Fierce farm fight in the 3rd
MEADVILLE—During a debate between the six Republican candidates in the 3rd Congressional District last month, there was an exchange between front-runners Paul Huber and Mike Kelly that went largely unnoticed.
“Unlike Paul, I grew up on a farm,” Kelly said during the debate at Allegheny College here.
Huber let it pass—but not for long. In separate interviews with pa2010.com the next day, they were trading barbs over just who is really the candidate of the working farmer. The back-and-forth underscores the importance of courting farm-economy workers in the northwest Pennsylvania district, where agriculture is a major industry.
Tea Party activist Clayton Grabb, physician Martha Moore, insurance agent Steven Fisher and factory worker Ed Franz are also running for the party’s nod to take on Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper. But Huber and Kelly are widely seen as the favorites because each as put about $300,000 into their respective campaigns and is flooding the airwaves in an increasingly contentious TV war.
In reality, both of them grew up on farms—just different kinds of farms. But that didn’t stop each of them from taking shots at their opponent’s farming bona fides.
In Erie, Huber made sure a reporter understand that his reference at the debate to an “82-pound cow” indicated how much milk it produces, not how much it weights.
“I would wager that most of [my opponents] wouldn’t know what that remark was about unless you explained it to them,” Huber said in Erie. “I can speak the language of this district.
“Not having a farming background makes it tough to understand these issues,” Huber added. “I will bet you a dollar to the doughnut that Mike Kelly has never milked a cow.”
Asked if he has, Huber quickly responded, “You’re damn right. More than once.”
Later, while waiting for a campaign event to start in Parker, Kelly joked that Huber “can keep his dollar.”
“We didn’t have dairy cattle,” Kelly said. “We had beef cattle. You don’t want to milk them. He can keep the money, I don’t want him to milk the bull.
“I’m not as stupid as he thinks,” Kelly added. “I’ll bet dollars to the doughnut that only one of us will come out if we go behind the barn. He likes people to believe that he’s a little farm boy, and he’s not a little farm boy.”

Farmers in the 3rd that note this exchange will draw different conclusion than town folk will.
Neither dairy farmers nor beef farmers are likely to keep bulls around; they’re pretty dangerous and AI gives you better genetics. Both dairy and beef cows come fresh when they give birth. If you don’t want to drink the milk from beef cows, it’s because the cattle have been pumped full of dangerous chemicals; in that case, you don’t want to eat the meat, either.
Of course, if you’re just fattening up calves, town folks might call that a farm, but farmers generally call it a feedlot, instead. That’s not to say that that they look down on feedlot operators – they are neighbors, after all, and many of them work hard.
But they look down on politicians caught in a lie.

One thing is for sure in this race: farmers or not, Huber and Kelly are easily outdistancing the rest of this weak GOP field.
It’s interesting to note that the two most moderate candidates, lifelong Democrat-until-last-year Huber and auto industry bailout recipient Kelly, are the frontrunners in this race.
Social conservative Clayton Grabb has raised little money, by comparison, and his campaign has no traction at this point. Grabb recently told an Erie TV stations that he wanted to see a “return to Christian roots,” but the tea party candidate doesn’t seem to have much in the way of actual public policy ideas.
The other 3rd district candidates have been nearly invisible.
Expect Kelly to beat Huber by 5 points on Tuesday, with Grabb finishing 20-25 points back in last place and the other candidates Fisher, Franz, and Dr. Moore to land somewhere in between the winner Kelly and the last-place Grabb.

To correct Jason’s blantant falsities and distortions… the bailout money Jason is refering to is not profit to Kelly. He did not receive hundreds of thousandds from the government, he paid that money to consumers…repeat, this is not money that went into his own pocket.
It is a reimbursement from the government to him for funds he disbursed to consumers when they traded in their cash for clunkers. In fact, he paid customers upon trade-in, and then waited for many months (without interest) until the government finally reimbursed him for paying its subsidy to consumers.
His profit came with the individual sale of the vehicle, and not from the cash-for-clunkers program.
It’s an important distinction, because what the government really did in this instance was change the market from a free market to a subsidized market for consumers. Dealers were no longer operating in a market with a level playing field. Dealers had no choice but to participate because consumers would go to other dealers who would pay them the cash-for-clunkers subsidy, and if that happened the dealer’s sales staff would suffer tremendous losses (because salespeople work primarily on commission).
Hence, the entire market equilibrium was upset by this government intervention. It is completely wrong, factually incorrect, to say that Kelly or others received money from cash-for-clunkers, because that money was a reimbursement, NOT A PAYMENT TO THEM PERSONALLY. This is a falsity and Jason should know better as an MBA and self-proclaimed tax expert.

I think both of these guys know about cows, and Huber is a serious guy with a working farm. He is also a lifelong Democrat. Kelly is a longstanding community leader who has proven his Republican and conservative credentials. When I hear a few voices trying to label Kelly a liberal, it reminds me of the folks who argued Reagan was squishy when he was Governor of California. Kelly has the stature to beat Dahlkemper, then fight Pelosi in Washington.

I don’t care about labels, but apparently Kelly doesn’t label himself a conservative, since during his interview on WJET TV he referred to his “moderate platform.”
I don’t care that Huber just recently joined the Republican party. I bet it won’t matter to the independents voting in the general election either. Being a conservative is more important than being called a Republican or a Democrat – since both parties are equally disliked.
How about for a change we forget labels and pick a candidate that best reflects our priorities?

I find it amazing that these two men argue over the most mundane and meaningless issues in the midst of a crucial election. What next? Who can drink who under the table?
I am giving attention to the other four candidates at this point. After reading Jason’s comments, he has clued me in to focusing on Mr.Grabb. Because I think that when someone shows a clear bias against a candidate like that it means that the candidate must have some qualities or positions that are a game changer. Going to the website now.

