LEFTOVERS: Rendell lauds Williams, MoveOn backs Sestak, Lasher for Kelly

His efforts to publicly stay neutral aside, everyone assumes that Gov. Ed Rendell has a horse in the Democratic primary to succeed him, and that that person is Dan Onorato. So heads were turned Friday when Rendell had such effusive praise for Onorato’s chief rival, Anthony Williams. After Williams and Senator Arlen Specter were formally endorsed by the Philadelphia Black Clergy, Rendell, according to The Daily News, said that “I am incredibly impressed with the campaign [Williams] has waged. And he’s always been one of the brightest people in the building.”

Pennsylvania Public Radio reporter and friend-of-the-site Scott Detrow also noted Rendell’s praise, reporting that the governor said Williams “has earned the support of people in Philadelphia and throughout the entire southeast—and for that matter, throughout the entire state. Because he’s talked about issues and change. … Some of the things he would do [would build] upon what we’ve done as an administration. But some of the things he would do in a different course. And just because it’s a different course doesn’t mean it’s not good for the commonwealth.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak kept up his momentum with the liberal base, winning the support of MoveOn.org. Politico reports that two-thirds of the group’s Pennsylvania members voted to back Sestak over Republican-turned-Democrat Arlen Specter. This comes after Sestak captured endorsements from both the National Organization for Women and NARAL Pro-Choice.

And in the closing days before the 3rd District primary, Republican Mike Kelly got the support of a former candidate for the seat. Brian Lasher, who dropped out of the race to unseat incumbent Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper last year, said Kelly “demonstrates strong family values and is loyal to conservative principles. … While I am impressed with all the Republican candidates and will support whoever wins this nomination, it is my belief that Mike Kelly is the best choice on May 18th.”

MoveOn is still simmering over Anita Hill, while rejecting the 30+ years of support Specter has unflappably given women’s rights.

Sestak only became a Democrat in 2006 because Curt Weldon, his opponent, was a Republican. What fealty has he shown the women’s movement in four years of (less than laudatory) attendance in Congress? The myopia of some of these groups is truly disheartening.

    George-

I think you have last-few-days-before-the-election memory loss. Before Sestak registered Dem in 2006, he was a non-partisan officer in the Navy. Before Specter registered Dem in 2009, he was a Republican for 40 plus years who supported Rick Santorem, George Bush and Dick Cheney, and McCain and Palin. Kind of blunts your point, don’t you think?

The shameful way that Specter treated Anita Hill for purely political purposes, in the event that you didn’t live through it, is worth remembering. Those who don’t remember history are doomed to repeat it.

    Lee,
Well put. There is a tradition of flag officers in the military service not registering as members of a political party. Colin Powell, for example, was a registered independent during his years of military service. I want flag officers who are non-partisan. I would hold it against any who are registered as Republican or Democratic. Sestak is a patriot. Specter is anything but.

  4. SPECTER IS DONE

    May 15th, 2010

Specter Might as well start Packing up his Office Now cause he is Moving out in January Bye Bye Specter you Cantankerous Kermudgeon you

Williams is in the race for ONE reason only: to improve AA voter turnout in Philly, which the machine thinks will help Specter.

What did some of you take Williams’ candidacy at face value? Hah, welcome to PA politics. To be honest, I did too, but was extremely puzzled because Williams’ late entry and sudden appearance of massive $ makes NO sense. Then someone explained the political reality to me and I get it. It is just another front in the effort to purchase Specter’s seat … which will give it to Toomey … and so also makes no sense but the Rendell/Specter people don’t actually care about what is good for the people of PA.

    Rob-
Sestak wasn’t a “flag” officer when he started. His parents and siblings weren’t either. Yet, they didn’t register as Dems until Joe decided to run for office, put his finger in the wind, saw which way the wind was blowing, and picked DEM.

  7. Rob

    May 15th, 2010

David, that is a complete rationalization. The person you describe is Specter, not Sestak. Only your obsessive hatred blinds you to that fact.

