Unnecessary, unfortunate remarks

by Marcel Groen

I would like to congratulate my counterpart, Bob Kerns, on being unanimously reelected as chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Committee. It has been a long time since there has been a unanimous opinion about anything among county Republicans. Kerns should be proud.

What Kerns should be less proud of are the comments he made upon being reelected. The Times Herald quoted him as telling his party faithful to work hard, and saying: “We need you in this fight. We’re fighting those Democrats—those infidels—all the time, and we need your help.”

Infidels? Kerns fancies himself a student of history, so he should certainly understand the connotations of such a charged term. In dictionary terms, it means “one who doubts or rejects central tenets of a religion, or one who has no religious beliefs.” In practical terminology, it is a term that has been used to justify the killing of millions of innocents under the guise of religious purity. Politics may be Kerns’ religion, but in today’s political atmosphere in America, I think we need a little less “zealotry” and little more understanding and bipartisanship. I do not think it is productive to dehumanize our political opponents, or use terminology that conjures up the need for murder.

I will fight hard to convince people that our positions on issues are better, but I respect my opponents, their beliefs and their patriotism. Kerns does everyone a disservice by using a fanatical religious expression to describe his political opponents.

Politics is not a crusade. At its best, it is a debate between competing visions and beliefs, and in our country that means a debate between our two main political parties. I may disagree with my opponents and their views, but I respect them and realize that the country we all love is better off for that legitimate and spirited debate.

The so-called infidels that Kerns referred to in his speech are his neighbors. Like his righteous Republicans, those infidels coach Little League, volunteer in the community, attend the same churches, synagogues and mosques that Republicans attend and they are defending our country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democrats are not infidels, Mr. Kerns. They are working men and women, patriotic Americans, and people who simply have a different view than you do of the role of government in our society.

We have all seen and heard the excessively personal and destructive language used by all sides in the political discourse across this country in recent years. People and ideas are routinely branded with historical and evil epithets. Our Congress and legislatures have been frozen into inaction and gridlock by the same type of rigid ideology and lack of civility.

When this type of behavior occurs we are all demonstrating an “infidelity” to our Constitution and the vision and dream that our Founding Fathers had for our political discourse and our society as a whole. I urge Bob Kerns to raise the tenor of the debate. Our ideas are fair game, as are his, but I will not allow him to denigrate and dehumanize his fellow Americans, and in particular, Montgomery County Democrats, without challenging his brand of political speech.

The writer is chairman of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee.

I think “infidels” is Republican for “tax-hikers, big-spenders, and people who have generally made the country feel defensive and lack confidence.”

Add to that “and apologize to the rest of the world for being Americans, as we are all bad, bad people”. Oh, and happy Flag Day to those who are actually glad to be American.

Would two-faced liars and thieves make you feel better?

So, according to Michael Livingston and the rest, Repubs can simply use any word they choose and attach their own meaning to it.

But even more incredible, even the new meaning is packed with lies. For example: “tax hikers”:

The reality is that in their first year in office, Obama and the Democratic Congress LOWERED middle class taxes, passing 25 middle-class tax cuts during 2009 alone. It was the biggest tax cut in US HISTORY. [Source: Washington Monthly: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_02/016863.php But of course, to Republicans, Democrats are still “tax hikers.”

Again, if you’re a Republican, you’re allowed to just make stuff up. It’s in the rules, I think.

As for making the country “feel defensive and lack confidence”? Speaking just for myself, here in Pennsylvania, I sure don’t lack confidence.

    I can’t wait for November.

    Thanks, Bruce.

I’d add that it was Republicans that spent money like it was going out of style for the last 30 years. They spent the Social Security trust fund, too, just for good measure. Of course, now they can point and say Social Security is broke, so we have to get rid of it.

Two wars that were run on the national credit card…tax cuts for the rich and famous…the PA senate passing costs down the line to municipalities and school districts forcing them to raise property taxes and making villains of our neighbors who serve on those boards. All this while they preach that government of the people, by the people, and for the people is actually the enemy of the people. Just who is the “Infidel” here?

