Sestak rallies volunteers for the final push

Sestak rallies volunteers for the final push

PITTSBURGH—Trailing in the polls with just 30 days to go before his showdown with Arlen Specter, Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) on Sunday rallied volunteers for his campaign throughout the state, looking to kickoff the final push toward primary day on a positive note.

Sestak addressed supporters at his campaign office here, in a speech that the campaign said was broadcast to volunteers at offices in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Doylestown, State College, Elkins Park and his home base in Media.

His speech  seemed to underscore the reality that Sestak is going to need a serious push from his supporters if he hopes to come out on top in the Democratic Senate primary. He faces a deficit both in fundraising and in the polls, and has yet to go on the air with TV ads.

Sestak said that volunteer outreach will play a major role in overcoming this issues.

“The working families of Pennsylvania want a Senator that they can believe in,” Sestak said, several times mentioning Specter’s party switch last year. “Pennsylvanians need to know that they will always be clear about where I stand on an issue, but we can’t spread that message without our volunteers’ support.”

During the event, supporters from across the state chimed in with questions about Sestak’s stance on President Obama’s economic policies, energy legislation, abortion and his willingness to go against the Democratic establishment.

“If I approach this Senate seat with the same enthusiasm my volunteers have shown, you’re all going to get tired of seeing me as your Senator,” Sestak said to about 50 volunteers and staffers here after the speech. “I can’t thank you enough for your help this far, and I’m sure you’ll be able to win me that seat.”

“you’re all going to get tired of seeing me as your Senator”

Well, I’m already tired of Sestak as my Congressman.

“Pennsylvanians need to know that they will always be clear about where I stand on an issue,”

Really? Like when you campaigned in 2006 for opposing Bush on Iraq, then rolled over and voted for Iraq funding without Timetables?

Why would his supporters need to “chime in with questions”?? If they are his volunteers and supporters, they would already be aware of his positions. Sounds like planted questions and more Sestak phoniness.

“The working families of Pennsylvania want a Senator that they can believe in,”

I guess no one asked Sestak about his refusal to pay members of his staff minimum wage. So much for supporting workers.

30 more days of this blowhard.

A youthful, inspiring leader vs. an 80-year-old man who’s been on the verge of death several times already and, according to medical odds, will be again soon.

    A Democrat vs. a 30-year Republican.

A man who endorsed Barack Obama and worked for his election vs. a man who enthusiastically endorsed Ronald Reagan, George H.W.Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain and Sarah Palin.

This is the choice…in a Democratic primary.

There is only once choice for Democrats, and it’s Joe Sestak.

Bailey: Its April 19, 2010. Less than one month remains. Why hasn’t your “inspiring leader” launched any campaign advertisements? If he is supremely confident of victory, he would almost certainly be prepared to invest his $5 million in such an undertaking. But apparently he is not. If Sestak lacks confidence in this endeavor, why should the general public have any confidence in it?

Time to deal with empirical reality, Bailey. Your “inspiring leader” is an unprincipled charlatan – a con man who has solicited funds from unsuspecting citizens on false pretenses.

Good news in Northumberland Co. too. They choose not to endorse, both Joe and Specter will appear on the sample ballot, and guess who is in the top ballot position in this Senate race, Joe Sestak. Dave I’ll trade you a dozen endorsements that will be forgotten on election day for the top ballot spot.

    Bruce-

Playing the “he’s going to die” card is pretty weak and is just more fear-mongering from the Sestak camp.

BTW, it’s a Fake Democrat vs a Former Republican.

Sestak endorsed Hillary and was part of her press conference in March 2008 when she claimed that she and McCain were ready to lead as Commander in Chief, but Obama wasn’t. Sestak provided himself as a military prop to support her claim.

Don’t be so sure that Sestak didn’t support Ronald Reagan. Also, I suspect that Sestak voted for Specter in the past as well. Hook Sestak up to a lie detector and ask who he’s voted for.

Hater, why the hurry on TV ads? Just because Arlen panicked after the last polls came out is no reason for the Sestak campaign to alter their plan. Besides how long do you think it will take to bury Arlen under his long record of dupliciouness? Let’s not forget all of his well recorded votes for the policies of Reagan,Bush, and Shrub. His political corpse already reeks and you still don’t smell it.

    Apr 19th, 2010

Bailey: Incidentally, you are the only individual who has ever characterized the increasingly melancholy Sestak (who is approaching 60 years of age) as “youthful.” If anything, Sestak is looking more haggard, pallid and wearied than ever before. Being a GOP hack takes its toll over time. Yes, Bailey – a GOP hack. Only a GOP hack would continue to wage a fruitless campaign against the Democratic front-runner with only a handful of weeks remaining. And again, if Sestak harbors a belief that he can triumph, why has he failed to invest his $5 million in an advertising effort? Indeed, a legitimate candidate would invest ALL of his resources in such an advertising effort. Watcha think, Bailey? Is Sestak prepared to invest ALL of his $5 million at this juncture? If not, then why should any rational voter support him? If he is not a GOP hack, then why has he failed to invest ALL of his resources in an advertsising blitz?

Healy: Hello there. As Mr. Diano has deduced/suggested, I am something of a noted authority on political matters (though Mr. Diano has no idea as to my actual identity). I can assure you – contrary to what pundits and would-be journalists continually claim, it is far too late for campaign advertisements to have any impact. And I say that from a purely objective standpoint. Specter commands almost twice as much camapign cash as Sestak. This would enable Specter to counter every ad Sestak airs. Every single ad. Specter would effectively negate any Sestak ad. A Sestak ad campaign would, therefore, be an exercise in futility.

