Toomey hits the airwaves with 5 new ads

Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey made an early play for TV time Wednesday, when his campaign unveiled five new ads that decried government spending, one-party rule and his Democratic opponent’s stances on energy and spending policy.

The size of the ad buy remained unclear. But the Toomey campaign said the five new ads, along with an ad that aired shortly after the May primary, would run statewide and for an “indefinite” period of time. With Joe Sestak having emptied his campaign coffers for a competitive Democratic primary and Toomey raising money at an impressive clip, the ads appeared to be an attempt to seize control of the political narrative early in the game. The ads came as Sestak and Toomey have been crisscrossing the state and engaging in an increasingly contentious public debate on the issues.

“I respect Congressman Sestak for sincerely believing in his liberal policies,” Toomey said in a statement. “But I believe his support for bailouts, government-run health care, massive deficits, huge tax increases, and a cap-and-trade energy tax will cost Pennsylvania tens of thousands of jobs.”

Democrats were quick to respond.

“If Former Wall Street derivatives trader Pat Toomey thinks Pennsylvanians aren’t going to notice his extreme record, he has another thing coming,” said Deirdre Murphy, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “As a congressman, Pat Toomey rubberstamped the big spending, deficit-hiking policies of the Bush economy and supported efforts to privatize Social Security. Toomey’s record is even more extreme than defeated former Senator Rick Santorum and Pennsylvanians are not going to let Toomey leave the middle class high and dry anymore.”

None of these ads matter, PA voters are smart enough to realize that toomey is only santorrum on steroids, nothing more than a tea bagger club for growth blowhard

Sestak will win by 10+ points. Democrats have a 4 zillion voter registration edge, didn’t anyone know that? Pennsylvania is the new NJ, so everyone better get out their wallets come tax day and get used to it. This election is in the bag for Sestak. I couldn’t be more confident.

    Pat Toomey will win handily.

Sestak has done nothing but vote party line. Nothing original. Pat presents the facts and has cleaned Sestak’s clock in any debate because all Joe can do is recite the Democrat platitudes and party lines. He comes off as a wimpy Michael Dukakis, if you can imagine anything so bad.

I can see November from my HOUSE!!!!!!!

15-second ads in Central PA, huh? I guess he’s really trying to get bang for his buck … which makes sense, I suppose.

Saw one just now on WGAL 8 (Central PA/Harrisburg) led first on commercial from news. Actually there were 2 during the same break as the second came on as I was typing this. Both were negative. Glad Patty is playing in the dirt already.

    NEPAdem-
Of course Toomey is to the Right of Santorum, but he also is more low key in his presentation, so he sounds moderate. He’s smart enough NOT to refer to man-on-dog and other stupid stuff Rick says.
The other factor is the money and the advertising it buys. Toomey can afford ads to define himself and Sestak from now until election day.
Finally, in an anti-incumbent year, Sestak is the incumbent (even though he isn’t holding the Senate seat). Sestak’s an election year incumbent because he’s an elected official in the party that controls Congress and the White House. So, if this election is a referendum on the policies of the Dems and Obama, then Sestak will either pay-the-price or reap-the-reward.

    Tom-
We had that same voter registration advantage and lost the statewide judicial races.

Everyone: please listen to Diano. He is so smart. I remember just a couple of months ago all his predictions for the Sestak/Specter primary. Oh, he was so sure then. Just as he is now. And wasn’t he 100% correct? Specter did win, right? Yup, Diano is so smart. I’d hire him to analyze my campaign ’cause he always gets it right. You betcha!

    rplinpa-
A lot people were predicting a Specter win and the final result was on the outside edge of the polling. Unfortunately, the voters outside of SEPA screwed up and picked Sestak (because they rejected Specter out of spite).

The only “prediction” I’m making here is that Toomey’s going to be harder to beat than the registration advantage would suggest. The economy hasn’t improved as much as Dems need to overcome GOP fear-mongering.

However, if Sestak or Toomey wins the seat, the voters still lose.

Dems should focus their efforts on keeping the state house, to control redistricting. That’s far more important than throwing good money after bad on Sestak.

This coming from a guy who spent his time in Congress voting for tax cuts and big war spending that produced budget deficits and an outrageous national debt of over $13 trillion.
