Toomey, Sestak disagree on Ground Zero mosque
Surprise surprise, the idea of building a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero in New York is yet another issue that separates Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate candidates.
Republican Pat Toomey and Democrat Joe Sestak, who have agreed on next-to-nothing in their politically polarized contest, voiced different views this week about the controversial plan, which is supported by President Obama but opposed by a wide swath of Republicans. Comments from aides to the two candidates came on the eve of Sestak’s endorsement from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the project’s most fervent political supporter.
Toomey’s campaign, in a statement first reported by The Morning Call, said the former congressman opposes the project.
“It is provocative in the extreme to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero,” spokeswoman Nachama Soloveichik said. “Islamic leaders should be encouraged to move the mosque elsewhere.”
And Sestak’s campaign, while emphasizing that its position concerns religious freedom in general and not New York’s circumstances in particular, was far more supportive.
“Joe believes there is a Constitutional right to religious freedom and separation of church and state that applies equally to all Americans,” Sestak spokesman Jonathon Dworkin said. “But he is not looking to say what is best for New York—as long as that right is respected—he is focused on Pennsylvania.”

Glad to hear that Joe is on the right side of this issue. However, Joe should make a direct statement of support, himself, rather than have it come from his spokesman.

Joe is standing up for Americans, funny watching all the Constitutional experts on the Right doing backflips to ignore the Constitutional Rights of Muslims to practice their religion where they choose as guaranteed in the 1st Amendment.

This is not a legal issue . Who is saying that the constitution bans mosques? No one. Just because it is legal doesn’t mean it should be done. It is offensive and hurtful to many people to build it there, so what’s wrong with protesting it? You’d think that all these new liberal legal scholars would also understand that the constitution also allows for free speech and political protests. If Walmart were being built there the liberals would be singing a different tune about the constitution, since they’ve been banned from nyc for years.

Steve, the mosque is only offensive if you believe that Muslims are responsible for 9/11. Clearly terrorist where the ones that attacked us, not Muslims. Islam, like Christianity is a faith based on peace, but a few radicals have given it a bad name. What if the rest of the world judged Christians based on the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church?

Demzng, Muslims weren’t responsible for 9/11? Wow, liberals are really rewriting history. Let me guess, the jooooooz did it!

The Daily Show had great take on this.
Is it okay to build churches near playgrounds?
(see decades of priest child molesting scandal for context)

David, did those priests molest kids in the name of their religion? The terrorists on 9/11 murdered people in the name of their religion. Their moon god told them they would get 6,000 little virgin girls if they did it. They yelled “Allu ahkbar!” as they murdered people. But, keep telling yourself that Islam is a religion of peace and evil white republican capitalist Christians are just being racist as usual.

Some people say it is legal but immoral for the mosque to be built. Pardon me, but what is immoral is to judge an entire people by the acts of a few terrorists. Immoral, ignorant and no tribute to the people who died on 9/11.

As a Republican committeeperson, it’s quite disappointing to see my party’s US Senate candidate appeal to the lowest, nativist/tribalist sentiment among the electorate.

Let’s examine the situation in a disinterested fashion, as I tried to do when questioning Bloomberg/Sestak.
The Imam has implicated America as having been an “accessory” to 9/11, but he has been touted as a representative of a more “moderate” Islam during the past decade.
His defenders have cried “prejudice” and his opponents have cried “insensitivity.”
Meanwhile, this site is unlike the other site of a Mosque in lower-Manhattan, for the landing gear from Atta’s plane crashed through the roof of the Burlington Coat Factory Building that is to become the Mosque; thus, it is truly, physically part of what is properly viewed as meriting enshrinement.
And, meanwhile, those awaiting approval to rebuild the Greek Orthodox Church remain in hyperspace.
Finally, no one knows how the $100 million project is to be funded.
THEREFORE, rushing to approval appears premature, while such fundamental questions pend. These unclear issues penetrate to the heart of whether there are indeed peaceful intentions or whether this is to be a conquest-symbol as has occurred elsewhere throughout the world.
I’m also a GOP-committeeman, and I am proud that Toomey has adopted a skeptical posture. The responsibility to show ecumenicalism (such as adding multi-religious facilities) rests with the sponsors of this project.
Let’s hear the Imam reply to the press!

