Meehan setting the agenda in 7th District debates

Meehan setting the agenda in 7th District debates

In the world of political debates, it’s standard practice for competing campaigns to work together toward accepting invitations from civic and media groups, and scheduling debates accordingly. But in the fiercely-competitive 7th Congressional District, Republican Pat Meehan is setting the table by himself.

Meehan’s campaign is in the process of trying to schedule 10 debates unilaterally. It is taking advantage of an opening provided by Democrat Bryan Lentz, who said he would debate Meehan “any place, any time,”—and the Meehan campaign is expecting Lentz to show up.

“In the past, Bryan Lentz has claimed he would debate me anytime and anywhere and I am happy to hold him to that commitment,” Meehan said in a statement last week.

By all indications, Lentz, a state Representative, will do just that—”we’re perfectly willing to play ball with his list,” a Lentz aide said. But that doesn’t mean his campaign is thrilled with Meehan’s go-it-alone tack, especially since the Meehan camp isn’t responding to outside invitations until it has completed its own scheduling. For example, Phil Heron, editor of the The Delaware County Daily Times, has agreed to moderate a debate hosted by the local steelworkers’ union. Lentz’s campaign has accepted, while Meehan has yet to give a definitive response.

There’s no denying that Lentz provided the opportunity for Meehan to go this route. Nonetheless, his campaign is saying the scheduling decisions show Meehan doesn’t want to debate in good faith.

“Pat Meehan’s entire career has been a propped up charade and their plan is to make this debate series follow suit,” Lentz campaign manager Vincent Rongione said. “It’s clear this guy is unwilling to debate in a reasonable and open manner.”

Lentz is eager to challenge Meehan directly in the debates. And with less county-name recognition and campaign cash than Meehan, conventional wisdom is that the coming debates are a higher-stakes game for Lentz, with Meehan having more to lose. Several political operatives in both parties consulted by pa2010.com said it was rare for campaigns to schedule debates without consulting opposing campaigns, especially as an opening move. It happens more often when one candidate appears unwilling to debate under any circumstances.

“I’ve seen it, but only when it’s done as a ploy,” said one Republican consultant. “Typically it happens when you have someone who doesn’t really want to debate and is doing so on their own terms. Anyone who does that is being disingenuous.

“In fairness,” this consultant added about Lentz’s initial “any place, any time” challenge, “it seems it’s a gambit going back and forth here.”

Meehan campaign manager Bryan Kendro said the campaign would consider outside invitations after it was finished scheduling its own series of debates. He rejected any assertion that the debates were being in any way cherry-picked to benefit Meehan, a former U.S. Attorney, and noted that the groups being asked to host represent a wide array of public policy issues. And he said the campaign was only setting dates and locations, not debate ground rules.

“If someone wants to make the argument that we’re picking these groups for some advantage, they’re free to make that argument,” Kendro said. “But we’ve picked these organizations to make it hard for anyone to see them as overly-ideological, and we’re not stacking the deck.”

Other than debates the campaign wants to be hosted by the Delaware County Patriots, a Tea Party group, and conservative radio talk-show host Dom Giordano, the other groups chosen by the Meehan campaign are not particularly ideological.

Rongione, Lentz’s campaign manager, took greatest issue with the Meehan campaign for not yet accepting the invitation to the steelworkers’ debate.

“We’ve got the editor of the main daily newspaper in the district, you couldn’t ask for a more unbiased and fair venue,” Rongione said. “So let’s do it. No one schedules debates unilaterally.”

The race is currently No. 1 on the pa2010.com Congressional Power Rankings.

    Lentz is toast.

The Deily Times is a liberal rag and Heron is a donkey apologist. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just kidding to themselves. When was the last time the Steelworkers Union endorsed a Republican?

Spending 20 seconds with Bryan Lentz tells you he is not only smart but fearless. So, I would not presume he is not happy to go anywhere anytime and debate anyone.
This high school dabating rules quibbling for the poly sci weenies running campaigns stuff is so weak. Let it rip.
I want to hear what they have to say about substantive stuff.
Maybe Pat Meehan was getting his tough guy game face on with Steele in hardscrabble Blue Bell the other day.

Anywhere and anytime, doesn’t mean with any particular right-wing douche-bag moderator or organization.

