Newspapers back Specter
In the battle for the hearts of big-city editorial writers, Arlen Specter is off to an early lead.
The editorial pages at both The Inquirer and The Post-Gazette endorsed Specter on Sunday, picking the longtime incumbent over primary challenger Joe Sestak.
“…when you look at the sum of his career and what it has meant to Pennsylvania, you have to conclude he’s a good choice for Democrats,” The Inquirer wrote about Specter.
Of Sestak, The Post-Gazette wrote: “In a different political year, his true-blue liberalism might be just the ticket for the Democratic Party. But in 2010, with an insurgent challenge from the right to claim the seat and with grass-roots tea party activists railing against the role of government, whoever hopes to become Pennsylvania’s next senator will need to win votes from the center. Arlen Specter has a long record of being that kind of vote-getter.”

I’ve watched the Inquirer turn itself into a repub leaning rag under Brian Tierney for the past few years, this just underlines how bad they have become, endorseing two Republicans (Toomey & Specter) and no Democrats.

Healy: Actually, you and I are in complete agreement with respect to the contemporary Philadelphia Inquirer! See – consensus is possible. But the fact remains – these major newspaper endorsements bolster and buttress Senator Specter’s campaign and greatly undermine Representative Sestak’s bid. These endorsements are the death knell of Sestak for Senate – and Representative Sestak undoubtedly knows it. Specter can now tout these endorsements in TV advertisements. Sestak, meanwhile, has little, if anything, to tout (unless he wants to gloat about being endorsed by Eric Massa). Meanwhile, Sestak’s clamorings with respect to Specter’s recent advertisements have obviously had no impact whatsoever on either public opinion or the media opinion. The advertisements continue to run, and they continue to take a heavy toll on Sestak’s already tarnished reputation. Such a shame.

The fact remains that the Inquier endorsed two republicans and no democrats. I’ll take the top ballot position over endorsments from repub rags any day. The ads just highlight Arlen Specter’s repub credentials,no self-respecting Democrat would run such an ad against another Democrat. He still follows Ronnie’s 11th commandment.

His goal, SCUTTLE the Democratic Party ship, because….

Yo’ve got the wrong one scuttling the Democratic ship, Arlen is the one who doesn’t belong. BTW Arlen doesn’t have a campaign office,is he running his campaign out of his Senate office?

Bill-
The core argument made by the papers is that Specter is the Dems best shot at defeating Toomey and holding the seat. Sestak’s poll numbers show a weak, not-ready-for-prime-time campaign that has failed to gain traction.
They also show that the Dems have warmed up to Specter for his votes, clout and support by the President and Vice President, the party and pretty much every prominent Democrat in the state.
BTW, as for the lack of real Democrats in the race, you “forgot” to include Sestak.
3 more weeks to go, then bye-bye Sestak

Joe’s going nowhere.

Healy: Once again, rather than acknowledge a serious setback, Sestak is opting to lambaste and villify any and all who voice opposition to him. The Inquirer and The Post-Gazette endorsed Specter, and lavishly praised the Senator’s contributions. That is the empirical reality. These endorsements clearly mark the close of Sestak’s ill-starred Senate bid. Sestak’s desperate efforts to drum up popular support last week failed miserably. Specter’s (very effective) ads, meanwhile, are ebbing away at what little support Sestak enjoys. Mercifully, the Sestak fiasco (otherwise known as Sestak for Senate) will soon come to an ignominious end.

Specters ads have been very effective in turning Democrats away from him. They highlight why the Democratic party has opposed him and his slimy republican ways for the past 30+ years. Joe Biden didn’t allow him to swift boat Joe in Scranton, not that there was anyone but his staffers and vols there to hear them, most of the speechs that day seemed more like they were trying to convince themselves that Arlen really is a democrat, they failed to sway me. I can’t and won’t vote for him in the primary or general election, many Dems feel the same way,if you want Toomey for a Senator then vote for Arlen,if you want a real Democrat then vote for Sestak. BTW GWB and Santorum won’t be coming to help Arlen in a race with Toomey, that’s how he won in 04,won’t work this time around.

