Casey heading out west

Casey heading out west

Senator Bob Casey is making a two-day campaign swing in western Pennsylvania for the Democratic Party’s two top priorities on May 18: fellow Senator Arlen Specter and 12 District special election nominee Mark Critz.

Casey will appear at a campaign rally with Specter Sunday night in Pitcairn, in Allegheny County. He also cut a radio ad for the Republican-turned-Democrat, in one of Casey’s most direct assists to Specter. The 60-second spot is geared toward Cambria County. “I’m Senator Bob Casey,” he says in the ad, “and I’m proud to endorse Arlen Specter, because he doesn’t just work for Cambria County.”

On Monday, Casey will roll through Washington, Pa. with Critz the day before his special election showdown with Republican Tim Burns.

Casey is one of the popular Dems in the State. He’s arguably more conservative than Specter on some issues. He won by capturing the middle. So can Specter.

Ridicously symbolic. Senator Specter enjoys the support of The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Patriot-News, Governor Rendell, Senator Casey, every member of the Commonwealth’s Democratic congressional delegation, every major labor union, etc. Sestak is persona non grata – a pariah within the Democratic Party who does not command the support of any key Democratic constituency, any news organization, or any prominent public figure. His lack of endorsements and abysmal fundraising reflect this. Those who have contemplated casting their ballots for Sestak should ponder this question: how could a candidate who is a pariah in his own party possibly rally and mobilize that party in the aftermath of the primary?! Answer: he could not. Sestak’s pariah status would all but ensure his defeat against Toomey. Sestak simply would not be able to marshal and muster the support necessary from Democrats.

I imagine this will firm up the support of the various WPA constituencies. I can’t imagine what kind of support Sestak has out there from his “listening tour,” where the Democrats of Pennsylvania “asked him to run” (his words from his Daily Times interview).

This will seal it – Rendell in Philadelphia, Casey in Pittsburgh, and goodbye Joe.

Hmm… somewhat reminiscent of how Santorum came out right before the 2004 primary and said he stood by Arlen Specter so that ol’ Arlen could squeak out a win. So, let’s see, both candidates from the past Senate election (Santorum & Casey) and the past two U.S. Presidents (Bush & Obama) have all heartily endorsed Arlen Specter. And we all know how similar their philosophies are. No wonder he keeps thanking the “Allegheny County Republicans…I mean, Democrats”. He’s managed to confuse even himself at this point.

Wingard: What is paramount is that no office-holder of any consequence in the Commonwealth of PA has endorsed Representative Sestak, no major newspaper in the Commonwealth of PA has endorsed Sestak, and no key interest groups in the Commonwealth of PA have endorsed Sestak. Senator Specter has demonstrated an uncanny ability to command support among diverse constituencies; Sestak, by contrast, is a pariah within the Democratic Party (and would remain a pariah even if he were to prevail on primary day). Can someone who is persona non grata within his own political party, like Sestak, muster enough support to defeat Toomey? It is highly unlikely. The head of the PA Democratic Party recently suggested that a Sestak victory would be “cataclysmic.” Do you really believe that Sestak would be able to mobilize support among key Democrats in light of this?

Casey did not have to run a competitive primary…not sure he could hav survived that…remember rendell in 2002? Makes me sick that Casey would back this guy after this guy campaigned against Bobby’s father and Bobby….thought bobby had moer character than that…Specter is such a waste of Bobby’s time

I couldn’t stand Casey’s Dad with his extreme views and really nasty campaigning.
Casey Jr. is a real improvement. Even though I don’t agree with him on all the issues, he’s a decent guy.

    Wingard (windbag)
The party almost always supports the incumbent. You act like it’s some shock. It was always pretty obvious that Specter thought Bush, Santorum and most of the GOP were douche-bags (and they felt the same way back). However, the party leaders pick the candidate they think can win. Whom they prefer is often a secondary concern.

Specter has beaten Toomey before, even in the rarefied air of the GOP where moderates have difficulty. Toomey can’t play the “polarizing” card on Specter and paint him as a left-wing liberal. But, Specter can occupy the middle and expose Toomey as on the Right. Sestak can’t do that.

Specter’s weakness, requiring that people again pull him across the finish line, bodes poorly for him in November if he wins. I still think he loses, because voters are smarter than to fall for these endorsements, remembering the endorsements he had six years ago. A phony is a phony, and Specter has demonstrated that there is nothing genuine about him except his desire to maintain personal power without any principles.

Jim F: Your lexicon is quite limited. Might I suggest further edification and refinement? Run along now…and purchase a dictionary so you can grasp what I am saying.

Rob: So primary voters should cast their ballots for Sestak, a pariah who does not enjoy the support of any major newspaper, any notable public officials, any critical interest groups, or any key demographic? Your reasoning is faulty. How can a candidate who is persona non grata within his own political party defeat Pat Toomey? These endorsements you so casually dismiss are vitally important to victory in the general election. Sestak simply would not be able to muster enough support to prevail. His abysmal fundraising in recent months demonstrates this. And without the support of the various actors mentioned earlier, additional fundraising becomes a virtual impossibility. Sestak will emerge from this primary with only a fraction of Toomey’s resources, with no backing from any of the significant players in the Democratic Party. Sounds like a recipe for disaster from the standpoint of any rational observer.

Go Joe: Sestak also enjoys the support of Eric Massa (ex-congressman who fondled the genitals of innocent males both in the Navy and in Wsahington, D.C.) and Barney Frank (who was lambasted by the House Ethics Committee after it was discovered that his male lover was operating a prostitution ring in the apartment they shared). Didn’t remember that? Don’t fret – if Sestak is the Dem nominee, Pat Toomey will repeatedly remind you!!

According to Politico, Representative Sestak is uncertain whether he would endorse Senator Specter should Specter prevail. Loyal, steadfast Democrat, old Joe.

    HateSestak,
You really are out of it. After Sestak wins this primary, the entire Democratic establishment will rally around him as the party’s nominee against Toomey. That includes the President, Senator Casey, Governor Rendell, etc. They aren’t going to endorse Toomey. This is what happens after a primary election. Duh!
