Schlafly in ChesCo
A packed house was in Chester County last weekend for Phyllis Schlafly.
On Saturday night at the Aronimink Golf Club, the conservative activist was applauded for her work with Eagle Forum, the organization Schlafly founded in 1972, She’s been called The First Lady of the Conservative Movement, and on this night, she was joined by Keystone State pols including Pat Toomey, Joe Pitts, Glenn Thompson, Jim Gerlach, Dee Adcock, Tom Marino and Rick Hellberg.
Phyllis Schlafly has had many compliments about her work, but none as telling as this from President Ronald Reagan in 1984: “Eagle Forum has set a high standard of volunteer participation in the political and legislative process. … You’ve been out front on so many of the most important issues of our time. … Your work is an example to all those who would struggle for an America that is prosperous and free. … Our nation needs the kind of dedicated individual volunteer service you and Eagle Forum have demonstrated over the last 20 years.”

Some gems from this “example to all” who apparently speaks for Pat Toomey, Jim Gerlach and, of course, Beth Hegedus:
“Sexual harassment on the job is not a problem for virtuous women” – Phyllis Schlafly
“Sex education classes are like in-home sales parties for abortions” – Phyllis Schlafly
“It’s very healthy for a young girl to be deterred from promiscuity by fear of contracting a painful, incurable disease, or cervical cancer, or sterility, or the likelihood of giving birth to a dead, blind, or brain-damaged baby (even 10 years later when she may be happily married).” – Phyllis Schlafly
“There is a strong correlation between belief in evolution and liberal views on government control, pornography, prayer in schools, abortion, gun control, economic freedom, and even animal rights.” – Phyllis Sclafly
…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It is incredible that anyone – let alone candidates for office – would want to be associated with this woman. If you look up the term “Batsh*t Crazy” in the dictionary, it is illustrated with a picture of Phyllis Schlafly.

And people like Schlafly are exactly why I am loath to associate myself with Republicans. I really hate being a small government supporter who sometimes has to coalition with people who actually push those kinds of ideas. It’s why women my age often want nothing to do with the conservative movement.

By the way, for those looking for a real “example to all”, try Supreme Court Justice-to-be Elena Kagan.
The Inquirer’s Editorial today ( http://www.philly.com/dailynews/opinion/20100630_Judicial_activist_par_excellence.html) encouraged her to practice judicial activism once she is seated and lambasted those Republicans who are trying to smear Kagan by insulting the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Here’s a taste:
If confirmed, it’s unlikely that Elena Kagan is going to be free to exercise liberal activism anytime soon since she’d replace the retiring “liberal” Justice John Paul Stevens.
But as the nation faces new and complicated issues – of executive power in the so-called Age of Terror, of the reach of corporate money into the political process, to name just two – we should be so lucky to have a justice dedicated to protecting the people who go “unprotected by every other organ of government.”