Lentz’s gravelly baritone and excellent record of public service will be music to voters’ ears. Bring it on!

“consider outside invitations after it was finished scheduling its own series of debates”

what an arrogant a_hole Meehan is. He will lose the debates anyway – Meehan will come across arrogant – and with Zero policy knowledge.

So of its not a Bush-Rove type setup – Meehan is too chicken to debate. LOL.

You liberals are a funny bunch. Lentz could be the best debater in the history of the world and it wouldn’t matter. He’ll drown in the anti-Democrat tidal wave that is about to come crashing down in the 7th District and countless other congressional districts in five short months.

Keep babbling about his oratory, though. Whatever it takes to get you through a miserable election season. Like a shot of feel-good crack for hopelessly confused junkies.

94 – And you think that…why? Because some tiny band of tea party true believers that worship Sarah Palin and are motivated by the ravings of right-wing lunatic radio hosts and Fox News propaganda show up in public from time to time?

The fact is Americans, and certainly Pennsylvanians, are mostly smarter than that. And they know how to piece the puzzle to together.

And they know just how bad things were two years ago, and they know which party has tried to fix things, and which party has spent two years just saying No.

Personally, I can’t wait for November. I love to win.

    May 27th, 2010

    Bruce-
While one would hope that Americans, and especially Pennsylvanians, are smarter than that, I’ve got my doubts.
We seem to have more idiots than ever before. We’ve got less than half the population believing evolution.

Sometimes I think we’d do better with a random lottery to select representatives from the general population. You’d probably get better demographic representation.

Personally, unless it looks like Lentz vs Meehan is close, I might not even bother voting this November. I can join the majority that are too disappointed in the choices.
I’ll probably come out because Lentz will need every vote and deserves my vote.

  12. 1994 Again

    May 27th, 2010

Bailey, you are an elitist snob. No doubt you’ll be as insufferable in defeat.

    May 28th, 2010

Meehan is a paper tiger…he may not be arrogant but the machine that fathered him politically certainly is…Bryan…take the 10 debates…then embarass Meehan when he won’t take the steamfitters or others that may come up. I would definitely take on the tea party group bc that may bite him in the rear end.

  14. C Guiney

    May 28th, 2010

Just wondering… if these 10 debates conflict with business in Harrisburg, will Meehan then attack Lentz for making the difficult decision of which event to attend?
Will he unilaterally plan the debates to conflict with family celebrations, or announced Lentz events?
Or will he be a reasonable human being and respectfully coordinate these debates with Lentz and his staff?

In the past, Meehan was unwilling to fully participate in debates planned by others.

True statesman learn to achieve the best
results for the public they serve by seeking reasonable debate. Bullys try to intimidate and criticize.

Fortunately, we as a society have come to learn how to recignize bullys. They may think they dominate initially, but when faced with courage, they back down. We are watching to see if one will be uncovered here.

Did any of the Tea baggers win their race for Republican committee?

And The second question is bigger than the first. Did any Republican in office in the area back them in this process. Esp the one Barrar cough cough who showed up mugging for the camera with them.

By the way the Reps at my polling place not only were they handing out lit against not voting for the Tea party. They were laughing at them as well.

And I can see why the Tea Bagger that was on the
ballot was the first one to vote but, she left right after that without working for her own
election? Her daughter came later voted and only
stayed 10 min. after handing out stuff.

What do with a tea bag after you use it you throw it away.

  16. Bruce Bailey

    May 28th, 2010

94 – You can’t argue the issues, so you insult me personally? Sounds like the Repub politics of smear to me. Good luck with that.

DLewis – At my polling place in Montco, the Repub committee posts were vacant, so two Tea Baggers showed up with pre-printed instructions on how to write them in for the slots.

Sounds as if there was a coordinated effort by these Tea Partiers to take a leading role in Repub party operations. I really hope they’re successful; it’ll mean even more growth for Democrats in SE PA.

  17. 1994 Again

    May 28th, 2010

Bailey, you don’t discuss issues. You are just a broken record, constantly whining about Bush, Cheney, Palin, Tea Party activists, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile your hero Obama has approval ratings under 50% nationwide and here in PA. Over half the country doesn’t like his leadership and agenda and you babble about the GOP. Your party is SO screwed this fall and you don’t even realize it. Keep up the Bush bashing…it’s fun to watch Moonbats live in the past.

