Rendell: Dems are ‘cowering behind the shower curtains’
Grant Gov. Ed Rendell this much: He tells you what he thinks.
During a panel discussion hosted by The Week Tuesday night, Rendell had some harsh words Republicans—but plenty of criticism for his fellow Democrats, too.
“I don’t think we have a battle for our soul—I think we have lost our soul,” he said, according to The Huffington Post. “We have been cowed into [not] talking about the things that made us Democrats in the first place; that we believe the government can and should make a difference in people’s lives; that we can protect the most vulnerable in our society; that we can, in fact, give opportunities to people who haven’t had it. And that government can be an important catalyst—they can’t do it by itself—but they can be a catalyst for growth.
“That’s what we believe in,” Rendell added. “But [Republicans] have us cowering behind the shower curtains.”
Later, Rendell told the Web site that “we have been out-spun and we are scared.”
“And when you are scared,” he said, “you can do one of two things: you can circle the wagons and hide inside or under the wagon, or you can get out and fight for what you believe in. I think we are starting—President Obama started when he went to the Republican caucus—to fight back and for what we believe in. If we do that, I think our losses will be much less [in 2010] than what anybody suspects.”

Great piece, Ed! There are too many of our Democrats who only worry about keeping their seat in Congress…for what? I don’t know. Why have a Dem in Congress if he isn’t voting and speaking as a Democrat.

The Deloitte contract, special tax breaks for Comcast, the Pittsburgh Office Building sale, no bid contracts for his own law firm, etc., etc., etc. Ed Spendell has spent eight years taking care of those who need no help. Poor fools in the D Party elected a man who cares about them after he has looted the taxpayers on behalf of his friends. He is the Great Oz and the media have kept the curtain up.

Fast Eddy hit the nail on the head. All of you chicken sh*t incumbent Democrats that are running scared need to stand up and fight. The Republicans have been kicking us in the face for years now and we’ve been turning the other cheek. Screw that, its time to fight back. We’ve come a long way since 2004 and we are at the brink of remaking the political landscape of this country in favor of our Party for a generation. The last leg of the journey is always the toughest but we must not live in fear of failure. We must get out there and sell the positives of health care, financial reform, and if we are lucky immigration reform as well; the whole while taking every single filthy Republican to the mat.
After Critz gets thrashed by Burns all of you Dems running scared from health care will see that the path to victory is selling the positive aspects of this bill.

To Ed Rendell-
The way You and TJ Rooney have run the party is to blame for the “lost soul” of many democrats. Your top down and “insider” games have discouraged alot of good democrats, and I (and many others) will be glad to see you and your cronyism go in November. Dont let the door hit you in the *ss on the way out.
You and your kind would stab anyone in the back and sell your “soul” for your next crony scheme. Most democrats are very turned off by that. Its time to put whats best for the party AHEAD of insider deals.

See, Ed, here’s the thing: for the past 30 years, as a good Democrat and lately as a county committee member and a Democratic municipal chair, I’ve been working hard to defeat Republicans like Arlen Specter. I always knew that our party stood for an ideal worth fighting for, and that those like Specter, who supported Republican administrations from Reagan through Bush, wanted us to fail.
So now, when you, the state Committee and the national Democratic party are telling us to forget all about those ideals and the past 30 years, and to accept Arlen Specter as a Democrat and tell the same voters who we told to vote against him for the past 30 years to now vote for him…That’s not just discouraging, it’s simply not possible. Not for me, anyway.
A lot of us arent’ scared, Ed. We just feel like we’ve been abandoned.

Bruce-
I understand your frustration. However, should the message be:
“Let’s stand behind a phony like Sestak, who can’t beat Toomey, just because Sestak is mouthing the words people want to hear.”
Rendell knows what a fraud Sestak is and how weak he is as a candidate. He “anointed” Sestak in 2006, so he knows how disingenuous Sestak is being now. Also, Rendell has worked with Specter over the years and does have good relationship with him.
I’m more p*ssed at Rendell for failing to help out the Delco Dems more, despite how they have delivered for him over the years.
Rendell did a pretty good job as the Mayor of Philly and has done a decent job as Governor, but it’s become obvious that Rendell’s pretty corrupt in the pay-to-play arena, and his backing of Onorato is a bigger insult to Dems than backing Specter.
Bruce, if you REALLY want to complain about fake Democrats, then you should be spending your energy going after Onorato. Your time backing Sestak will be revealed as a waste after the primary.

Now you’re confessing Mr. Rendell? Where were you eight years ago? It’s too easy to do this on the way out of office. Again, we have not one viable replacement running this year, NONE. Pa. taxpayers deserve better. Much better.

Good point BB. He failed to groom a successor resulting in one hell of a mess for the rest of us.

I have my own issues with Ed but it’s not his responsibility to groom a successor.
Rendell knows that Sestak is self-serving and can’t defeat Toomey this fall – that’s why he’s supporting Specter.

As a democrat I never have liked Rendell because he is too much like a republican as are the democratic candidates Onorato, Williams, Wagner (won’t vote for any of these candidates). He is correct that democrats do not stand up for what they believe in, and he should know since he hasn’t done it either. The only candidate I see that is vocal on democratic issues is Joe Hoeffel.

Rendell is supporting Onorato because Onorato is like him. I believe Onorato would just further the pay to play culture we have had with Rendell. While I certainly respect Mr. Rendell’s rallying cry, I would say isn’t that what the tea partiers are doing that everyone criticizes? They are standing up for what they believe in. Agree or disagree with what they are saying, you have to respect that they are getting out and saying what they believe in.

Rendell is from New York. He came to Philadelphia to carpetbag and eat his way to the Governor’s Mansion. He has done NOTHING for Philadelphia and the rest of the state says that he has done nothing for them. Hmmm??? Makes one think. He is neither a Democrat or Republican; he is ALL FOR HIMSELF. He has given Philly a bad name for the past 8 years and it is becoming more clear that he is a master magician and makes everyone argue and the money disappear into the pockets of his $$$friends$$$. He has hurt the democratic party by doing nothing for it! So listen FAT ED – go back to Ballard Spahr and open up an office in Texas with the rest of your Republican friends, you fat pig.