Wake up, America: You can’t trust Republicans with your money. Or your government.

    Oops! Too much punctuation:

Wake up, America: You can’t trust Republicans with your money or your government.

Or maybe we could just edit down to:

    You can’t trust Republicans.

    Works for me.

I hardly think the Republican party has a leg to stand on anymore in accusing Democrats of being the party of ‘big spending’ after the 8 years of fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush administration, abetted by 6 years of a complicit Republican Congress. Tax hikes? Yes, Democrats rarely have any other choice when trying to clean up the mess that Republicans perpetually make of the economy in their never-ending efforts to secure themselves something for nothing.

As far as ‘liars and thieves,’ well, it wasn’t Democrats who lied us into an ego-driven war of opportunity, then used the occasion to funnel money from the pockets of American citizens into the coffers of their corporate buddies and cohorts.

It is Republican policies, ideologies and actions that brought us to the brink of another depression, then gridlocked Congress and legislatures across the country, with the ‘loyal patriots’ in the GOP playing games, trying to impress their base and regain power for themselves rather than trying to aid the country they so claim to love out of the worst predicament it had experienced in decades.

The only Americans who ‘feel defensive and lack confidence’ are Republicans/Conservatives who think it is their divine right to own and run the world.

    Hear, hear!

Looks like we have some doublespeak and intellectual dishonesty here in the comment section. I’m looking at you first three.

I don’t think it’s right to attack someone’s motives unless he’s being a hypocrite – in this case, I’m seeing a lot of disconnect between party rhetoric and action on spending, among so many other issues.

There’s no doubt about, the current left-wing democratic party will drive this country to run in pursuit of its utopian ideals.

The 60s counter-culture grew up, took over the universities and produced the Barack Obama generation. No concept of patriotism, service, tradition or sacrifice.

Foreign policy based upon trying to empathize and negotiate with our enemies.

Fundamental scorn for all that has stood for America since its founding.

Liberals – they love humanity, but hate people.

By the way, get a thisker skin. I think the “infidel” referance was tongue-in-cheek.

    Crackberry error:

Drive this country to RUIN (not run)

    THICKER skin (not thisker…)

It sounds like being behind in the polls at the national, state, and local levels has the Democrats a little bit edgy, doesn’t it?

  13. Dem Guy

    SeaBee:

Yes, our PRESIDENT has no concept of patriotism or service. Please think about that for a while, and if it doesn’t make your brain melt, please come back to us.

    Unbelievable.

    Dem:

That’s right, he doesn’t. An ambitious and cosmopolitan citizen of the world.

Politics is a career choice for him, not a calling born of love of country.

And it shows in everything he does. Redistributive justice (what the hell is that??), conflating freedom (in the sense of liberty) with “entitlement”, apologizing for American history and foreign policy, denigrating American exceptionalism. The list goes on….

Bad stuff demguy. But America voted for him, so I guess we get what we deserve.

Michael – Calling your comment lying & hypocritical = edgy? Funny, it just feels confident to me.

And those polls? Just keep believing Rasmussen. Much better to put stock in your own propaganda than in the truth.

SeaBee – Please, for your own well-being and potential hypertension, turn off the radio and start thinking for yourself. That Beck-Hannity-Limbaugh stuff will, eventually, make your head explode.

    Bailey:

A pretty vacuous way to respond to views that you don’t agree with.

I don’t care for talk radio or Fox News and I tend to think Beck and OReilley are tabloid charlatans.

But it is entirely true that Obama is not cut from the cloth of every other president. And I don’t mean racially, that is irrelevant to me. I mean philosophically.

He wants to affect a revolution in the social order of this country. Sounds impolitic to say, but its true.

I was proud that we elected a black man to be president, it signified to me that we have, as a nation, truly overcome our racist past.

But look who he is and what he stands for, and it is un-American to the core.

But to quote Tom Petty, “you believe what you wanna believe”.
