Former Congressman Nelligan endorses Madeira
By MADEIRA FOR CONGRESS
David Madeira received a key endorsement from former U.S. Congressman and Harveys Lake resident James Nelligan at a fundraiser held at the Westmoreland Club in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Madeira, a conservative Republican, is seeking the 10th Congressional District seat currently held by Chris Carney.
In endorsing Madeira, Nelligan spoke of the current challenges Americans face in preserving their Constitutional freedoms.
“I’m afraid we’re losing our freedom in this country,” Nelligan said. “Certainly government is taking everything over. The Constitution is being forgotten. If they’re not forgetting it, they’re trying to change it. We need limited government. That’s what our forefathers built this country on. That’s what freedom is built on,” Nelligan said. “I believe Dave Madeira is the best we have in the 10th Congressional district.”
Nelligan has more than four decades of service to the country, including being a member of the U.S. Army and working for the U.S. General Accounting Office and the House Committee on Governmental Operations. He is a past director of the Finance and Grants Management Division of the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, Office of Property Management, Office of Federal Management Policy, General Services Administration, U.S. House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and the U.S. House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce.
He was elected to Congress in 1980, the same year Ronald Reagan became President. Nelligan reflected on the Reagan Era in his endorsement of Madeira.
“I am yearning for somebody with David’s qualifications, David’s philosophy and David’s heart to go back to the days of Reagan, and go back to the days when we had true freedom,” Nelligan said.
Upon completion of his time as a Congressman, Nelligan became the Deputy Secretary of Revenue for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and later served as the Director for Governor Thornburg’s Washington, D.C. office where he lobbied for the State of Pennsylvania.
“I am very honored to have the support of such a long-time conservative stalwart like Congressman James Nelligan,” Madeira said.
