Callahan and Specter lean on each other
BETHLEHEM—Call it a case of young Democrats helping new Democrats, and vice versa.
Mayor John Callahan, the White House-backed candidate in the 15th Congressional District, traded endorsements Monday with one of the newer members of his party, Senator Arlen Specter. The two professed their support for one another during a morning news conference that overlooked construction being done on Route 412 here—a project Callahan credited to Specter’s knack for bringing federal dollars home.
“I am proud to stand here and lend my full support to Arlen Specter in his race for the Democratic nomination to the United States Senate,” Callahan said. “The people of the Lehigh Valley, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and this nation need leaders like Senator Specter.”
Specter also spoke highly of Callahan, but the event had the makings of one arranged more for the purpose of helping the incumbent Republican-turned-Democrat defeat Joe Sestak in next month’s primary. Callahan, who doesn’t face a primary before taking on Congressman Charlie Dent (R-15), opened the news conference and spoke in front of a Specter campaign banner.
The endorsements came four days after Vice President Joe Biden attended fundraiser that brought in $178,000 for Callahan, and Biden is set to headline another fundraiser for Specter this month. But Callahan said his support for Specter had nothing to do with political calculation.
“This is a personal decision of mine based on the relationship I’ve established with Senator Specter,” Callahan said, calling Specter “instrumental” in obtaining federal funding for projects in the city.

Callahan is a dynamic guy, and I think he’s going to send Charlie Dent into retirement next November – but this is yet another example of top-down, “do as you’re told” Democratic machine politics. Callahan knows he needs to make this endorsement, whether or not he wanted to. As “the White House backed candidate in the 15th,” he has to do certain favors for his supporters.
This was one.

Just shows how low some Democrats will stoop to win a house seat.

Bruce-
No sitting PA congressional Democrat has endorsed Sestak.
Who was the last sitting congressman to endorse Sestak? ERIC MASSA!!!
Just face it, either Sestak has no friends or pretty much every single elected Democrat has no conscience. Are claiming that we are a party of cowards, or can you face the reality that Sestak just doesn’t have the goods to bond with his fellow Dems and defeat Toomey?
Most of the people (including myself) that plan to vote for Specter aren’t doing it because we like Specter. It’s because we are making the grown-up decision that Specter may be bitter medicine, but he’s the BEST chance we have at defeating Toomey. It’s really that simple. Sestak can’t get the support or energy from the Democratic base nor get any traction in the polls after a year. Sestak couldn’t catch fire unless he doused himself with gasoline.

It just shows how low Sestak will stoop to get an endorsement.

David, when the White House throws a life raft to a drowning Republican like Specter, the rest of the party hierarchy – including sitting Congressmen, who need as much party support as they can get – are going to go along.
But what was good for the White House during these past months and what is good for PA Democrats in the next six years are two different things.
There is no doubt that Specter has been good for Obama. And I’m thankful he was.
But that doesn’t mean he deserves to be our nominee for Senator. Not when we have a better Democrat to pick. And Joe, not Arlen, will run better against Toomey in November, make no mistake about it. Voters want a fresh face, and Republicans want Specter’s head on a pike. Sestak gives voters a great alternative to Toomey’s wingnuttiness, and he takes away the Repub anger that would motivate them if Specter ran.
And once Sestak beats Specter in the primary, watch how many top Dems line up to say they were with him all the time. It’ll be like dropping the house on the Wicked Witch.

Bailey: Again, why hasn’t your champion opted to advertise yet? If he was truly committed to victory, he would invest all of his $5 million in an advertising blitz. But he has not done so, and does not appear poised to do so.

Specter isn’t the perfect nominee, but he can beat Toomey in November. Sestak’s horribly managed primary campaign hasn’t gotten any traction. If Sestak ran a general election campaign against – Toomey like he’s run his primary campaign – he’d loose by a landslide!

“And once Sestak beats Specter in the primary, watch how many top Dems line up to say they were with him all the time. It’ll be like dropping the house on the Wicked Witch.” I wouldn’t bet the farm on that one! Sestak has really pissed off the democratic elite and the democratic base during this primary.

Where are you: Interesting indeed. GOP Hack Sestak appears unwilling to invest his $5 million in television advertisments, but is fervently encouraging the common man to support his quest. GOP Hack Sestak purports to be an ardent Democrat, yet he has repeatedly made unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations against the incumbent Democratic President of the United States. GOP Hack Sestak, clearly, has arcane motives and is exploiting the populace to further his own narrow aims. How else can one explain the many inconsistencies that surround Sestak for Senate?

Y’know, Chesco, you and Diano and the rest of the Specter puppets here keep repeating that mantra. It’s like saying it often enough will make it true – but the truth is that Sestak’s campaign is doing exactly what he wants it to do.
His recognition and his support *have* crept up slowly over the past six months, while Specter’s have fallen, and there’s plenty of talk among the party grassroots about supporting the Sestak candidacy. He is now poised to unleash a hefty ad buy that will introduce him to voters who are just now tuning into the fact that there’s a primary election next month. And by Primary day, he will be poised to be the Democratic US Senate candidate in November. It’s a campaign that has managed its funds and its strategy very carefully.
Like they say in the Southwest Air ads:
Arlen, pack your bags – It’s on.

I’m not a Specter “puppet”, and I make a point of posting under my own name (as you do). I don’t get contacted by them, talking points, etc. I’m opposed to Sestak holding any public office. Specter is merely the only one who has a chance of beating Toomey.
The campaign has saved money, at the expense of squandering opportunity.
As for “recognition and support”, Specter’s numbers have gone up. More Dems view him as sharing their values and being a reliable vote.
Sestak could have won this, if he didn’t d*ck around over last summer while he played the indecisive Hamlet. He should have announced in April/May instead of pussy-footing around with having to ask his kid, dog and goldfish for permission. His daughter is actually pretty smart, so she might have realize that if got his ass kicked, he’d be out of politics and be able to spend more time at home. The dog probably figured that Joe will be home more often for walks and cleaning up his poop. (the dog’s poop)
But, despite his missteps last summer, Joe’s big mistake was alienating former supporters over the past few years, so now many of them are working for other campaigns, or just undermining Joe.
