Muhlenberg Tracking Poll: Specter by 5, Onorato at 34 percent

Every day from now until the May 18 primary, pa2010.com will publish the results of the Muhlenberg College tracking poll on the statewide Democratic primaries. To follow our posts on these surveys, click on the Tracking Poll tag.

The Muhlenberg College tracking poll released Thursday shows Arlen Specter’s lead over Joe Sestak dipping to five points, 45 percent to 40 percent, with 14 percent undecided. That marks Specter’s lowest level of support in five days of tracking polls, and the highest proportion of undecided voters. Sestak has been steady at 40-42 percent.

In the governor’s race, Dan Onorato wins 34 percent of the vote, the same as the day before and 22 points over his closest rival. Joe Hoeffel has been rising, from six percent on May 2 to 12 percent Thursday. Onorato’s support has dipped from 41 percent on May 2. Anthony Williams and Jack Wagner have held steady at about eight percent the last few days, and 39 percent are still undecided.

The survey of 406 likely primary voters, conducted May 2-May 5, had a margin of error of five percent.

Ah, what will all the angry haters say about this? Will they still try to spin the Admiral’s solid momentum as a fluke? How sad it is to watch good Democrats desperately prop up the Bushie Republican Specter as he fizzles.

Can anyone now say with a straight face that the Admiral’s recent launch of “Bushie and Specter” TV ads won’t further sink Specter’s chances?

prediction – sestak just barely squeaks a win on the 18th. specter just doesn’t have it in him anymore. go pens!

great news that specter’s support is falling. PA is finally realizing that there is a better candidate than a 30 yr GOP senator who would hold rallies for Richard Nixon. can’t wait til sestak is in the plus!

Onorato is now below 40 favorable. He’s going in the box!

As Dan pointed out, Sestak isn’t getting above the 40-42 range.

Joe had movement going from low 30′s up to 40-42, but is stalled there.

Also, I noticed that the poll includes “leaners”.

The other interesting factor is that the survey is limited to voters who voted in 2006. Does that include current Democrats who were Republicans in 2006? Does it include people who voted in the 2006 primary, or just voted in either 2006 Gen or Primary.
I don’t think it includes people that registered in 2008. Obama’s used his network to email supporters on Specter’s behalf. Though it’s unclear whether the new voters would lean toward Specter or Sestak. These new voters haven’t spent “decades” voting against Specter, and it’s unclear how much the name-recognition is going to be a factor.

Specter still has his Obama endorsement ad to put out. He got great footage when Obama visited in September. Joe’s still running on “bio” and “not Arlen”.

I still think Specter should put out “endorse by Eric Massa” ads. :-)

again, this race is close, but there’s got to be something wrong with the selection of voters polled. it is clear that progressives are supporting hoeffel, but there is nothing to explain his support doubling over the five polls, especially since the “not sure” percentages have been consistant, even rising since the middle of the week. i mention progressives since we favor sestak by as much as a 3 to 1 margin (DFA endorsement vote) and this poll does not question type of democrat, i.e. progressive, moderate, conservative. some days may have an oversampling of progressives when sestak is closer and conservatives when specter widens the lead. we may have to wait until a different poll is released next week by either quinnipiac or rasmussen to find a better sample size that is more likely to resemble the democratic electorate. sestak is well within striking distance of specter, but perhaps not within the margin of error as the poll indicates.

Massa is a name most rank-and-file Democratic voters never heard of nor care about. Specter’s longtime friends Bush, Santorum, Palin? Ah, those are names we know. Even President Obama and Governor Rendell won’t cause us to forget those close associations.

What will the angry haters say when the Admiral continues to surge and exceeds 40% in multiple polls? Spin, spin away desperate fellows.

    Senator (gag) Sestak-

What will the supporters say when Sestak stays stuck in the mud at 40%?

(It’s a trick question: they’ll be too busy crying and whine to say anything)

Actually, it wouldn’t take more than a few second clip of Massa talking about “tickling” to remind folks who he is, and then put that next to Sestak proudly accepting Massa’s endorsement.

    The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder:

    http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/05/sestak-goes-for-the-kill-on-specter/56310

“The White House and senior Democrats have grown increasingly nervous that Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched parties last year, will lose his Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak. A senior political strategist who is consulted by the White House puts the odds at ’50/50.’”

Its so sad, Diano wonders if the young Democrats will break for Specter because they havnt spent decades voting against him. Young voters have no reason to vote FOR him. He is old news, Obama supporters want more Democrats that are actually going to spend the next six years pushing the agenda that got them involved in the first place, not some old guy who told them they were wrong to vote for Obama and that McCain/Palin was the better ticket.

Joe is gonna win!!! The momentum is on his side, the wind is at his back!!! On May 18, vote for a True Blue instead of a Turncoat!

    Haverford Dem-
My point is that they won’t base going against Specter based on 30 years of pent up hate and rage.

Though, I pretty much expect young voters to stay at home and have very low turnout, I think for the ones that do show up, Specter’s name recognition will help him.

    Taj-
Do you dress up in a cheerleader costume before you post?

    Bruce-
Obama’s expected to campaign for Specter. I think Obama knows how to make a closing argument the case for Arlen.

    Diano,

You have too many fantasies about men. Are you repressed? You are fixated on Massa. Now you fantasize about Taj as a cheerleader. Did you have fantasies about Bush too? He was a cheerleader.

It just seems right to point out that while Onorato’s numbers decrease and Williams and Wagner hold “steady,” Hoeffel has gained every day.

I was just curious if all the Sestak supporters have odd sexual fetishes.

My fantasies about Bush just have him in court being tried for War Crimes with Cheney very nervous that Bush will tell all.

Hi. I think that U.S. Senator Arlen Specter is a better choice for Pennsylvania in 2010 than Joe Sestak!
