State GOP looks to strike third-party candidates

Republicans allied with the state GOP filed a slate of ballot challenges against third-party candidates for statewide office Monday, as the party looked to avoid a splinter of conservative votes in the fall.

Challenges from the same group of plaintiffs were filed against Libertarian candidates for senate, governor and lieutenant governor. A separate group of plaintiffs challenged John Krupa, the self-identified Tea Party candidate for governor.

A state party spokesman couldn’t immediately be reached for comment late Monday afternoon. But plaintiffs in the challenges confirmed they were filed on behalf of the state party. The Libertarian candidates being challenged are Senate hopeful Douglas Jamison, gubernatorial nominee Marakay Rogers and lieutenant governor candidate Kat Valleley.

State GOP spokesman Michael Barley told PoliticsPA that party officials helped the plaintiffs with research.

“We can’t tell anybody to do anything, especially when it comes to a legal challenge,” Barley said. “But were we helpful? Absolutely, and we’ll continue to be helpful.”

The Tea Party and grassrrots are not happy that Krupa is trying to steal their moniker. The fact that the unions helped him get signatures doesn’t help either.

Grassrrots may be a good term. This is about a blatant move to deny voters choices on their ballot. If the Republican State Party hold voters in such contempt that they deliberately thwart the electoral process, at least they should be honest about it and not hide behind laws that are in direct opposition to the constitutional mandate of free and equal elections.

Krupa is listed on a Tea Party website and because no one owns the brand, he’s just as legit as anyone else.

So, now the Tea Partiers have a choice: admit they they are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party( http://www.pennsylvaniateaparty.com/), or show they are pissed off because the Republicans are trying to deny them their constitutional right to run for office (http://cpartyalleghenycounty.blogspot.com/2010/04/pennsylvania-constitution-party-state.html).

It’s put up or shut up time for the TP.

As to the “TP” being unhappy with Krupa: grow up. This is what happens with Dems and Repubs all the time when primaries happen. Sometimes you guy wins, sometimes not.

To those claiming Krupa is a union “plant,” I ask, doesn’t that really potentially hurt the Democrats more than the Republicans? It makes no sense for the Dems to push a Labor guy as a 3rd party candidate.

Also, look to see who is working on doing the challenges and see how many hours from the State’s Attorney General office get clocked in this effort. I’m sure Corbett, who never misses an opportunity to abuse his office, will dispatch a legion of state paid goons to get to the bottom of this. His laim efforts will make Twitter-gate look like a High School effort.

Mik following the law is part of the electoral process, if you can’t get the reqrisite number ofsignatures on your petitions you don’t get on the ballot, unless your Pat Meehan.

Anonymous, you are ignorant of what the Libertarian Party represents. There is nothing “leftist” about it. You can learn about it at http://www.lp.org.platform Aren’t you a little bit embarrassed to throw cowardly insults at those trying to improve our government while you hide behind online anonymity?

The Libertarian Party is neither left or right. While there are those with conservative and liberal leanings, they no more represent the entire community than a TV spokesperson represents their audience. Whether left or right, a large government holds the power to force it’s agenda upon you. Libertarians fight for individual liberty, which is sometimes referred to as freedom. The freedom to choose to live your life the way you see fit as long as you do not harm others.

Do you have the right to force the way you live upon others? Absolutely not! Do you have the right to take someone’s property because it is “the right thing to do”? Nope.

So I ask you a simple question: Are you an advocate of liberty?

If so, feel free to check out the Libertarian Party website here: http://www.lp.org/

It is funny that this proxy war is coming a surprise to anyone. The majority of the ‘tea party” folks who are just ordinary pissed off people who have a whole range of anti-establishment gripes that the republicans are trying to co-opt in order to re-brand their bruised national image. A country club old white guy party trying to be anti-establishment is silly.( momma grizzly and her cable kooks aside)
The more the republicans try and convert the tea party and their ” flag” issues the more they will flee any association with any group including the republicans.

Remember folks that the Democrats and Republicans actually do not own anyone’s vote!!!! Independents and third parties already have an unfairly arduous hill to climb in getting on the ballot and this move supported by the state GOP to challenge third party candidates continues to show us how the major parties corrupt and keep closed our so-called democratic election process.

There is no faux outrage, simply disappointment that the two entrenched political machines cannot be honest about their intent. They want to limit the competition for their nominee and with it the choice of the voters. We have soldiers dying overseas to bring choices on the ballot to people in foreign lands, but the political machines seek to restrict those choices in Pennsylvania.

The modicum of support demonstrated by the submittal of the signatures was met by all of the candidates who successfully filed submittals. Nominees of the D and R parties, even though they are selected in a publicly funded process, do not have to file any signatures to be on the November ballot. Not only did all of the Libertarian Party nominees show the modicum of support through the filing of the signatures, but also through the many more thousands of voters who are registered with the Libertarian Party.

The State GOP is facilitating this affront to the citizens of Pennsylvania. If the political machines were concerned for the voters, they should be condemning this action and proceeding to the arena of ideas where they can make the case for their public policy positions.

It would be more honest of these folks to simply outlaw third parties.

The cost of ballot access through petition requirements, 10 times the requirement R/D candidates need, isn’t enough of a roadblock.

Since 2004, this gang has used the legal challenge to create a 2nd, immense financial hurdle that drags into campaign season.

The Libertarian Party has 36,000 registered members in Pennsylvania.

As a teen Libertarian in public office in Florida (and native Pittsburgher) where I work peacefully with people from both major parties, these actions from party extremists are sad. The law is particularly disgusting in that the small party has to pay the re-verification fees win or lose. In Florida third parties are encouraged and challenges are rare as the SOE’s double verify in the first place.

These people should wake up. Libertarians and other 3rd parties are not going away. I have written the Governor asking he look at this problem.

These challenges are happening everywhere. We are experiencing it in Illinois. People want a true “change”, and neither the Republicans or Democrats want competition. The Libertarian candidates in Illinois got over 48,000 signatures to be on the ballot, when only 25,000 were required. However, a “third-party” candidate can be challenged if they do not get 50,000 signatures. Guess what? We got challenged. However, it looks like they will not be able to “block” our ballot access. If this silly legal battle continues the way it is going, we should “officially” be recognized by the end of August.

John Krupa did not hijack the tea party lable. He was asked by tea party members to run. He was already petitioning to get on the ballot with the Constitution Party,so why not be happy we have more than two choices this year. All these challenges would all go away if the Dems and Repubs allowed fair and equal access to the ballot. It would also save the taxpayers a ton of money. Lets require the same amount of signatures for everyone. What do you say democrats and republicans????

Well since the GOP shut us down I guess the only thing to do is go vote democrat until the GOP stops picking on us little guys. They obviously don’t want to work with us so we should side with their enemy. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
