GOP hopefuls sign anti-climate tax pledge

Every Republican challenger in Pennsylvania’s competitive U.S. House race has now signed a pledge to oppose any climate legislation that raises taxes.

Pat Meehan, the Republican candidate in the 7th Congressional District, and Mike Fitzpatrick, the challenger in the 8th District, were the latest to sign the pledge from Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group founded by billionaire David Koch. The pledge commits candidates to oppose any climate change measure that “includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” Phil Kerpen, the group’s vice president for policy, said in a statement. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

The pledge has also been signed by Mike Kelly in the 3rd District; Keith Rothfus in the 4th District; Tom Marino in the 10th District; Lou Barletta in the 11th District; Tim Burns in the 12th District; and Dave Argall in the 17th District.

    Hey Dan H.,

Did you know that for FitzFlop this is a 180 degree turn from the way he actually voted while he was in Congress?

FitzFlop was the only Republican co-sponsor of the Safe Climate Act of 2006 – Waxman’s original Cap and Trade legislation which is in many ways worse than what Dems are supporting now (that is – if you think Cap and Trade is undesirable).

But subsequent to getting voted out of office, FitzFlop has changed his opinion because like any career politician, he will say anything to get re-elected … no wait, I mean, because times are different and he has re-thought and changed his position on this and about a dozen other issues.

“(that is – if you think Cap and Trade is undesirable)”

Hell yeah its undesirable! It’s just another heaping spoonful of manure that the government wants to feed us at a time when we’re already full of the previous manure (aka. Stimulus, Obamacare, Fiscal Reform, and the new 24 Billion ot the states). Cap and Trade is just another government led scam to get our money.

It’s unfortunate that the Republican Party’s full slate of House candidates opposes a piece of legislation that would cut $24 billion from the federal deficit between now and 2019 while creating 2 million new jobs, including 78,000 across Pennsylvania, while saving Keystone State households nearly $1,100 a year in annual energy costs.

Moreover, this position espoused by this letter isn’t just anti-climate; it’s a deliberate attempt to keep Pennsylvania and the U.S. shackled to an unsustainable energy policy that spends more than $1 billion a day on foreign while other countries pass us in the race to lead the clean energy economy of the 21st century.

After the hottest decade on record, the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history and countries like China and India making major clean energy investments while we lose our competitive edge, supporting climate and clean energy legislation isn’t just the Democratic thing to do, it’s the right thing to do for Pennsylvania’s working families. That’s why Reps. Brady, Fattah, Sestak, Murphy, Kanjorski, Schwartz and Doyle voted for it.

Pure insanity and pandering at its worst to the uneducated and misinformed. In other words, these Republican candidates are saying that they will vote against saving the planet and future generations without even knowing the price tag or the future cost savings. If these clowns are elected, we may be about to enter a new age of barbarianism where science is ignored as being worthless.

Cap and trade has absolutely NOTHING to do with making things better. Does it force these companies to not consume the energy? No, they need to use it to produce their products so they are going to use it. Then the price of the products go up and the consumer actually pays this additional tax. Carbon credits are a sham created by one of the biggest BS artists next to PT Barnum, Al Gore. You know, the same guy who can’t practice what he preaches. I repeat, cap and trade has absolutely NOTHING to do with making things better. Prove me wrong.

What is wrong with changing your mind, when the science is discredited?

That’s like pledging not to raise taxes for World War Three. Both global warming and WW III could be coming. I have grandkids so am concerned about climate change.

But it doesn’t exist! Tell me, where is the proof?
The guy’s at MIT say it doesn’t exist. Prove it to me! The world has been around for 1,000,000 if not
billions of years. Why would 100 years of cars cause climate change? Every year we find more oil.
How many dinosaurs had to die? The one thing that the Gulf spill proved, nature will clean up our mess. The science is made up, don’t you think?

    @Questioning

If you truly are interested in the proof, do a little research. The vast majority of scientists agree that there is a man made climate change problem. Primarily only scientists who are employed by the energy industry or politically motivated and a few quacks disagree.

    For Questioning

Where have you been the last ten years when scientists all around the globe are fairly unanimous that the planet is heating up due to the burning of fossil fuel.

And do you really believe the massive oil spill in the gulf is “cleaned up”? If you do I have a really great bridge in Brooklyn I’d like for you to check out.

Time to get your head out of the sand, before you strike oil and cause another oil spill.
