Kelly kicks in another $100K (Updated)

Republican Mike Kelly is going into the homestretch ready to spend more of his own cash.

Kelly, one of two Republican front-runners in the crowded 3rd District primary, loaned his campaign another $100,000 late last week, according to newly-filed campaign finance data.

Paul Huber, Kelly’s chief rival for the nomination to take on Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-3), has loaned his campaign $300,000 over the course of the cycle. And Kelly’s latest loan, first reported by Early Returns 2.0, brings the amount of money Kelly has kicked into his own campaign to $265,000.

Huber has been saturating the airwaves for weeks in the northwest Pennsylvania district, while Kelly went on the air more recently and has focused more heavily on direct mail. The last-minute loan may presage a heavier investment in TV during the closing days of the campaign.

The district is currently ranked No. 3 on the pa2010.com Congressional Power Rankings.

UPDATE: Kelly later loaned his campaign yet another $50,000, according to campaign finance data, bringing his total loans to an amount greater than Huber’s.

Someone is coming up with a light checkbook come May 19. Should be both of them. There happens to be **SIX** Candidates. Everyone in the 3rd District should do their proper homework. Enough of the big money egotistical lies!

While there are, indeed, six candidates, there really are only two that have a legitimate chance of winning the primary – Kelly and Huber. Personally, I was a fan of Dr. Moore until I met Kelly. I must say that I was extremely impressed. I believe that his boisterous manner and “larger than life” persona will work very well in the effort to get rid of Dahlkemper. The most important thing is that he is very Conservative.

    Chad-

Only “old school” analysis says that only two have a chance to win. The candidates that energize the base are the ones that win in modern politics. Kelly and Huber have spent $600K throwing mud at each other, turning off a huge portion of PA-3.

We need someone who can stay true to core beliefs. Kelly just did a TV interview in Erie that touted his moderate platform. That’s not very conservative. He also raised taxes while on Butler city council. That’s not very conservative. Kelly also donated $1K to a Democrat to oust Daryl Metcalfe, the most conservative guy in Harrisburg. That’s not very conservative.

Kelly = English, Corbett, Ridge, etc. No wonder the party loves him so much.

    Huber = Specter

You’re much better off with one of the other four candidates if you’re looking for a conservative.

I’d tell you to vote for Grabb, but I’m biased that way. Do your research and make a good choice.

In response to false and misleading allegations, please see the following press release from Mike Kelly’s website:
“During my first Council meeting, January 22, 2006, all members of the Council voted to change the Emergency Services fee from $31.00 a year to $52.00 a year; a mere $21.00 to help improve public safety and to ensure that our firefighters, police officers and emergency responders were equipped with the tools necessary to serve our local community as the previous administration left a shortfall in funds for our brave men and women serving our community. Public safety has always been my main concern and a service that all city residents need and expect,” stated Mike Kelly.

Mike Kelly continued, “As a firm believer in personal responsibility, I have also donated a police car when the police department was in need of one, and also donated an SUV to the K-9 unit, as well as a Monte Carlo for the local D.A.R.E. program. These were all ways that I could help in anyway I could in ensuring the citizens of our community were having the best service and protection possible.”

So, raising taxes 65% means increasing taxes for municipal servies, which are essential, from $31 to $52, so those employees can do their jobs and on top of that giving them for free three cars, and why? Because maybe he cares that these people get paid, that residents have critical services, and that the transportation they vitally need is provided. What other candidate has come even close to do anything like that ever?

Anonymous – thanks for the clarification on the tax issue. Huber’s ad is clearly misleading.

As far as other candidates coming close to doing that – well, no other candidate has been in the position to hike fees. No other candidate is a millionaire who owns a car dealership and could write off donating a vehicle.

It is misleading to infer that other candidates don’t care about first responders. Clayton Grabb is the only one to serve in the military, but you won’t find his supporters inferring that the other candidates don’t care about the troops.

It doesn’t clear up the many other issues I have with Kelly, though.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. There will always be reasons to vote for/against someone.

I didn’t say the other candidates didn’t care. I said as a statement of fact that no one has done what Mike Kelly has done for the community. What difference does it make if you’re a millionaire or not. Many millionaires don’t do anything. A tax write-off, by the way, is a drop in the bucket, relative to the cost of literally giving a car away. I’m sure you know this from having paid taxes. The act of generosity is in no way dimished by the penny’s on the dollar one may get back from a tax write-off.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have candidates that are not poor by any means and never contributed a dime to any first responders, let alone any conservative candidates in past races, or any conservative causes ever (and they could have but chose not to). And yet, you choose to single out contributions Mike Kelly made, which pale in comparison to his giving to conservative candidates and causes.
What conservative candidates and causes have the candidate(s) that you support given to? It’s a fair question given your emphasis on this point. It’s also fair to say that you are an instigator of class warfare, which is anything but conservative…as if there is something wrong with making money and using it to help out causes and ideals you believe in. If anything, we should thank millionaires who do that instead of amassing wealth for themselves alone. If your candidate was independently wealthy he would surely self-fund more of his campaign. Is he not already doing so to the extent that he can? So it is really not a matter of principle but of scale… And the frustration coming from you is in the ability to scale to meet the challenge.
And if you are a Grabb supporter, and he is trying to stay above the fray, then why are you going negative and acting contrary to his stated goal of staying positive?
