New Corbett ad touts no-tax pledge
A new TV ad from Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett talks up the attorney general’s pledge not to raise taxes—and waves off the bipartisan skepticism that he can keep the pledge.
The ad, unveiled by Corbett’s campaign in an e-mail to supporters Tuesday morning, is his first new TV spot since he cruised to his party’s nomination in the May primary. The size of the first ad buy was not immediately clear, but Corbett started the general election cycle with a substantial financial advantage over Democratic nominee Dan Onorato, who had to fight his way through a four-way primary.
The Republican leader in the state Senate is among those who have questioned how Corbett can handle Pennsylvania’s troublesome budget situation without raising taxes, and Onorato has has needled Corbett on the specifics of the pledge.
“The politicians were just as skeptical when I promised to fight corruption in Pennsylvania, and boy, were they wrong,” Corbett says in the ad. “So if any of them truly believe we can’t stop Harrisburg’s reckless spending and high taxes, just watch me.”

This is nuts. By 2013, PA is going to have a $6.5 billion budget deficit. There’s absolutely no way to close that entirely with spending cuts, nor should anyone want to. There’s no reason we can’t levy a natural gas tax just like every other state allowing natural gas drilling. There’s no reason we can’t close tax loopholes for national chains like Wal-Mart who don’t pay any taxes in the state. There’s no reason we should abide a Swiss Cheese tax code with scores of bizarre exemptions for politically-connected industries. Simply the tax code, and make sure everybody who should be paying taxes is paying taxes, and you can probably even reduce the corporate tax rate. I fully expected the Republican candidate to be talking this kind of nonsense, but it’s a real shame that Dan Onorato is too scared to give voters some straight talk about the need for tax increases that both he and Corbett will undoubtedly authorize over the next several years.

Who is behind this deficit?Sped Rendell, this guy should be commited to a mental hospital! The casino industry brings in about $6 million dollars a week in takes. He tried to lease out our interstate, now he wants to raise fee’s on tags and inspections,he wanted to take pictures of people’s license plates to see if they had insurance and if not send them a fine. How much does Pa.have to put up with before it comes to the conclusion that Rendell is mentally unfit to run this state?Back door casino deals ,large campaign contributions from casino owners. It’s time for some one with a set of nuts to stand up and run this state. In my opinion Corbett may be this guy,and we can send Sped back to his mental ward with his box of depends.

Jon Geeting is correct on his substantive points, but I have to say that this is quite a good ad.

Yes, such a good ad that there was an article in the Philadelphia Daily News today talking about how Corbett contradicted himself – TWICE – in the ad.
Nice waste of money, Tom.