You write: “Specters ads have been very effective in turning Democrats away from him”
Based on what? Are you aware that Sestak’s ads have been very effective at turning away people who felt he was exploiting his child’s illness for shock value?
Biden didn’t have to stop Specter from Swift-boating Joe because Arlen never swift-boated Joe in the first place.
If anyone is using “Republican” tactics here, it’s Sestak by trying to make a mountain out of a molehill like Fox does.
You mention Toomey and Santorum who are trying to damage Specter (and also prop up Sestak). Specter clearly does not belong in the same party with those two jokers, which makes him a better fit for the Dems and our best chance to win in November.

Bill, What are you talking about, Specter doesn’t have a campaign office?–that’s an out-and-out lie. He has a campaign office SEPARATE from his constiuent office (as legally it must be) in the part of the state I’m in. Stop trying to make untrue insinuations.
And of course Arlen won’t have Santorum and GWB campaigning for him this time around. In the general election he’ll certainly have Bob Casey and maybe even Barack Obama himself–and that will make a difference.

From my personal interactions, Specter’s ads seem very persuasive at turning away the few supporters that Sestak had. The No Show Joe ad seems to be a very effectve and accurate ad.
Sestak’s campaign obviously doesn’t have any comeback for it either or they would have run a rebuttal ad by now.
Sestak’s campaign simply waited too late to advertise. He allowed Sen Specter to air first and now Sestak is on the defensive. And time hsa run out for him.

Molly Arlen Specter doesn’t have a campaign office in Phila. at least not one that is advertised or listed any where, sounds like a phantom office to me. They are running a campaign,i’d just like to know where that office is located? Arlen didn’t hesitate to violate the election finance laws in 04, no reason to think he won’t do so again this year. If he’s not running his campaign out of 600 arch st. then where is it?

According to Specter’s campaign website, the campaign office address is:
600 N. 2nd Street, First Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17101
Which makes sense since (I bleieve) his campaign manager lives in the Harrisburg area.
Also, I think that Specter violated the FEC rerporting criteria due to the death of his campaign treasurer. It wasn’t a deliberate or intentional error – I’m sure the Treasurer didn’t plan on dying.
BTW, I don’t think Sestak’s people want to get into a debate about violating campaign laws…

Bruce..
Your snide view of Phila. politics is showing again. If Sestak were to become the nominee, wouldn’t you want to see Bob Brady produce a nice juicy 325K plurality in Philadelphia County in November?
If Phila, Democratic City Committee is firing on almost all cylinders(except for some kamikaze liberals) for Arlen, wouldn’t it be wasteful duplication to maintain a separate campaign structure in the city?
I moved to Montco in late 2005 and became active immediately in democratic politics here after doing so in Phila. It always amazes me to encounter DEMOCRATS who act as though City Line Avenue is the State boundary.

Healy: Obviously, if Senator Specter’s advertisements were ineffective and/or counterproductive, he would have discontinued them altogther. He has not. And these ads, meanwhile, continue to ebb away at whatever support remains for the 7th District demagogue. Representative Sestak’s efforts last week (surrounding himself with veterans, dispatching letters to the Vice-President of the United States), by contrast, have clearly not produced results. The Inquirer and The Post-Gazette evidently were not influenced by Sestak’s clamorings. Nor was the general public.

