Trivedi gets a new fundraiser
Fresh off a big primary win but facing a steep uphill climb in the money race, Democrat Manan Trivedi has hired a new finance director.
Tyler Cole, who most recently was the deputy finance director for Chris Doherty’s gubernatorial campaign, began working on Trivedi’s 6th District race this week. He has also worked for congressional candidate Mary Jo Kilroy and senate candidate Jennifer Brunner, both in Ohio. Megan Wood, who was the campaign’s finance director for the primary, is returning to Virginia to be closer to home.
“He’s got a great story,” Cole said of his new boss in an interview. “And beyond the fact that he’s a great candidate, i think he’ll make a great congressman, so I’m glad to help him get there.”
The pressure on Cole is likely to be intense from the get-go, as early general election fundraising is a high-stakes game for Trivedi, a Reading doctor. He narrowly beat Doug Pike in last month’s primary despite being significantly outspent. But incumbent Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) is sure bring a large war chest to the game, and Republicans at the national level have always spent heavily in the suburban Philadelphia district to defend against Democratic challengers.
Trivedi has at times struggled to raise money, and mostly emptied his campaign coffers to squeak out the primary win. The race is currently No. 4 on the pa2010.com Congressional Power Rankings.
“Obviously whenever you’re a challenger it always presents a tough situation,” Cole said. “Incumbents have the upper hand in fundraising. But I know when peopole talk to Manan and hear his story that we’ll be successful.”

Just putting it out there. But isn’t Trivedi going through staff at a fairly quick pace?
I mean, isn’t this his third or fourth finance director? And isn’t Ed Niles Mr. Trivedi’s second campaign manager? Just sayin. It’s always shady when you here the “leaving to be closer to home” line. Almost like “spending more time with family”.

Find me a campaign staff at this level (for a new candidate) that doesn’t “[go] through staff at fairly quick pace.” Sheesh, this hogwash is really getting stale – it’s same lame line that people thought was so compelling with Joe Sestak.
And “Dem Guy”…really? Why on Earth would a “Dem Guy” raise this question in the first place?
Hopefully for the last time: Absolutely nobody outside of their own families cares about a candidate’s staff. To the voting public, they are invisible. And turnover among them has no relation to a candidate’s strength or weakness at the polls.

Bruce,
Trivedi’ staff turnover rate is kind of absurd. While no one outside the staff families (and Democratic pols) gives a shit about it, it is indicative of the type of organization a candidate is running. He’s following the same strategy that Bob Roggio followed in 2008. Don’t raise much cash, round up the Committeepeople, and hope that someone with a ton of money will come in and run some independent expenditures for you. It didn’t work in 2008 and it won’t work this time around.
As someone likely to be forced to live under the reign of Jim Gerlach for another two years I have to say that I find Manan Trivedi’s Amateur Hour to be rather disappointing.
Now lets look at the history of the person Trivedi brought in. He has worked for:
1. Mary Jo Kilroy – a Democrat who barely won and who had issues raising money.
2. Jennifer Brunner – a Democrat who lost her primary because she couldn’t raise money.
3. Chris Doherty – a Democrat who left the Gubernatorial primary to run for State Senate and who lost in the primary.
So Trivedi, a broke political candidate, is bringing in someone who can’t raise money to help him raise money. The only good thing about Gerlach’s likely re-election is that after next year I won’t be in the district.

Isn’t he the same Tyler Cole that was just a field organizer for Joe Hoeffel’s campaign? That’s a weird transition to make… To finance director… On a top targeted Congressional race?

JoAnne: I didn’t realize that he was an FO for Hoeffel’s campaign. With that said, I wasn’t overwhelmed by Hoeffel’s fundraising or ground game, so one more to the list of failures? When Manan eventually loses to Gerlach I am going to be pissed off.