  8. David Diano

    May 15th, 2010

    Rob-
The “fact” is that Sestak’s reasons for having no party registration don’t explain his family’s switch, nor his political “roots”.
Also, despite Sestak’s condemnation of military personnel with a party affiliation, I bet he’s tried to locate every active-duty Dem from PA for absentee ballots.
Joe is a phony and a hypocrite.

The simple fact is that the Democratic party has been hijacked by the liberal left. It is simply not the party of years past. The greatest generation gave us perhaps the worst generation as the baby boomers from the sixties seek to destroy this great country. Seeking to protect them from the horror’s that they endured they instead made that generation nothing but a bunch a self serving, angry group who think they are the only ones who matter. They never do any wrong and hold no personal responsibility. It’s all about them and their agenda. We will survive however as we all know that history repeats itself and the boomers die off giving way to those that grew up and admired the principles of Ronald Reagan and the spirit of American that he espoused.

Interesting that folks are bringing up Anita Hill once again. Combine that with Specter’s more recent “Act like a lady” comment, and you have to wonder how ol’ Arlen truly regards women?

    May 15th, 2010

Rendell is a TOTAL POLITICIAN so nothing surprises

  12. David Diano

    May 15th, 2010

    Brent-
I never heard the Specter’s office was hiring women “for their looks, not their opinions”, unlike Sestak’s office. Joe’s good at sweeping things under the rug and handling them behind close doors. Whenever anyone questions his record, he holds up his prior career or his kid’s illness as a shield against criticism. Pathetic.

    Tom-
There’s never been a bigger hijacking than by the extreme right-wing of the GOP. McCain went from Maverick to ventriloquist’s dummy.

    David-

Your the epitome of what I’m talking about. Take your anger of this great country somewhere else. Your one of the ones that will be history soon. See ya later!

    @ Specter must go…
You are completely worng!!!!! Willams was endorsing TOM KNOX for governor and when Tom dropped out Williams felt like no one else was trying to tackle the real issues so he enetered the race for a real change in pa it has 1000000percent nothing to do with helping specter … Williams is a serious canidate has been in publice service fore 20 years … WILLIAMS FOR GOVERNOR 2010.. everyone should do thier research… WILLIAMS4GOVERNOR.COM

  15. Brent Wingard

    May 15th, 2010

David, I didn’t say Sestak was any better. Specter simply has a long public record of examples from which to draw. As for McCain, it’s amazing what a primary challenge will do. In the span of a year-and-a-half, he went from pro-amnesty to “finish the danged fence”. And after years of supporting his pal Joe Lieberman, he suggested that he would no longer support Charlie Crist if he ran as an independent. Lest any Arizona primary voters think the Maverick was not a true Republican.

David uou any military servicwe adn will you release your records?
Have you ever sought or held political office and what are your famailies registration and volting record.
If reelectd will Specter conviniene another Warren comission toinvestigate who put the sestack sticker on your back.
Was it a lone stickerman or was it a magic single sticker.

  17. Rob

    May 16th, 2010

Brent, You are so right about McCain. This is what happens when we let these people grow old in office. They think it is all about themselves. McCain and Specter are two of a kind, which is why Specter strongly campaigned for McCain and Palin, but now pretends that he is a Democrat. It’s all about keeping his job, not about any semblance of good government. These old, career politicans have to go, and the sooner the better.

The ordinary dem voters are really not going for the deal that is being paid for with all the endorsements. Arlen a tough and ruthless politician who has no philosophy or moral compass that guides him.
Sestack is new blood and is “not one of the boys”. Love him or hate him he is going to be a wild card when he wins in November, nit everone will get on board on the 19th.

Pay close attention to the Pa-3 race. Kathy D. voted FOR Health Care and received huge campaign pledges from the DNC for it. She sold out her own people for her own political good, just like Specter. She will vote for Cap and Trade and voted with Nancy Pelosi 94% of the time. My vote?? Vote her out. I will vote for Mr.K, the first Repub I have ever voted for.
