Senator Specter Launches Latinos for Specter Coalition
By ARLEN SPECTER FOR SENATE
Philadelphia – Senator Arlen Specter will launch his Latinos for Specter Coalition group during a campaign event with U.S. Senator Bob Menendez this afternoon in Philadelphia with a group that includes more than 40 Latino community leaders from across the state.
Pedro Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Latin Cultural Diversity Center Group in Scranton said, “This is the first time any Senator in the City of Scranton or Lackawanna County has given the African American and Latino American community the time of day. We believe that this is an opportunity for our minority community to finally have a voice in congress; a voice that will stand for us and support us. That voice is Arlen Specter.”
“Senator Specter has been an important advocate for the Latino community throughout his time in the U.S. Senate,” said Daniel Jiminez, President of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate & Professional Student Assembly. “He has introduced groundbreaking legislation on immigration reform, signed on as a cosponsor of the DREAM Act, and supported a strong guest worker program. He has also fought to bring jobs back to Pennsylvania in the midst of the economic crisis. I am proud to support his re-election.”
“Senator Specter’s support for both the Latino community and for Pennsylvanians has been unwavering,” said small business owner Sunilda Tejada of Reading. “I am proud to have a Senator who has brought so many jobs to Pennsylvania, supported comprehensive immigration reform, fought for fair treatment of workers, and has been a staunch supporter of the President’s healthcare plan.”
“Senator Specter has supported important initiatives including mentoring programs, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, hate crimes legislation, and the President’s Recovery Act,” said Isamac Torres Figueroa, Reading School Board Member. “I am proud to support him, and intend to do whatever it takes to keep him in the U.S. Senate fighting for Latinos and fighting for Pennsylvanians.”
“Senator Specter has been a hero to the Latino community,” said Julio A. Guridy, Allentown City Councilman. “He supports the guest worker program, and introduced a comprehensive immigration bill in 2006 that had bipartisan support. His bill included important visa reform and expansion, and offered opportunities to those immigrants residing in the United States for more than five years to apply for citizenship. Senator Specter has not only been good on Latino issues, but on many other important issues. I am proud to offer my support and urge others to support him in the May Primary.”
