Dems tie Toomey to Big Oil, but Republican claims middle ground

Dems tie Toomey to Big Oil, but Republican claims middle ground

With oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico unabated, Democrats are making their most sustained efforts to date to link Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey to the oil industry, highlighting campaign contributions from the sector and votes in Congress to allow expanded drilling. But their criticisms are being at least slightly undercut by the fact that the leader of their party, President Obama, agrees with Toomey on one critical issue: both favor continued off-shore drilling.

The Democratic onslaught has come in the form of research documents and rehashed statements, including one embedded below in which Toomey called in 2007 for more off-shore drilling. Party organizations have mostly carried the load, leaving Democratic nominee Joe Sestak to keep the focus on his own positions (Sestak is holding a town hall meeting this weekend to discuss development of the state’s Marcellus Shale natural gas bonanza).

This week, the state Democratic Party noted that Toomey has accepted tens of thousands in campaign contributions from the industry, including cash from the oft-loathed Halliburton. The party also pointed out that Toomey, while in Congress, supported drilling in national monuments, the Great Lakes, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

“Halliburton has settled on Pat Toomey as their favorite candidate this election cycle, and their big investments in him are paying dividends,” state party spokesman Patrick McKenna said in a statement. “Despite the worst environmental disaster in history, and with thousands of jobs on the Gulf coast threatened, Toomey continues to chant drill baby, drill, and then turns around and accepts record amounts of money from Big Oil and gas. We knew Toomey was a rubber stamp for his Wall Street buddies, but now it’s clear he’s the ultimate shill for his Big Oil and gas backers as well.”

Toomey’s campaign struck back Wednesday, saying that his views and Obama’s “converge” on off-shore drilling, while Sestak remains on the “far-left fringe.”

“In the wake of the BP disaster, it is very important that we have the appropriate safety standards in place,” Toomey said in a statement, “but we have to take into account the tens of thousands of jobs the region stands to lose and our increased dependence on foreign oil if we go too far in placing an across-the-board moratorium. I applaud President Obama for moving to lift the moratorium on shallow-water drilling. In addition, I strongly believe that the current liability cap for damages caused by the oil spill is grossly inadequate and needs to be raised to a multi-billion dollar level. The last thing we need is another taxpayer-funded bailout of corporate failures.”

McKenna, for his part, scoffed at Toomey’s attempt to claim the middle ground.

“It’s a political stunt designed to pull the wool over the eyes of Pennsylvania voters,” McKenna said. “Halliburton has given more money to Toomey than any other Senate candidate because he has been a consistent and ardent advocate for policies which would allow oil companies to police themselves. We all know how well that worked out in the Gulf.”

Toomey doesn’t care about safety and about the 11 people who died — when it may prevent more Big Oil profits. That’s how he will vote – not caring about the safety of people.

“GOP Senate Candidate: Drill, Baby, Drill”

“Pat Toomey said in a Friday interview with Pennsylvania Public Radio. Forgoing opportunities to tap new petrol deposits helps keep the nation dependent on foreign sources of energy, he said.

President Obama acted too hastily in issuing a moratorium on further drilling, Toomey believes.”

I wouldn’t say Toomey doesn’t care about the people who died on the rig. That’s unfounded and unnecessarily harsh. I think one can say that it’s shortsighted Toomey, who’s such an ardent proponent of business interests, would miss the opportunity to advance subsidies and tax incentives for big businesses researching and developing alternative sources of energy.

Blaming anyone but BP and their contractor for this catastrophe accomplishes nothing: Pat Toomey didn’t blow the hole, and Obama can’t dive beneath the gulf and plug it up.

What they can do is recognize this opportunity to spur SERIOUS DEVELOPMENT of new technologies, thereby ending our reliance on fossil fuels and the need to even think about offshore drilling.

    @alpa and Matt

Perhaps it would be better stated to say that Toomey is less concerned about the risks to those working on the oil drilling rigs that are created by cutting corners on safety measures than he is about Big Oil adding to its obscene profits by reducing the safety of the workers.

  4. WE NEED TO HARVEST OUR OWN OIL THATS WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT

    Jun 9th, 2010

WE CANT KEEP LETTING ARABS CLEAN OUR CLOCKS WITH THEIR OIL we have more than they do offshore and if we dont harvest it someone else will we only have a 5 mile terirtorial limit those Arabs can come in and Drill right off of our Coast Both Political Parties take Money from Big Oil so dont try to Put the whole Oil Spill Rap on Toomey We Have a Foreign Compnay here Drilling for OUR Oil They Make the Profits Not American Oil Companies again More Money being sucked out of the USA The Giant Sucking Sound as Ross Perot used to say DRILL BABY DRILL we can always Mass Produce Wildlife Later Like we have Fish Farms we can Have Pelican Farms so Lets Get Drilling Baby

Toomey has failed to frame himself in this campaign, he veers between the right and the middle like a kite in a crosswind. His failure will allow the Dems to frame him as a big business, big oil, Wall street and Washington insider candidate, pretty much exactly what the public doesn’t want. Linking himself to Obama’s policies is probably Toomey’s death rattle and gives Sestak the anti-Obama candidate mantle. Toomey needs to link Sestak to Obama and that is becoming increasingly hard to do, especially after Issa’s foolish attempt to discredit Sestak for rejecting Obama’s offer.

Toomey hasn’t framed himself yet because he hasn’t had to. Without a primary challenge, he didn’t need to spend loads of money to acquaint himself with the base when most of the electorate wasn’t paying attention, and since he’s smart, he’ll probably spend most of the summer raising money to get ready for the fall ad blitz.

Since Sestak had to position himself to the left of Arlen Specter to attract the Democrats who couldn’t swallow Arlen Specter as a (D), Toomey can use his $4MM or so a$enal to design a steady ad campaign that paints him in the center with Sestak on the far left. All he needs to do is air footage of Sestak’s primary campaign…to say nothing of jobgate.

    Will it work? ….

If that’s his plan, Toomey better get started. He’s been wasting time.

I hpe that’s Toomey’s plan…trying to frame the opponent instead of defining yourself worked so well for Specter…People in PA want to know what you stand for not how you’re going to say NO. Also, 1.2 Million voter disadvantage…tough for Toomey to overcome

Of course Toomey wants to stay quiet and avoid talking about his extreme right wing views!

If he actually started talking about his past, his extreme right wing positions and actual voted on many things when he was in Congress, it would be extremely offensive to many Pennsylvania Voters.

For those who support Sestak just simply tell your friends to do a little digging into Toomey’s past votes and that is all that is need to turn them off and want to voter for any but Toomey.

His extreme pro-life religious right positions on abortion shows that he is actually farther to the right of Rick Santorum. Yes, farther to the right than Santorum. If you can not recall, Santorum lost his US Senate race for a reason.

While Pennsylvanians are primarily pro-life they don’t want government telling them what to do.

Democrats everywhere should thank Pat Toomey for another early Christmas gift. Sensible Republicans everywhere in this great Commonwealth still have time to rally to Joe Sestak, who would make a much better candidate than the tone-deaf Pat Toomey.

Toomey says we have to worry about the jobs that might be lost to a moratorium.

What about the jobs that have already been lost due to this spill? Fisherman? Tourism? Tone-deaf, and repeating the mantra. WTG Pat.
