Kelly gets a new campaign manager
After emerging from a harrowing, six-way primary in the 3rd Congressional District, Republican Mike Kelly has a new campaign manager as he sets his sights on Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-3).
Josh Snyder has come on board to run Kelly’s campaign. He recently worked as an executive director for Arlen Specter’s state offices before the senator’s party-switch last year. He has also worked in government jobs for former Gov. Tom Ridge and former Congressman Phil English, who Dahlkemper unseated in 2008. He works at Novak Strategic Advisors, the Harrisburg consulting shop founded by former state GOP chairman Alan Novak.
Jon Hopcraft, Kelly’s campaign manager during the primary, has left the campaign to work on Republican Dave Argall’s race in the 17th Congressional District. Both campaigns are centrally run by the Harrisburg firm Long, Nyquist and Associates, which is heading up four, high-profile House races this election cycle.
Kelly has also hired a political director in Melanie Brewer. In a brief interview with pa2010.com, Brewer said she will largely run campaign operations in the Erie region, which is Dahlkemper’s home base and a key population center where Kelly has to play catch up. Snyder will focus on the surrounding areas in the northwest Pennsylvania district, including Kelly’s home base in Butler, where the candidate owns a prominent car dealership.

Saying that Mr. Kelly has to play catch-up in Erie is a huge understatement. The Republicans erred by not nominating a candidate from the Erie area; cutting into the Democratic base vote in Erie County is how Tom Ridge and Phil English held the seat for so long.
