Touey ‘disgusted’ by Lentz ballot challenge

Touey ‘disgusted’ by Lentz ballot challenge

Democrat E. Teresa Touey wants 7th District primary opponent Bryan Lentz to withdraw the ballot challenge against her, saying the signatures she gathered to get on the ballot are valid and that voters are “angry at both parties for these kinds of tactics.”

“This is the kind of behavior that voters do not want,” Touey said in an interview Monday morning.

After a few days of silence following the challenge filed by supporters of Lentz, Touey struck back on Sunday with a statement asking “What the heck is WRONG with Bryan Lentz?” She followed it with an e-mail to supporters, and was set to hold a press conference Monday morning at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Tinicum. She said she’s putting together a legal team for when the challenge will be heard in court early next month. It’s one of three ballot challenges spurred by Lentz, which together seek to have all three candidates besides him kept off the ballot. Democrat Gail Conner, who Lentz is also looking to keep off the ballot, could not be reached for comment late last week. A ballot challenge against Republican Pat Meehan will also be heard next month.

In the interview, Touey said she had spent up to 12 hours a day for three weeks, standing outside area supermarkets and gathering signatures.

“I’m an experienced professional who knows how to gather signatures,” said Touey, who was a political consultant in Massachusetts before moving back to the district last year to run.

“I’m disgusted and I think the Founders would be disgusted,” she said. “Due process and the voters are being disregarded by this.”

In a statement, Lentz campaign manager Vincent Rongione said the issue is simply about “complying with the law.”

“The law is very clear and the standard to be placed on the ballot is very low,” he said.

Though many candidates gathering signatures typically spend time going door-to-door in addition to prospecting the kind of high-density areas that Touey frequented, she said her time for door-to-door canvassing was limited.

“I don’t have a whole band of insiders helping me or a whole band of staffers helping me,” Touey said. “I’ve done it in front of supermarkets a lot before. It was a great experience, and I recommend it to both Bryan Lentz and Pat Meehan.”

I wouldn’t go as far as being “disgusted”, but I certainly am disappointed in the Lentz campaign. Pat Meehan is more than “fair game” because of the decades of political corruption and dubious election practices over the years by the Delco GOP. Now, what would be “fair game” is if Conner or Touey tried to knock each other off, since they are in the same political “weight class” and vying for “anti-establishment” votes.

The Bryan Lentz was endorsed in Chester, Delco and Montco, so his name will be on all the sample ballots handed out at the polls. Going after Touey and Conner is completely unnecessary. Is Bryan going to feel “unsatisfied” if he gets only 95% of the vote?

While I like Vince tremendously, his “complying with the law” response to this falls short. There’s a difference between driving a stolen car with fake plates and having your inspection sticker expired by one day.

If Bryan beats them in the May primary, they and their supporters can rally behind him in November. But, if he kicks them off the ballot, I can’t image him getting their support, even in a tight race in November.

With the election of Obama, and local candidates like Keith Collins and John Linder coming into prominence and energizing the black community to vote, pushing Gail Conner off the ballot is going to result in a backlash and resentment that Bryan and the Delco Dems can ill afford. It’s just bad politics and a piss-poor decision. Nobody likes a bully.

If the motivation is to deflect GOP criticism for going after Meehan, then that’s just playing into the GOP’s hands to divide the Dems. Who gives a rat’s @ss what Pat Meehan and the Delco GOP think?

BTW, supermarket sign-ups are a bad idea unless you’ve got voter lists on hand to verify names, addresses and party registration.

“I’m an experienced professional who knows how to gather signatures,” said Touey, who was a political consultant in Massachusetts before moving back to the district last year to run.

Not much of an “experienced professional.” Anyone who is “experienced” at gathering signatures knows you don’t do it in front of supermarkets. Too many people not registered, or tell you they’re registered one way when they’re registered another.

One more reason Touey isn’t the “experienced professional” she touts herself as.

    wpadem-
Exactly. So, I’m not seeing the “threat level” that requires kicking her off the ballot. If there were voting booths in the “Produce aisle”, then Lentz might need to be concerned. :-)

It is not a matter of the “threat level.” Rules are rules. Are we not all interested in maintaining the integrity of the voting process? I’m sure the Lentz petitions have also been scrutinized for errors.I also take exception to the condescending comment that “pushing Gail Conner off the ballot is going to result in a backlash and resentment.” I resent the suggestion that the black community would have an anything goes attitude in regard to election procedures which guarantee honest and fair elections.

Rules? What rules? The “rules” wre designed so that whte men in smokey rooms could decide that women and minorities are “NOT ALLOWED” to run unless handpicked by them. What a bunch of weak apologists are you people in the ‘burbs. We may as well have allowed the monarchy to stay in charge. What is the differnce if you have to have a million dollars to run because lame challenges like these cost money to defend.

I have worked with Ms. Touey throughout many campaigns in Massachusetts and know that she is a seasoned political professional with years of hands-on experience at all levels of government. It is important for her voice and perspective to be heard as a candidate in this race. What is the Lentz camp trying to prove here?
