Buchanan sounds a confident note against Rothfus
PITTSBURGH—Mary Beth Buchanan looked confident from behind the podium. She smiled at the small group of supporters gathered outside the Allegheny County Building here Friday, and began a speech in which she laced into her Republican primary opponent in the 4th District.
“I don’t think this is a close election,” Buchanan, a former U.S. Attorney, said later. “If you go out in the district, you’ll see that many people have no idea why Keith Rothfus is running for Congress. His whole platform is negative, and voters are tired of that.”
Whether she’s right will be decided Tuesday, when Republicans vote on whether she or Rothfus will go up against Congressman Jason Altmire (D-4) in the fall. And her confident disposition came in spite of the face that Rothfus has, over the last few weeks, deftly kept her on the defensive. Even Buchanan’s attempt to strike back Friday quickly ran into trouble—she said Rothfus was a Democrat from 1990-2003, but county voting records didn’t substantiate the charge and Rothfus denied it.
Answering questions about the state of the campaign, Buchanan said the fact that her first campaign manager stepped aside wouldn’t dent her chances of winning, and she played down the perception that Rothfus has made a close race out of what some had thought would be a breeze for Buchanan.
“We’re not really concerned about it,” Buchanan said. “I’ve actually done things in this area that the public wants, like cracking down on crime and cutting government spending. Voters actually know my name and what I stand for.”
She said her experiences campaigning in the western Pennsylvania have proved how little voters know about Rothfus.
“Compared to my opponent, we have run a clean and positive campaign,” Buchanan said. “That is what the voters expect. They are sick of negative politics, politics as usual.”

Really? She thinks voters are sick of negative politics one day after she called a grandstanding press conference to make an attack on her opponent? One that turned out to be unsubstantiated, for that matter. Smell the hypocrisy. BTW, shame on her for prosecuting Chong. He’s a comedy legend, and whom exactly was he hurting? Nobody. I don’t live in that district, but I’d rather not see her representing anything. BTW, Rothfus’ commercial where he played her “Shut up and let me talk” clip over and over again was pretty funny. I don’t know which is funnier, that or the Arlen Specter “re-elected” commercial.

The biggest difference I see between the two candidates is integrity- Mr. Rothfus has shown it over and over by always stating straight facts; his opponent DID donate money to Specter (I checked the FEC report myself- it’s under “Mary Buchanan,” not her full name) and she DID originally support the bail-outs (I read the newspaper article myself). Mrs. Buchanan labels these facts as “negative,” yet I dare say they are very pertinent. This is factual information that speaks to her values, and as an informed voter, I for one am glad to know this before the election.
When making a statement, Mrs. Buchanan and her campaign have a tendency to lead voters on an “Alice in Wonderland” type journey in search of something verifiable. The ever-increasing pattern of questionable claims and actions leave me wondering about…….well just wondering, really. From her “Keith should just stay home and raise his kids” proclamation to the cease and desist letter she received from the NRA, I have to legitimately question her judgment. Are we really to believe that a lawyer of her experience does not know the law pertaining to copyrights? I’m a stay-at-home mom and I know better!
Now we are to believe her claim that Mr. Rothfus has been a registered Democrat for over a decade? I’m too smart to fall for last minute “landmines” unearthed by inadequate research and inaccurate postcards. I bet most of you are also.

So Buchanan states people are tired of negative campaigning when she is holding a press conference attacking her opponent. Hypocrisy anyone???
As for no one knowing Rothfus, he received both the Pittsburgh Press and Post Gazette endorsements over Buchanan. So is Buchanan really arguing that these papers would pick a political unknown over her. If that is the case, it demonstrates the viewpoint of Buchanan’s lack of skills by these editorial boards.
I hope our area picks anyone other than Mary Beth Buchanan on Tuesday’s primary. I am tired of the freak show campaign that she is running and am just unnerved by the idea of her being our congress representative.
Seriously, just imagine what the press conferences will be like for Congress Representative Buchanan. Don’t we all have enough unproductive glory seekers in congress already???

Mary Beth Buchanan, if elected, would be the Michele Bachman of PA (i.e., a laughing stock). Is that what we want?

The real problem is figuring out how much of this is making an impact on the average Republican primary voter. The folks on this blog are well-informed, but probably not your typical Republican primary voter in this district. I am not a Republican primary voter in this district, even though I have an interest in this race.
Will be interesting to see the result of the election. If Buchanan and Specter win their respective nominations, we will know that one should not overestimate the intelligence of the average primary voter in either party.

Buchanan is as likely to be elected as my hamster, and is too dumb to realize that she was put into this race by Altmire.

Buchanan always seemed to me to the be third coming of Melissa Hart. She is such a joke that the Democrats had a fundraiser with Tommy Chong and Cyril Wecht a couple weeks ago.
That said, she will probably win.