I would advise you to discount the poppycock being disseminated by journalists and pundits. Ever notice how social scientists, political scientists, etc., are conspicuously absent from the airwaves and newspapers? They are the GENUINE authorities on domestic political races. And you will be hard pressed to find more than a handful of legitimate social scientists or political scientists who believe that Sestak can prevail.

The larger question is readily apparent: if Sestak is not prepared to invest all of his $5 million in an effort to achieve victory, then why does he continue to wage a campaign? What arcane motives does the soon to be ex-congressman have?

    GOP Hack, That’s Joe Sestak.

    Apr 19th, 2010

I think you are a legend in your own mind. I have yet to see any real political thought or insight in any of your irrelevant rants. What makes you think that future Senator Sestak, won’t be spending his 5 Million on state-wide ads? If your so brilliant, why can’t you get tenure?

  12. David Diano

    Apr 19th, 2010

    Bill-
I don’t think Specter running a small ad buy with only a month to go is “panic”. Specter’s running positive ads, which can also help his fundraising.

It’s actually the smart move, because he can set a tone for the race, and make Sestak look bad by going negative. Because, Sestak is going heavily negative. He has no substantial record to run on. Running on “not being Arlen” is not going to get him far.

Specter, on the other hand, can have ad rattling off projects he’s brought to every part of the state. Accomplishments that people actually have heard of.

HEY SPECTER CAMPAIGN: Find clips of Sestak from last spring/summer pretending he was running “FOR” something, rather than “AGAINST” something. Then you can intersperse that with Sestak’s negative advertising.

  13. bill healy

    Apr 19th, 2010

unfortunatly for Arlen he does have a record, don’t know that I would characterize it as being substantial, but I do know it contains few positives for him to spin. How long do you think he can ignore his thirty year record of voting with the right wing of the Republican party?

  14. David Diano

    Apr 19th, 2010

    Bill-
Arlen got elected by the majority of Pennsylvanians time and time again. He’s more representative of the PA electorate than either Sestak or Toomey, which gives him the best chance of winning.

A voter for Joe in May is the same as a vote for Toomey in November.

  15. HateSestak

    Apr 19th, 2010

Healy: If my “rants” are “irrelevant,” you are more than welcome to discount them, dolt. And the soon to be ex-congressman Sestak will ultimately join his friend, ex-congressman Massa on the ash heap of history. Perhaps Massa can console his friend with a “massage.” Of course, Sestak could become quite familiar with such “massages” in a federal prison…

  16. HateSestak

    Apr 19th, 2010

Mr. Diano: You are indeed correct. Sestak’s candidacy is not furthering the interests of the Democratic Party or the common man. Sestak’s candidacy is advancing his own narrow interests and those of the Republican Party. No legitimate Democratic contender would make unsubstantiated allegations against the incumbent Democratic President of the United States. No legitimate Democratic candidate would tout the veracity and truthfulness of right-wing reactionary Rick Santorum at the height of the Democratic primary. No legitimate Democrat would pay their staff minimum wage in the midst of an economic downturn. No, this is not the conduct one would expect from a legitimate Democrat.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is April 20, 2010. Less than one month remains. And Sestak, inexplicably, still has yet to advertise. Any legitimate contender would have invested all of his resources in an ad blitz by this time. Think Representative Sestak is prepared to invest ALL of his $5 million in his Senate bid? If he is truly committed to victory, he would. If he is legitimate contender, he would. If an office-seeker is confident of victory, he/she puts his/her full resources to use. But Sestak is not doing so.

Healy: Incidentally, last time I checked, I was granted tenure decades ago. Clearly, Sestak is as skilled at investigations as he is at campaigning!

  17. David Diano

    Apr 19th, 2010

    Bill-
Interesting that you thought Hater doesn’t have tenure. Who did you think Hater was? (Initials will do) Clearly, you didn’t make that up yourself, so whom at the Sestak campaign did you ask for your misinformation?
Hater is a friend of the professor you were probably thinking of (or rather told of).

    Hater-
Here’s one of the many flaws in Sestak’s late strategy. Voters are influenced by the polls. The final polls will be completed before the last week of advertising, so Sestak now has only three weeks to get more polling data to be able to tout any movement in public opinion, not four weeks.
Quinniapac conducts their polls over the course of a week, and use real people to conduct the polls. Rasmussen conducts it’s polls on a single day and uses automated phone calls, so they don’t know who is answering.
In either case, Sestak is looking at one more poll each from them. He’s not going to have enough time to make a dent in the polls.
In less than two weeks, Arlen will completely kick his ass in the debate.

Please tell us that he had more than 50 volunteers, it is already over and he should give the 5 million back to the folks that gave it to him across the country. We all know he didn’t raise it in Pennsylvania. I am sure if you take a look at the FEC report you will see that nearly all of his money has come from outside the Commonwealth. What more need to be said.
He should have had at least 3 thousand volunteers with him that night but all you have to do is drive past Doylestown, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the others and you will see darkness or a few people at best. I did the tour and it is very sad but to be expected as he is a nobody. I wish I could have more than 1 vote on election day as it would NOT go to No Show Joe

  19. Chesco Dem

    Apr 20th, 2010

    Lana-

If you look at the FEC reports…$3 million of Sestak’s $5 million was left over from his 2008 Congressional run. TRUTH BE TOLD – Sestak hasn’t really been that successful in fundraising for his Senate run. I believe Sestak’s actually running in third place behind both Specter and Toomey for contributions for this election cycle. Also, He NEVER offered to refund that $3 million to the people who contributed it to him.

I agree-it doesn’t look like Sestak has more than 50 volunteers. He claims to have a “grassroots” campaign, but I’ve seen little to support this.

The “little admiral” will be joining the unemployment line soon.