I wholeheartedly support taking a disinterested approach here. So let’s base our judgment on facts and facts alone, let’s stop the fear mongering and let’s judge Islam the way we would want our own religion to be judged. Let’s remember that Muslims too died on 9/11, let’s remember that Muslim Americans are not second class citizens, and most importantly, let’s apply our law dispassionately and fairly.

Dr. Sklaroff,
I did happen to read in the Inky today that during the Sestak/Bloomberg press conference you started asking bizarre questions about the mosque issue rather than anything which has bearing on the state of things in Pennsylvania today.
I also noticed that Mr. Wendell Whitlock, who is chairman of the investment group that offered their site for the press event shot down your accusations of Bloomberg and Sestak being in bed with “anti-American” Muslims. He said to you: “I would suggest you go from here directly to the library, get a copy of the Bill of Rights, and you’ll realize that everybody has a right to say what they want to say.”
He couldn’t be more right.
Guys like you are putting the interests of Israel ahead of those of the United States. If there’s anything “anti-American” at foot, it is the Israel-First approach that puts American interests below those of a foreign state.
Let’s get back to the issues. Who is better on the economy? Sestak supported the stimulus bill that has been proven to work and preserved/created a million jobs. Toomey would have voted no.
Who is better on the Middle East? Sestak calls for pragmatism, balance, and reason in our dealings with this delicate part of the world. Toomey wants to use military force against Iran.
Who is better for Pennsylvania? Toomey says that he won’t accept or apply for one penny in earmark money. Thus, money that comes from PA taxpayers will go to California, New York, or other states because our US Senator doesn’t want to bring home our own dollars for use in the Keystone State. Sestak wants to reform the earmark process and doesn’t deny the reality in which a Senator must operate.
Sestak is better on the Middle East, the economy, and a host of other issues. Toomey is a Herbert Hoover Republican living in pre-stock market crash 1929. We can’t afford to take a step back and make him a Senator from our state.

Let’s see the Pentagon was attacked on 9/11 too and there IS a mosque located inside of it, yet you don’t hear a peep out of the GOP about this, bunch of hypocrites…
No one talks about how Toomey wanted to drill in Lake Erie either…

Re: Let’s clarify the facts
First, multiple questions regarding the Mosque-Issue had been asked before I had been given the opportunity to focus on the specifics of the Imam’s refusal to denounce terrorism.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DO YOU FEEL HE SHOULD RENOUNCE HAMAS/HESBOLLAH’S TERRORISM?
Second, I asked about the Imam’s having accused America as having been an “accessory” to 9-11, and whether this posture essentially poisons the current allegedly “ecumenical” effort.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DO YOU FEEL AMERICA WAS AN ACCESSORY TO 9-11?
Third, it was Bloomberg who evaded my question by advising a review of the Bill of Rights (which I happen to carry routinely in my back pocket).
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DO YOU FEEL THAT–LEGALISMS ASIDE–QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE FUNDING OF THIS EFFORT (FROM SAUDI ARABIA AND/OR IRAN, SUPPORTING WAHHABBISM AND OTHER SUCH ISLAMIST BELIEVS) ARE GERMANE?
Fourth, it is difficult to see where Israeli/American interests diverge regarding the need to fight international terrorism.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DO YOU PERCEIVE THE PRIORITY OF DEFEATING THOSE WHO WOULD CREATE A WORLDWIDE CALIPHATE…AND BEHEAD ALL NON-MUSLIMS?
Fifth, regarding jobs/jobs/jobs, it is fascinating to note the glib discussion of saved-jobs, noting this past week’s loss of another half-million despite the “Stimulus,” even as the deficit skyrockets.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DID NOT THE “STIMULUS” AND THE REST OF THE OBAMANOMICS SPENDING-EXTRAVAGANZA FAILED MISERABLY?
Sixth, regarding Iran, it seems “sanctions” have failed to forestall the inexorable march towards a nuked-up Iran.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? IS NOT IRAN CONFRONTING “THE BIG SATAN” [AMERICA] WITH AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT?
Seventh, regarding Earmarks, federal deficit spending is out-of-control, partially due to the favoritism inherent in the awarding of no-bid contracts to insiders.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? BECAUSE “TRANSPARENCY” WOULDN’T REASONABLY STOP THIS PRACTICE, SHOULDN’T IT BE BANNED ENTIRELY?
