Lentz: Meehan feels ‘threatened’ by Schneller

Democrat Bryan Lentz on Tuesday called his Republican opponent’s ballot challenge against a third-party candidate “dishonest,” saying that independent Jim Schneller is a legitimate candidate who has left Republican Pat Meehan feeling “threatened.”

The comments from Lentz were some of his first substantive remarks about Schneller and Meehan since news broke that Democratic allies of Lentz helped the conservative get on the ballot. Lentz has refused to comment on his campaign’s involvement, and Meehan’s campaign brought a ballot challenge against Schneller on Monday.

On Tuesday, Lentz sought to keep the focus on Meehan having to do battle with a fellow conservative.

“Pat Meehan’s campaign is obviously threatened by the presence of a true conservative in the race,” Lentz said in a statement. “But that debate is irrelevant to my campaign. While we’re focused on job creation and economic development in the 7th District, Pat Meehan and Jim Schneller can fight to decide who will gain the tea party’s support in November.”

Lentz noted that Schneller has been campaigning since last fall, has participated in forum-style debate with Meehan and other candidates—and reminded voters yet again that Meehan’s own nominating petition drive is still under investigation by the state attorney general’s office. Lentz also sought to frame the issue as one in which Meehan has to prove his conservative credentials, noting that Meehan recently opposed raising the Social Security retirement age, a position not shared by many in the GOP leadership, including House Minority Leader John Boehner.

In a statement, Meehan campaign manager Bryan Kendro said it was Lentz being dishonest by refusing to acknowledge his campaign’s role in helping Schneller get on the ballot.

“The hypocrisy of Bryan Lentz is staggering considering it was his liberal army of operatives who are responsible for a majority of the signatures collected for the candidacy of someone Lentz himself describes as a ‘true conservative,’” Kendro said. “The facts are clear and indisputable, Lentz has engaged in unethical, low ball dirty politics, and has yet to respond to public calls asking for him to come clean and explain his mischievous and dishonest actions.”

Lentz was also asked about Schneller during a morning appearance on Fox29. Pressed, he again declined to talk about any role played by his campaign.

“There’s nothing for me to admit,” Lentz said. “The people that filed [the petitions], as I said, their names are public record.”

These three candidates need to go away forever. They’ve succeeded in turning this into a mockery. Do they truly think people are that dumb? I guess they do by staying in the race. Enough already. Abolish the district, void the entire proceeding and be done with it once and for all. That would be better than the alternative of actually having an election among these three. Complete disingenuous behavior that only serves themselves, not their constituents. We need leaders and visionaries, something that simply does not exist in Pa. politics today. Time for a constitutional convention FOR THE PEOPLE to take back government in the worst way.

I guess Kendro isn’t concerned with Meehan’s “unethical, low ball dirty politics, and has yet to respond to public calls asking for him to come clean and explain his mischievous and dishonest actions”
regarding all those forged petitions by his GOP supporters who Meehan has embraced for years.

Also, it would be nice if Lentz actually had a “liberal army of operatives”. I don’t think a dozen people getting petition signatures constitutes an army.

Closer to an “army” is is the thousands of GOP appointees in the Delco courthouse who are expected to help campaigns as an unspoken (but well understood) condition of their employment.

Lentz supporters help get this unimpressive candidate on the ballot and Meehan supporters try to have him removed. Schneller isn’t a threat to anyone; he’s a joke given too much attention by political junkies.

David is right! Also, since when does a citizen give up the right to circulate or sign petitions BECAUSE she is politically active??

To prior comments – With thousands of GOP appointees in the Delco courthouse it must get very crowded. I bet it’s a real big courthouse. This also explains why government never gets much done around here – clearly they’re too busy with all that appointing. Just another reason why I’m with BB on this one – abolish the 7th, and while we’re at it I say we abolish Delaware County. BB and I are going to start up the Abolition Coalition. Join unless you want to get abolished too.
Anyway, Dan, I do think you could give Lentz a little more credit for this interview – he didn’t really do much in the way of acrobatics with the truth and he didn’t just clam up when petitions were mentioned. He avoided dropping a sound bite into Meehan’s lap, but he clearly acknowledged what seem to be the facts of the case. The denials he issued were in response to Meehan’s claims or implications that gloss some important distinctions for both moral and legal perspectives. The distinctions Lentz stresses are that (1.) no one employed by the campaign circulated for Schneller and (2.) Schneller’s is not a “sham candidacy” put together by Democrats in a smoke-filled room. You can’t expect bubbling volubility when his opponents are looking for ammunition: a phrase that sounds like an admission of anything (even, say, knowledge that Democrats gathered petitions for Schneller) will be spun in the Meehan release and likely the headlines as a dramatic confession to all charges. I’d give the guy a break for telling the truth.

Lentz looks guilty as sin in that interview. No one on my camapign, um, no one I pay, I mean no one did anything illegal. What complete slime ball. Be a man, own up to it.

Its pretty clear that Lentz directed this effort, which wasa huge misstep and really shattered his carefuly contructed facade of being a “good guy.” Most people I mention the good guy image to tell me he’s really a prick. Lentz is letting people see who he really is with this half-baked scheme and its not pretty.

I don’t see what is low ball or unethical about getting a candidate on the ballet that will take away from your opponent. It wasn’t illegal. Its one thing to not like Bryan Lentz because of political affiliation but come lets be honest with ourselves Republicans have been doing this type of things since time immemorial. As to his not coming out and admitting his supporters being involved, as it was stated in previous post he doesn’t want to create a sound bite for Meehan. Which is fine because the less informed will not know the whole story.
All this back and forth about how wrong Lentz is and how he is a bad guy for doing this is stupid and those engaged in criticizing him need to take a good look in the mirror and ask themselves if my guy was trying to win a race by any and all LEGAL means would I be upset.
Everyone of us that comes to this site know the game of politics. So lets stop with this faux indignation its petty and it makes you blatant R’s and disillusioned rest seem petty and spiteful.

    Lex-
Check out the courthouse sometime and get a list of their employees. Compare it to the voter registration files. Over 90% republican and some key departments (with over a dozen or two employees) don’t even have a single Democrat.
