Toomey aims to bank on Specter’s party switch
Pat Toomey’s decision to run for Senate helped prompt five-term incumbent Senator Arlen Specter’s party switch.
A year later, Toomey wants to bolster his coffers courtesy of Specter’s decision to not let Pennsylvania Republican primary voters have the final say on his 30-year Senate career. The former Wall Street banker, restaurant owner, congressman and conservative think tank leader unveiled a new Web site fundraising gimmick that seeks to cash in for $280,000—a “money bomb,” as they like to call it—leading up the one-year anniversary of Specter’s defection to the Democrats.
Specter’s mug and story are the main selling points of this drive, but don’t expect him to get a cut of the action.
“Specter’s switch isn’t about party politics but about what it means for hardworking citizens all across Pennsylvania and the country,” Toomey spokeswoman Nachama Soloveichik said. “Arlen Specter chose political opportunism over the country’s ordinary taxpayers. Now, those same taxpayers can tell Specter exactly what they think of his choice.”

Ever see a Toomey fundraising envelope? It says “Help me defeat Arlen Specter” in huge type on the front.

Which goes to show everyone that Toomey doesn’t have any of his own record or ideas to run on except against Specter.
Really, Specter didn’t leave the GOP last year. The GOP left the many moderates that were a section of their ranks in the state by talking in an unending radical rhetoric of the far right. The party still has a lot of fractures, made more apparent with the tea sippers and their kookiness.

Hmmm….
Running on a platform of “I’m not Specter”, “Help me defeat Specter” and “Specter isn’t trustworthy”
“No ideas of my own”
Where have I heard that before?
Oh…right.. the Sestak campaign.
I guess that’s why he and Toomey get along so well.

I am gladly supporting the True Democrat, Congressman Joe Sestak for the United States Senate.

George, I think you and I are voices in the wilderness these days.
According to our party leaders, it’s perfectly OK to work against the Democratic Party for 30 years, to push through inept and ultra-conservative judges, to rubber-stamp the destructive policies of George Bush and Dick Cheney – all of that is just fine and all is forgiven and we should totally trust you if you just step across the aisle and start telling folks you’re a Democrat.
To our party leaders, “being a Democrat” is pretty meaningless, and you don’t really need any core beliefs or ideals. Just change your registration and you’re golden.
Well, I disagree. I heartily welcome Arlen Specter into our party, I’m glad he switched. But that doesn’t mean that I trust him or that I now want him as a Democratic Senator.

Ed, it is debateable as to whether our senior senator ever was in the GOP. I can think of far more principled moderates to hang your hat on who *might* have a claim to being left behind. Senator Specter switched parties for personal expediency. He knows no ideology other than personal political survival. Should he somehow win re-election (and polls indicate that is an uphill battle), the Deomcrats will learn just how selfish and unprincipled he is.

Bruce-
I guess it’s also okay with you for a guy to spend 30 years voting Republican while registered Independent, then see which way the wind is blowing before jumping onto the Dems. Sestak changed his registration to Dem, so why is he “golden”.
Once he was in office, he rubber-stamps Bush’s Iraq War funding (without timetables or accountability). Rubber-stamps funding Cheney’s office. Rubber-stamps warrantless wiretaps. Rubber-stamps Telecom immunity.
So, what are Sestak’s “core beliefs”?? Paying his staff below minimum wage? Nepotism for his siblings at above-average wages? Refusing to help local Democrats get elected? Voting against States having their own single-payer health care? Abusing his staff?

Toomey doesn’t have his own ideas? Are you serious? The guy wrote an entire book detailing his plans to get America back on track economically and in culture. Take a weekend to read the book and you can see plainly that Specter is the guy who’s out of ideas.
Here’s a link to Toomey’s “non-existent” ideas:

EBW-
I’m sorry. Allow me to clarify:
Doesn’t have “viable” or “realistic” or “non-discredited” ideas of his own.
However, I was technically correct in that Toomey’s ideas aren’t his own anyway. They are re-treads of failed ideas and policies that the extreme right-wing has been promoting for years.
Toomey’s book should be properly titled: “The Road to Complete Economic Collapse”

Supply side econmics, Pat Toomey’s retread idea, is good for two things: unsustainable budget deficits and America’s wealthiest 10%.

Toomey is a strong conservative voice for Pennsylvania. He is morally sound and objects to
the present Senator’s turncoat attitudes. We need Toomey’s strong vote for our rights as a Commonwealth and as individuals.
