Corrections (of the more embarrassing kind)
Despite the slow news week, there are a couple particularly shameful errors that call for corrections. A reminder that you can always view all corrections by clicking on pAn article Tuesday cited a report by emFishbowlDC/em that said emCNN/em chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta was supporting 6th District Democratic candidate Manan Trivedi. Full StoryColeman group airs ad boosting Dent, Gerlach
Months ahead of competitive general election contests, Congressmen Jim Gerlach (R-6) and Charlie Dent (R-15) are already getting some help.
American Action Network, a conservative policy group, recently began airing a TV ad that bills the two incumbents as lawmakers who “understand what businesses need.”
The size of the ad buy remains unclear; since the spot doesn’t directly advocate the election or defeat of a political candidate, the group was not required to immediately disclose…
Full StoryOdds and ends from a slow news week (Updated)
My colleagues in the press will come after me if this jinxes it, but what the heck: After the primary madness we just experienced, slow news weeks like this are a nice change of pace.
But there’s always news, so here’s a rundown of just some of what’s going on.
pThe big news of the week is probably Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-8) taking the lead on moving forward with a legislative repeal of the military’s Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell policy that prohibits gays from serving openly. The Iraq War veteran is one of the lead sponsors, along with Senator Joe Liberman (I-Conn.), of a amendment to the defense authorization bill that would repeal the policy, and is hoping to bring it to the floor for a vote later this week. a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/05/murphy_we_have_votes_to_repeal.html" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://voices.washingtonpost.com']);return TrackClick("http%3A%2F%2Fvoices.washingtonpost.com%2Fplum-line%2F2010%2F05%2Fmurphy_we_have_votes_to_repeal.html','Murphy+told+Greg+Sargent+that+he+has+the+votes+to+pass+it')" target="_blank"Murphy told Greg Sargent that he has the votes to pass it/a, despite the Pentagon’s desire to hold off for now./p
p“We are committed to repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, a policy that has forced thousands of gay men and women from serving openly in our Armed Forces,” Murphy and Lieberman said in a statement Monday. “It is our firm belief that it is time to repeal this discriminatory policy that not only dishonors those who are willing to give their lives in service to their country but also prevents capable men and women with vital skills from serving in the armed forces at a time when our nation is fighting two wars.”/p
pMeanwhile, the nuggets of news keep on coming in the mysterious case of Joe Sestak’s White House offer. emPolitico/em a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthrush/0510/Durbin_Sestak_needs_to_explain_job_offer.html" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://www.politico.com']);return TrackClick("http%3A%2F%2Fwww.politico.com%2Fblogs%2Fglennthrush%2F0510%2FDurbin_Sestak_needs_to_explain_job_offer.html','reports')" target="_blank">reports that Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin is the latest Democrat to say more details need to come to light. “At some point, I think…
Rematch near, Murphy makes ‘FitzFlop’ argument
When former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick was facing a primary challenge this year, conservative opponent Gloria Carlineo’s campaign message was simple: that Fitzpatrick couldn’t be trusted after changing his positions and rhetoric on major issues.
Now that Fitzpatrick has easily captured his party’s nomination, the man he faces in the general election, Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-8), appears set to seize on the same campaign theme.

Full StoryRothfus sets sights on Altmire, big spending
When it comes to congressional campaigns, all publicity is not good publicity.
That is the lesson Republicans are taking from the results of last week’s 4th District Republican primary, in which underdog lawyer Keith Rothfus comfortably beat the well-known former U.S. attorney Mary Beth Buchanan. Rothfus secured almost two-thirds of the vote, despite Buchanan’s high level of name recognition in the District.
In that contest, Buchanan’s campaign stayed on the defensive for weeks and committed…

Republican Pat Toomey says he doesn’t want to talk about Democrat Joe Sestak’s claim that the White House offered him a job to bow out of last week’s primary. But Toomey also says his office is getting deluged with media inquiries on the matter, and that Sestak should put it to rest once and for all.
“From day one, our campaign has been focused on the critical issues facing Pennsylvania, like jobs, the economy, and…
