LEFTOVERS: Citizen stripping, Tommy Chong in the 4th, DFA for Sestak
The policy subject of the day Thursday was undoubtedly proposed legislation to revoke U.S. citizenship from those with terrorist ties, and a couple Pennsylvania pols were in the mix. Congressmen Jason Altmire (D-4) and Charlie Dent (R-15) joined Senator Joe Liberman (I-Conn.) and others in putting forward the measure, which they had apparently been working on for weeks but felt renewed momentum to push after the failed Times Square car-bombing this week. There was some immediate skepticism about the bill, from both congressional leaders and experts.
“If you’re talking about someone who has taken action—it has to be proven action—against the United States, it would expedite the ability to put them in a military tribunal,” Altmire told The Post-Gazette. Dent, for his part, said during a news conference that “being an American citizen is more than a right, it is a responsibility. When individuals … take actions that are proven threats against this country, they violate that responsibility.”
Meanwhile, Tommy Chong of the infamous drug-comedy duo Cheech & Chong apparently came to Pittsburgh this week to help Democrats raise some money to keep former U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan out of Congress.
The Associated Press reports that Chong came to a fundraiser Wednesday night, and thanked Buchanan “for jump-starting my career again.” Buchanan once brought drug charges against Chong, who pleaded guilty in 2003 and served nine months in prison. Chong also called Buchanan, who is running for the GOP nomination to take on Altmire, “a liar and a thief.” It was unclear if the fundraiser was specifically for Altmire’s campaign or if it was for the local party organization—an Altmire aide did not answer an e-mail seeking clarification. But Buchanan campaign manager Mike Walsh told
The AP that it’s fine with Buchanan if “drug users and convicted felons line up behind Jason Altmire.”
And Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak got some more support from the liberal grassroots Thursday with the endorsement of Democracy for America. DFA members in Pennsylvania had voted to back Sestak by a three-to-one margin in the group’s “Primaries Matter” online poll. “We’re supporting Joe Sestak because he is a progressive Democrat,” DFA chairman Jim Dean said in a statement. “Arlen Specter, on the other hand, switched parties a few months ago in an attempt to keep his seat. That’s why we launched ‘Primaries Matter,’ because it’s not just about electing anyone with the word Democrat next to his name, it’s about electing better Democrats.”
UPDATE: A Democratic source e-mailed pa2010.com to clarify that the fundraiser well held by the local party, not the Altmire campaign.

Buchanan’s chances are going “Up in smoke”. Can you hear them go “bong!”?
