Specter got tired of waiting to advertise

Specter got tired of waiting to advertise

BETHLEHEM—Senator Arlen Specter’s campaign had initially signaled that it would hold off on airing TV ads until primary opponent Joe Sestak pulled the trigger first. But then Specter decided that it was just time to go.

“[Commercials] traditionally start six weeks before the election, and we decided it was time to go up on television after waiting a week,” Specter told reporters here on Monday after he

Callahan and Specter lean on each other

BETHLEHEM—Call it a case of young Democrats helping new Democrats, and vice versa.

Mayor John Callahan, the White House-backed candidate in the 15th Congressional District, traded endorsements Monday with one of the newer members of his party, Senator Arlen Specter. The two professed their support for one another during a morning news conference that overlooked construction being done on Route 412 here—a project Callahan credited to Specter’s knack for bringing federal dollars home.

Conservative PAC advertising for Russell

Conservative PAC advertising for Russell

Republican Bill Russell’s insurgent campaign in the 12th Congressional District is getting some help from a political action committee that advocates for limited government.

Freedom’s Defense Fund, which advertised against Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential race and describes itself as standing “with conservative, pro-freedom candidates against the radical left and their elitist allies in the mainstream media,” is airing a 30-second TV spot in support of Russell in the western Pennsylvania district. The ad…

Sestak using telephone ‘Town Halls’ for voter outreach

Democrat Joe Sestak had yet to begun airing TV ads last week in his bid to unseat Senator Arlen Specter, but a robust voter contact effort was already under way in the form of telephone “Town Halls.”

Tens of thousands of likely primary voters have already been reached through the effort, which is something of a hybrid between traditional robo-calls and town-hall-style discussions, according to people familiar with the campaign initiative and voters who have…

‘Losing his voice,’ Critz hits back against GOP ad

‘Losing his voice,’ Critz hits back against GOP ad

Democrat Mark Critz has taken to the airwaves to rebut a GOP-sponsored ad that says he supported health care reform legislation.

The 30-second spot actually shows a clip from a commercial by the National Republican Congressional Committee, before Critz says he opposed health care reform, is pro-life, pro-gun, and “not liberal.”

“I’m losing my voice in this campaign,” Critz says hoarsely. “But I’m running for congress so you don’t lose yours.”

It’s unclear how widely…

Pittsburgh ward endorses Sestak, Hoeffel

The largest organization of Democrats in Pittsburgh went decidedly anti-establishment with its statewide endorsements Sunday.

The 14th Ward Independent Democratic Club voted to back Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) in his insurgent bid against incumbent Arlen Specter. And the group, representing a ward with more than 18,000 Democrats, endorsed Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel for governor.

“For more than four decades, the club’s endorsement has helped candidates to receive a larger number of votes than they…
