supported the candidate with the better chance of defeating Toomey.
You, Bill and the other drones will not only have to deal with losing, but also with the knowledge that you helped knock off Specter.
You all made the false choice between having Senator Sestak vs Senator Specter. The REAL choice was between having Senator Toomey vs Senator Specter (because Sestak was never going to beat Toomey in the first place).
Sestak shot the party in the foot, and you guys helped him load the ammo.

Dave you supported a republican in the primary and you lend support to a scumbag republican every time you post here, why not just go the joe lieberman way and admit your really a closeted republican. As a Democrat you suck.