Who can sling the cow chips the farthest?
I agree Heather, my friends and I here in Crawford were discussing these guys over lunch and we took a quick poll throughout the plant and it wasn’t even close.
The guy Grabb from Butler looks more like one of us. No BS, just wants what’s right for the country.

Grabb says, kick out all the bums. Blah blah blah, I’m great, everybody else stinks, vote them out, blah blah blah. That’s all he says. No ideas, no policy, no nothing.
Sure, I’m for kicking out the bums but he doesn’t put anything on the table then boiler pot anti incumbant talk. And talks cheap.

“How about for a change we forget labels and pick a candidate that best reflects our priorities?” (quote from Dee above)
Funny Dee. Seems to me as if the “moderate platform” you were referring to is also a label. Ironic.
The truth is Kelly is a LIFELONG conservative – and even if you want someone to go between the aisle (which I do for real progress in D.C.) – I don’t want my winner SITTING on the OTHER side of the aisle. Huber was a LIFELONG dem. Habits are changed in 21 days, not voting records.

In response to Scott’s blatant falsities and distortions, here’s the real deal about Mike Kelly and taxes:
“During my first Council meeting, January 22, 2006, all members of the Council voted to change the Emergency Services fee from $31.00 a year to $52.00 a year; a mere $21.00 to help improve public safety and to ensure that our firefighters, police officers and emergency responders were equipped with the tools necessary to serve our local community as the previous administration left a shortfall in funds for our brave men and women serving our community. Public safety has always been my main concern and a service that all city residents need and expect,” stated Mike Kelly.
Mike Kelly continued, “As a firm believer in personal responsibility, I have also donated a police car when the police department was in need of one, and also donated an SUV to the K-9 unit, as well as a Monte Carlo for the local D.A.R.E. program. These were all ways that I could help in anyway I could in ensuring the citizens of our community were having the best service and protection possible.”

After further deliberation, I have decided to shift my vote to Ed Fisher. Fisher being a doctor would have a better handle on health care issues, since he deals with it every day up at GE.
Clayton Moore will still finish dead last.
Yep, it’s Kelly to win, behind Fisher of course.
I’m sticking to it, for sure. Really now I am. I swear.

It just hit me. I meant Huber. Yep Huber!
Now I remember why.
Huber has sold more cars in the district than any other candidate. I actual remember buying my first car at his farm.
God I feel so embarrassed now.

Anyone who thinks that the Tea Party and Clayton Grabb are the answer in this district should take the time to read my letter, below:
Recently, PA-3 congressional candidate Clayton Grabb told an Erie TV station that he would “wear the badge” of the tea party. In the crowded, six-person GOP primary field, Grabb stands out as the most idealogical, a solid social conservative among his more moderate peers. But will Grabb’s campaign actually be the tea party’s downfall here?
Grabb has certainly grabbed voters’ attention. On his Facebook page, he wrote that emergency rooms should take “cash, credit, or debit card.” He told Erie’s WJET-TV that as a legislator he would return the county to its “Christian roots,” and “cut Obama off at the knees.”
As the WJET-TV interview with Grabb pointed out, however, he lags badly in fundraising. With about a week to go before the primary, Grabb had a little over $30,000 in campaign funds. $20,000 of that was his own money.
PA-3 is a moderate-leaning district, where you generally have to be pro-gun and anti-abortion or you can forget running for office. Despite the attempts by her critics to paint her as left-wing, current congressional representative Kathy Dahlkemper has largely been a moderate legislator. She was recently named the 8th most centrist member of the House of Representatives by the non-partisan National Journal.
Which brings us back to Grabb. He has raised less than a tenth of the money of opponents like Mike Kelly and Paul Huber (both of whom admittedly also lent considerable sums to their own campaigns). If Grabb is wearing the “tea party badge,” where are all the contributions from tea party coffers? If the movement is so strong in PA-3, where are the tea partiers–free market capitalists and their supporters, all– and their wallets when their candidate Grabb needs the cash?
Grabb’s campaign may be a referendum on the tea party movement, both here in PA-3 and in Western Pennsylvania. The Butler-area pharmaceutical salesman told WJET that his campaign funding wasn’t a big concern: “It’s the message, not the money,” Grabb said.
But what if the message isn’t getting through? Political philosophies don’t win elections here; pragmatic public policy espousals do.
A 20 point-plus loss by Grabb in the primary could mean that the most conservative candidate in PA-3 not only has little financial support, but that his ideas may simply be too right-wing for voters in Western PA– surprisingly, including the tea party itself.

Nice theory but I think your opinions come more from your own personal vendetta against the county GOP than from any significant understanding of the tea party movement.

To Jason:
I just read Mr. Grabb’s blog about health care, and I interpreted that last line to refer to ‘deadbeats’. Sort of like: ‘those individuals who create personal situations in which governments are not meant to resolve.’
Enforced charity is not a governmental function my friend, but maybe personal responsibility should be.

If you want this pelosi support Klown Kathy continuing to ruin Pa, let Grabb and Huber split the repub vote. But if you really care about this country, about defeating socialism and lowering taxes, I urge all candidates to come together and pledge their support to Mike Kelly. Don’t let this obuma Storm Trooper Klown Kathey get her way!! She was paid by the DNC and Pelosi for her Health Care Vote. She will vote for Cap and Trade. She aleady has voted for banking reform, hell she votes with Pelosi 94% of the time. She is a puppet for this administration. Break the cycle, incite real change in DC, get behind Mike Kelly.