Dem Voter: You are indeed correct – Sestak should have launched campaign advertisements at an earlier date. The question that Sestak’s few remaining supporters should be posing is WHY the 7th District demagogue failed to do so. Why would a suposedly viable candidate for public office refrain from committing his resources to TV ads? Why has Sestak thus far failed to counter Specter’s allegedly inaccurate ad with one of his own? If Sestak was truly outraged by Specter’s claims, he would almost certainly have launched his own ads to refute these claims. Unless, of course, Sestak has to conserve his resources for some reason…

As for Sestak’s Philly office, it’s across the street from a store I visit one evening a week. Since it opened I’v never seen more than 3 people in there around 6pm.
When was the last time you saw fewer than 4 people at Sestak’s Media HQ? The Philly office seems to be there for show.
The Philly office is smack dab in the very liberal 8th Ward. The 8th Ward Dem Committee endorsed Specter, so that seems to have backfired.

In case you haven’t paid attention Bush is long gone and forgotten until such time as he goes to jail for all the murders he committed and Tricky, slimy Santorum was run out of town on a rail. My my you are really are out of touch. We know have a great President and a great Senator that both will be reelected without your help and sure as hell without the mass murder or trick Rick getting into the show. In fact, I would welcome both of these losers so that we could win really big, say like 85% of the vote. So please bring them on, we are waiting. Dare you to try it, that sure would be fun.

I really take issue with the Pittsburgh Gazette in their understanding of No Show Joe.Since I live in the 7th CD and they are out in PGH I really don’t think they know what they are talking about when then call him a True Blue Liberal. He is as True Blue as a cock roach. He has NEVER done anything that would make the people of his district call him True Blue anything. He is only there for himself and a few members of his family.
I have heard him called many names but never a True Blue Liberal. That is really funny to say the least.
Of course they did get the endorsement right of Sen. Specter so I can’t really complain.
He is truly a very stupid man and I understand why the Navy didn’t want him around due to his “poor work conditions.” What a piece of work he is and I hope he likes working on “K” street with the others creepy people and thieves of the people. Wake up people he has you all fooled, do some research and you will find the truth if you dare. Just a few days left and he is out of our hair forever.! That my friends is a very good thing !

Actually, a big reason for the horrible economy is Bush. However, Clinton didn’t by help repealling the Glass-Stegall Act which accounts for a large portion of this mess.
“What corresponde course did you get your degree from?” – Is an obvious violation of the civility that Mr. Hirschhorn requested. I call upon you to cease your personal attacks on the people in this forum. Also, you (and everyone) should always remember…that’s there is always someone out there with better credentials then your own. Better remember that before you start attacking others.
Besides…no one is arguing that Sestak isn’t book smart. I think his political “smarts” and his social skills are in doubt here.

Which do you think will catch on?
“Flat Tax Arlen” or “No Show Joe”
Joe’s 3 stars (retired at 2) and Harvard degree attest to his intellectual potential, not to his ability to apply it to politics or being a good boss or treating people decently.
Joe never paid attention to the adage about how should treat people on the way up. Now that he’s on the way down, maybe he’ll learn something.
Maybe instead of hiding behind his flunkies, Joe should come blog here for a few days and really answer some questions.

They called Dick Vermeil the little dictator…..
Check out the ABC News 6 clip from an earlier broadcast of Joe Sestak in one of the latest interviews where he disputes the charge of being relieved of his command!
Joe said: My commanding officer said it well. He said I stood up to people who didn’t want to be challenged, I was a patriot’s patriot, I was courageous.” (How about a FOOL!)
Joe’s off the reservation, arcane snickering about being a patriot’s patriot clearly shows Sestak was off the reservation and paid the ultimate price for not being the team player and not fitting into the plan, like a kid hell bent on getting the square block into the round hole of a kids toy puzzle!
Sestak just doesn’t fit, we are now seeing and understanding more and more about this man and we must now wonder how he would carry himself in similar political situations that may mirror his military experience.
Joe has defended how he treats his staff and he related it to military style! Is this what we all have to look forward to!
Look out friends, he meant it when he said that everyone should have the same medical coverage that he had in the military!
I can see it now….at 18 years of age, not the draft, but everyone will serve the military! You won’t have a choice and he won’t treat you any worse than he treats his staff!
