LEFTOVERS: Editorial page endorsements for everyone

With primary day just over a week away, the editorial page endorsements are coming in droves.

The Tribune-Review made its picks for the Senate race, backing Republican Pat Toomey and Democrat Joe Sestak. “Mr. Sestak, a retired Navy admiral, could not be a better messenger for the Democrats’ agenda,” the newspaper wrote. “He’s incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and articulate. And his expertise on matters military is impressive.” The editorial page also said that “Toomey’s conservative credentials are rock solid and he’s a voice of economic sanity so rare in politics today.”

In the gubernatorial primaries, The Tribune-Review backed Republican Tom Corbett and Democrat Jack Wagner. Both were also endorsed by The Inquirer on the other side of Pennsylvania.

Democratic front-runner Dan Onorato, for his part, got the endorsement of The Patriot-News in Harrisburg. “As the Allegheny County executive since 2004,” the newspaper wrote, “Onorato has seen firsthand the difficulties local governments have faced during this recession. He understands what it means for counties when the state is late on a budget.”

And there were some big endorsements in House races, too. The Tribune-Democrat endorsed Democrat Mark Critz for the special election to finish out John Murtha’s term in the 12th Congressional District. “In an era when party politics trumps common sense and cooperation, Critz offers voters a candidate who would work from within to forge relationships and make decisions that positively impact his district and the nation,” the newspaper wrote.

The Tribune-Democrat also had some harsh words for Republican Tim Burns. “We fear Burns is merely a puppet for his party,” it wrote. “Burns’ rhetoric seldom wavers from the GOP national platform, and his knowledge of the local issues and players across the 12th district puts him far behind Critz—who has been working on community projects and with those local individuals for 10 years.”

And insurgent Democratic challenger Corey O’Brien got the hometown paper’s endorsement over incumbent Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-11). The Times Leader called the Lackawanna County Commissioner “a go-getter. … He offers the district’s Democratic voters an option they haven’t seen much lately: fresh ideas and a fresh face.”

When did Toomey decide to get on the economic sanity bandwagon? He’s so far managed to say stuff that goes against economic and fiscal sanity with regard to the current situation of the recession. He’s another jobs killer.

    1) The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is owned by Richard Mellon Scaife.

    2) Scaife funded the Arkansas Project that led to Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial.

    3) Scaife is a long time supporter of the Club for Growth of which Pat Toomey was President.

    4) Scaife has contributed large sums to the Republican National Committee and Rick Santorum’s campaigns.

    5) In 2008, Scaife contributed $35,000 to the Republican Federal Committee of PA.

    6) Scaife contributed $2,100 to Curt Weldon’s 2006 campaign.

    7) In May 2009, Richard Mellon Scaife donated $4,800 to the campaign of Pat Toomey.

    8) In June 2009, Richard Mellon Scaife donated $4,800 to the campaign of Joe Sestak.

Why is one of the most dedicated, hard-core, right-wing, big money contributors of the Republican party making his one and only Democratic contribution to Joe Sestak in the maximum allowed amount?

(because a vote for Sestak is a vote for Toomey)

BTW, Specter just got the Daily News endorsement.

Without a doubt, Scaife wants the Democrats to have a good rumble in the Senate primary. But he’s really lost touch with reality if he thinks that Sestak will be an easier opponent in November than Specter. For reasons already stated, Sestak will run better against Toomey and beat him more handily than would Specter.

I think the better explanation for Scaife’s contribution is that he, like most wingnuts, just out and out hates Arlen Specter and would do anything to see Specter get beat anytime, anywhere and by anyone. Even by Joe Sestak.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette also endorsed Onorato and Corbett.

The Times Leader also endorsed Snyder County Commissioner Malcolm Derk in the PA-10 Republican Primary.

    Bruce-
Scaife can “hate” Specter all he wants, but his goal is to get Toomey in. If he thought Specter was the weaker candidate, Specter would have gotten the money.
The GOP is praying to run against Sestak.

Today’s Inquirer quotes the Philly 8th ward leader that they voted overwhelmingly to endorse Specter as he has the best shot to beat Toomey.

Sestak’s going to end this primary with an empty tank, against a well-funded Toomey.

Economic issues are number one this year, and Toomey clearly has the edge over Sestak in that department. Pat is comfortable discussing fiscal policy as it’s his number one strength, whereas Joe, from the debate performances I’ve seen, seems to lack an understanding of how the economy works. He spouts the standard Dem “anybody with money is evil” and “welfare for everybody” lines. I think Pat will be more likely to rein in entitlement spending (SS, Medicare) and put us on a sustainable path going forward. We can’t keep driving up the debt forever. Eventually, the bond markets will dry up, and we’ll be stuck defaulting on our obligations or printing our way out of it, causing massive inflation and de facto default anyway by issuing worthless paper (making your savings worthless as well). Anyone who voted to add to the problem by passing the health care bill needs a wake-up call. BTW, I’m glad to see in the governor’s race that candidates on both sides are talking about reducing corporate taxation as a means of job growth. That and reforming the state employees’ runaway pension benefits are two of the critical issues facing us at the state level. It will be interesting to see if a Dem gets elected whether they’re willing to take on the unions on this critical issue. So, even though I don’t own a newspaper, here are my endorsements: Pat Toomey for Senate and Sam Rohrer for Governor.

And the the standard Repub lines above about “taking on the unions” and “corporate welfare for all.”

We’ve proved that trickle-down economics is a sham. Let’s stop mouthing platitudes and actually get on with trying solutions that work and create jobs.

This is the same sort of garbage that got Chris Christie elected in Jersey — and now, just four months after taking office, he is despised throughout the state.

Arlen Specter got the endorsement of The Patriot-News today:

Geez, all the Toomey supporters don’t even mention Peg Luksik. You guys call yourselves conservatives?
