Group wants Corbett to return cash from company with BP ties

An environmental group is calling on Republican Tom Corbett to return campaign cash he received from an energy company that is drilling in the Marcellus Shale because it also has an ownership stake in the BP well spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania called on Corbett, the state Attorney General and Republican candidate for governor, to return $3,000 he received from the company’s political action committee last month, three weeks after the spill began.

“You don’t get to light your neighbor’s house on fire and then use the hose to water your rose bushes,” said Josh McNeil, the group’s executive director. “Mr. Corbett has a responsibility to rebuke this company for its failures and to help ensure that every dollar at Anadarko’s disposal is spent to help the victims of the Gulf spill.”

A Corbett campaign spokesman did not return an e-mail seeking comment.

I sent the letter below to the group “Conservation Voters of PA” for their blatant hypocrisy:

I saw your press release demanding Tom Corbett return the $6,000 campaign contribution he got from the Anadarko PAC (though PAC money comes from individuals, not the corporation), because Anadarko owned 25% of the Deepwater Horizon rig.

I’m a little perplexed by your sudden concern. After all, you raised no concern when Gov. Rendell gave Anadarko a no-bid contract to lease state forest lands for less than the going market price.

You also have as yet failed to call out so-called environmental groups which accepted direct corporate contributions from BP – including PennFuture, which took $40,000 – and have yet to return the money. This funding of course, unlike PAC money, could actually be used to clean up the Gulf.

If you truly care about the issue, you will call on Gov. Rendell to rescind the Anadarko contract, and PennFuture to return the BP money. If not, your call on Corbett to return PAC funds comes across as nothing more than a partisan stunt.

In another development, rank-and-file voters are asking Onorato and other Democrats to return millions of dollars in union contributions because public and private unions are bankrupting taxpayers and killing the economy. Details at eleven.

Did President Obama return his BP money? If so, I must have missed it.

    Way to go, Nathan!
These clowns have been getting away with raw hypocrisy for years, with selective outrage aimed at those that disagree with them on legitimate policy grounds. The environmental groups in question are ideologues who are simply advocates of a lower standard of living, and opponents of environmentally desireable energy options like natural gas and nuclear.

Will a REAL candidate for governor of this state please stand up? Absolutely atrocious choice between these two. Pa. taxpayers are being shortchanged, again.
