LEFTOVERS: Sestak on Club for Growth, Toomey on earmarks, Lentz’s haul

Summer is the season of campaign Web videos, and it continued Tuesday with a broadside from Democrat Joe Sestak’s Senate campaign, which used its latest video to go after the Club for Growth, the limited government group formerly headed by Republican opponent Pat Toomey.

The video juxtaposes Toomey talking about his tenure at the club with Republicans bashing it. The club has long been a thorn in the side of moderate Republicans, who often find themselves subject to primary purges funded in part by the organization. “The Club for Growth’s rigid advocacy for policies that benefit only the wealthiest few at the expense of working families is what led us into this recession,” Sestak campaign spokesman Jonathon Dworkin said in a statement. “Congressman Toomey may believe in and push for these policies, but as even his fellow Republicans point out, his approach is way out of touch.”

Check out the video at bottom.

Meanwhile, Toomey’s campaign kept up its attack on Sestak over those nefarious items known as earmarks. That’s been Toomey’s issue of the week, ever since The Inquirer called out Sestak for not exactly living up to his own rhetoric on the subject. So Toomey’s campaign sent out its own release on the subject, arguing that Sestak’s take on his own ethics policy is, effectively, “never mind.”

“If Congressman Sestak wants Pennsylvanians to trust him, he should return the $119,650 he took from earmark recipients in violation of his own promise,” Toomey campaign spokeswoman Nachama Soloveichik said in a statement. “Pennsylvanians deserve better than broken promises and empty gestures from another Washington politician.”

And a day after Democrat Bryan Lentz got to bask in the fundraising glow of Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, multiple news reports were floating estimates of the cash taken in from the joint event for Lentz’s 7th District congressional campaign and the party’s House campaign committee. Word is that the event netted close to a quarter-million bucks, with Lentz expected to see about half that. The big, one-day haul would cut Lentz’s fundraising disadvantage against Republican Pat Meehan by more than a third.

First I must solicit your confidence in this transaction. This is by virtue of its nature as being utterly confidential and top secret. We are top candidates for US House of Representatives interested in importation of cash into our campaigns with funds which are presently trapped in by you. In order to commence this business we solicit your assistance to enable us RECIEVE the said trapped funds.

The source of this fund is as follows : During this campaign many liberals and special interest groups look to donate to our campaigns.

I have therefore, been delegated as a matter of trust by my colleagues to ask a safe liberal incumbent INTO whose ACCOUNT the sum of US$250,000 WILL BE PAID BY LOBBYIST PACs. Hence we are writing you this letter. We have agreed to share the money thus:

    45% for us (the candidates)

45% for the LIBERAL PARTNER (you)

10% to be used in settling taxation and all local and foreign expenses.

It is from this 90% that we wish to commence the importation business.

Please note that this transaction is 100% safe and we hope THAT THE FUNDS CAN ARRIVE YOUR ACCOUNT in latest ten (10) banking days from the date of reciept of the following information by TEL/FAX: 234-1-7747907: A SUITABLE NAME AND BANK ACCOUNT INTO WHICH THE FUNDS CAN BE PAID. I was thinking it’s unfortunate that a legitimate article is just ‘refuted’ with nonsense. How about discussing something that’s reality based?

What was Lentz thinking with this PR blunder? He must have been happy to see the Tea Party pick up more local TV coverage than he did.

The Lentz camp reaks of desperation. Pa2010 should take this off of their congressional power rankings list, didn’t they hear it’s uncontested?

    Byron,

As a non-lawyer with excellent legal knowledge, I repudiate any notion of commingling that may or may not have been present in the said document. The very nature of the agreements set forth raise questions of the context in which the said client entered into the agreement and as a non-lawyer I would cite promissory estoppel as the equitable resolution to the disagreement set forth by one C. Guinee.

Please feel free to contact my office with further questions.

    Excitedly,

    Vinny

Well Vinny, your sound legal knowledge is quite impressive. You are much too smart to be working in Lentz’s office, come on down to the White House, we could use some advising these days.

    Vinnie,

Your incoherent and seemingly-intoxicated ramblings are what forced you to start “spending more time with your family” or “exploring opportunities in the private sector” or whatever euphemism that we used when I threw you under the bus for the greater good of, well, me. I’ve told you once and I’ll tell you again, unless your personal grooming standards improve dramatically, you are no longer the campaign manager of Byron for Congress.

    Truly,

    Byron

Easy there Byron. My t-shirts, shorts and hobo beard are just a way to make our granola Swarthmore interns feel at home. As far as my legal advice is concerned, I continue to maintain that our fiduciary relationship warrants further examination of the facts presented herein. I wish to express my deepest sense of concern and condemnation over the document that was presented to our Madam Speaker. If you wish to discuss our current state of incompatibility or the vexatious litigation upon which you continue to pursue I can be found in one D. Diano’s mothers basement eating HotPockets, chocolate chip Dunk-a-roos and blogging about Admiral Sestak.

    Your compatriot,

    Vinny

    Grammar Nazi,

Byron is my grandson and he is spelling his name correctly. I suggest you reference the extensive literature that is available on my grandson before you log onto the interweb and act like some spelling Nazi. If you want to make corrections to someone’s interweb writing you should turn to wiki.

    Your friend,

    Byron T. Lentz Sr.
