LEFTOVERS: Building trades endorsements, Kanjo negotiates, Jobgate (still) lives

The state’s largest builders union made a pair of post-primary endorsements this week, backing Democratic Senate nominee Joe Sestak and gubernatorial hopeful Dan Onorato. The umbrella Pennsylvania State Building & Construction Trades represents more than 100,000 workers in the state. The group’s present said Frank Sirianni said of Sestak: “Pennsylvania does not need to move backwards by electing a candidate who has already shown his inability to lead as a Congressman. Our council is proud to work hard throughout Pennsylvania to help Joe spread his message and impressive background as a public servant.” Sirianni said Onorato “has proven that he has what it takes to turn our economy around.”

Meanwhile, Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-11) will continue to have a role in the push for financial reform legislation, having been named Wednesday to the conference committee that will reconcile bills passed by the House and Senate. “I am honored to be appointed to negotiate a final agreement to reform Wall Street,” Kanjorski said in a statement. “This legislation will require the most sweeping changes of the financial services sector since the Great Depression, and it will affect how bankers, stock brokers, insurance agents, financial advisers, and others do their jobs for decades to come. I am confident that we can work together quickly to reach an agreement for the American people on a bill that will reform how Wall Street operates.”

And it’s day-nobody-is-still-counting for “Jobgate,” starring the White House and Joe Sestak. In our latest episode, Congressman Darrell Issa, the California Republican who has played Kenneth Starr in this drama, now wants to investigate Rahm Emanuel. Our friends at Pennsylvania Ave. report that Issa asked the Office of Special Counsel to check out if President Obama’s chief of staff crossed a line in trying to keep Sestak out of the Senate race. “Rahm Emanuel was leveraging the power and access of his official position to advance the political interests of the Democratic Party by affecting the result of the Pennsylvania Democratic Primary,” wrote in a letter. This drama has become quite predictable. Issa will actually be at the Republican State Committee summer dinner Friday in Hershey, and if pa2010.com Central can make it there we’ll try chatting him up. Any suggestions for questions to ask?

And jobgate will live, and live, and live until Sestak finally responds to the issue openly instead of delivering the same pitiful canned performance he gave on “Meet the Press.”

He made a big deal out of the alleged “offer” when he was lagging in the primary to come off as the good guy, the man of the people who refused the honey of the elite because he cares so much about ‘us.’

Now it turns out that he made a glacier out of a rain puddle, and he’ll be facing the music until he owns up to the charade he perpetuated on the Democratic base. It was wrong for the president to take sides in a primary battle he was losing, but now that he’s the nominee, this “so-called offer” is none of your business, thank you very much.

He’ll also continue to snub the team of which he’s supposedly always been the “true representative,” but they better be there to share their lists with him and fill his empty coffers with lotsa cash.

    Karma. It’s a lassie.

it is all about electing a Dem…Toomey is a whacko that will hurt this state and the country. Sestak’s got the correct priorities as far as I am concerned.

Dan, I’d ask Issa (and anyone else in the legislative branch for that matter) which system he prefers:

    (1) A completely free game primary system where the party apparatus refrains from endorsing, assisting, or providing any one candidate with monetary and editorial support (no job offers, no sharing of lists, etc.), or

    (2) Candidate-choosing at the party level, similar to that which the British parties utilize, with no open season campaigning?

While (1) maximizes voter choice and involvement, it is expensive and time consuming; (2) is more efficient and is a common feature of parliamentary systems where the election cycles are shorter, but there’s obviously less voter choice.

Which is the most democratic, most efficient, and most desirable?

Since Sestak says that he doesn’t believe endorsements are important, did he tell the Building & Construction Trades “Thanks, but no thanks. You are part of that ‘establishment’ that I was belittling a few weeks ago.”

    Dan,

Ask Congressman Issa how he justifies spending taxpayer time and money on an issue that no one cares about. Oh wait, he’s a Republican trying to score points against the Democrats. I suppose that’s his reason.

Rule 1 from the GOP handbook. Nothing is too trivial to occupy the media, as long as you yell loud enough and long enough. Children… Grow up and govern.

Ask Issa what conversations he’s had with the Toomey campaign regarding “jobgate” and also ask the same about any conversations with STeele and the RNC. You could also ask why a congressman from CA is getting so involved in PA politics.

The DNC needs to dig up some dirt on Issa and send it viral.

I agree with anonymous. CA is maybe the most politically disfunctional state in the union. He should worry about affairs out there.

I think Issa’s connection is either due to the committees he is on that are related to this type of political activities
    …or…
Issa’s name got drawn out of the hat when the GOP was deciding who would be the GOP mouthpiece (attack dog) on this issue.

David remind me,how did the endorsement of specter by the building trades help him secure the nomination? Endorsements are only helpful if they provide boots on the ground.

    Bill-

To follow your last point, Building trades should not give Sestak any money then. If so, they should give him an “un union-like” amount, equal to the percentages that Sestak pays his staffers.

Propaganda Minister for Sestak Bill- (aka PMS Bill)

As the semi-official blogger spokesperson for the Sestak campaign, you are clearly conveying Sestak’s true disdain for the Labor unions. Because, with Joe, it’s not about your actually cause, but whether or not you have resources Joe can use for his own ambitions.

    WestDem-
Sestak has demonstrated that he thinks everybody should work for him for free. “Minimum wage” is a LAW he voted for, but not one he seems to care about following.

Ask Issa how he feels about his role in the destruction of the CA economy. Remember he is the jag-off that was the “father of the CA recall.” Ask him if he would mind staying in his state and stop trying to screw up ours!

    Jun 11th, 2010

    Joe-

Sestak is the one that has set this whole thing off by crying wolf, when it was self-serving and convenient to do so. His spitting on the PA Democratic Party is duly noted.

    Yo Dan —
Can we get a story up about the unfolding drama around leadership of the PA Democratic Committee? According to the latest item on Politicspa.com, Rendell is now pressuring Rooney to stay on until November.

Nothing could be more of a nightmare for PA Democrats than to have this incompetent boob and his henchwoman, Mary Isenhour, hang around throughout this campaign.

There’s lots more to say about this one, which will continue to develop throughout the week ahead.
