Specter sinks, Williams rises, Sestak endorses: Notes on a bizarre primary season

1. I don’t know if Joe Sestak is going to beat Arlen Specter—it looks increasingly likely—but the Sestak ad showing George Bush endorsing Specter is just about the most devastating TV spot I’ve ever seen. By contrast, Specter has been talking about Sestak’s Navy record and how he (Specter) can keep bringing more pork home. If the ads tell the story, Arlen is in deep trouble, indeed.

2. I’ve been watching politics for a long time, but I can’t remember a campaign more bizarre than Anthony Williams’ quest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. The campaign seems to consist exclusively of lining up endorsements from Philadelphia-area Democrats, no doubt sure he won’t be elected anyway, and raking in money from the ever-opportunistic school choice crowd. If this is the “new politics” the Democrats promised us, they’re in more trouble than I thought.

3. And it’s touching to see that Sestak has endorsed Bryan Lentz for his House seat, now that Lentz has knocked all the other Democrats off the primary ballot. I was sort of hoping he would endorse Republican Pat Meehan—or get back in the race himself. Unfortunately for Specter, it’s probably too late for that now.

    Michael-
I know you and the Toomey campaign would view a Sestak primary win as an early Christmas present.

Specter has every right, and indeed every obligation, to push Sestak to come clean about his departure from the Navy.

Sestak can’t tout his record at every turn and then turn purple when he’s questioned on it, especially when it’s obvious that there’s substance behind the allegations that call into question his ability to serve in a 100-person body where temperament and reputation are the chief currency.

Williams is the story. He has excited the city and he will win on Tuesday.