  18. P Lombardo

I am astounded by the personal attacks by many of the left-wing commenters. You’re message is detracted by language such as “douchebags” “a_hole” “teabaggers” etc. I would like to keep the banter classy or at least respectful. I understand that for the most part it’s hard for dems to use facts or logic and avoid personal attacks, but please step up the conversation. Elevate your minds!

  19. David Lewis

    May 28th, 2010

Teabaggers don’t call themsevles Tea Baggers? Come on Where’s the logic in that lol.
As for the facts we are still undoing the mess that was left from the last President.

  20. Dale Gundy

    Anthracite Alum-

When we finally succeed in dissecting your poor sentence structure, we realize that you are just a barnacle of a staffer on Lent’z a**, struggling to find something positive to say about his radical liberal agenda. Save the Poli Sci weenie talk and keep pretending you actually won a debate in your life. I love listening to your jargon about substantive issues. Please, I’m begging you, enlighten us on how Bryan Lentz will help return this nation to a state of economic stability. Keep trashing Mr. Meehan, it’s fine, it will probably be easier for you if you don’t try to rap your peanut of a brain around the fact that Lentz is rubber stamp for Nanci Pelosi and has no shot at winning in November. Your “smart and fearless” leader will sound very brave and intelligent when he makes his concession call in November.

    alpa-

I’m surprised, Bryan Lentz is going back on his declaration to debate Meehan “any place, any time, anywhere.” I really thought that for a split second we actually had a shot of Mr. Lentz breaking the mold of false promises that President Obama himself isn’t courageous enough to break. I guess I was wrong, Lentz is just the same as every other politician.

    C Guiney-

Put down your pillow and blanket, I think it’s safe to come out of your Mommy’s basement. All this “true statesmen” and “bully” talk is starting to make me think you just passed a second grade civics course. Please stop wasting space on this page, it’s painful scrolling through your nonsense .

    Dem’s-

Incumbents are an endangered species; you should probably hurry up and try to write Nanci Pelosi, I don’t know if she has time to ram a 2,000 page bill through protecting them.

  21. C Guiney

    May 28th, 2010

    Dale Gundy-
    Did you read the article?
Lentz is not backtracking – his office seems to be pointing out the arrogance of unilateral scheduling.
Next time I visit my mother, I will be sure to give her your regards.

  22. Matt M.

    May 30th, 2010

Dale- I think it’s fairly obvious that Lentz was making clear a general and open willingness to debate Meehan. Certainly nobody would expect Lentz to agree to debate Meehan if he selected 2am on a Sunday morning, so your outrage seems a little misplaced.

Both of these candidates have impressive resumes, but Lentz’s is undoubtedly superior (military service and legislative experience), whereas Meehan’s is more limited and arguably unsuited to legislative service. Just because Lentz has a (D) at the end of his name does not mean he’s a “rubber stamp” for anyone, and given the number of bills he’s introduced in the PA legislature, he is by all indications an independent and free-thinking mind.

  23. Lana

    May 31st, 2010

Why is Meehan even on the ballot ? He should have been thrown off with all his fake signatures but he wasn’t as it was heard by a a repuk judge. I know a person that still is crying as she is afraid of going to jail, she a Democrat was paid by Summer’s of UD a good amount of money to get the signatures.
Not knowing anything about the process she did just that. Maybe I can get her to come to some of the debates just to confront Meehan who thinks he is above the law to admit the truth, that is if he even has heard of the truth. I know alot of republicans that would just be outraged at what Meehan has done but they just want to win at all costs. So much for integrity !

  24. Notsure

    Jun 1st, 2010

For all is affability, Meehan has spent his life as Arlen Specter’s “guy”. Every position he has held is out of Arlen’s largess and deal making. All of the screwed up Petitions and fraud were a result of having to rely on strangers i.e. the vestiges of the war board who have devolved into creepy cartoon characters.
Bryan is a man of his own making and he has fought both figuratively and in reality to be a distinct man with his own ideas and principals.
Pat again, unfortunately, stuck flacking the national republican “talking points”.
Poll tested crap is still crap- once Pat starts saying what he really thinks that would make for a more interesting comparison with Lentz.
Methinks Pat is going to stay on talking points
    Unfortunately .
