Comments on: Teachers’ union endorses Onorato

Onorato’s 8-page education position paper does not mention the word “pension” once.

This is arguably the single biggest issue that will affect teachers in the coming years: full and fair funding of their state pension plan. And Onorato does not even mention it.

And yet they endorse him.

Meanwhile, Joe Hoeffel says this:

“We must keep state pensions as defined benefit programs. Switching to a defined contribution program, as some have proposed, would create two classes of teachers in a field where equality and teamwork are essential..We must ensure a safe and secure retirement for all current and future public school employees, without compromising funding for the programs directly benefiting our students.”

So which of these candidates is the best choice for teachers?

No candidate in either party has done more for public education than Jack Wagner — school safety audits, his fight against money-losing derivatives, his identification of millions of dollars in waste to be put back into classrooms, trying to restore the state teacher pension system to solvency, etc. etc. Regardless of this endorsement, Jack can and will be the “education governor” for PA. Go JW!

Please. At 16 percent, Drink Tax Dan isn’t cleaning anyone’s clock. The only thing Dan the Beer Tax Man is “cleaning” is the pockets out of Papa Ed’s money men.

Onorato is a corporatist Dem. He is owned and operated by the law firms, big banks and government contractors. My bet is that the guys who gave him money for contracts will get taken care of and the union people will be snowed again. After all, they backed Ed and he has not done a thing to take care of the looming pension crisis except to make it worse. Joe Hoeffel will protect the workers. Onorato will protect his donors.

To the other Dems in this race, I say this: Let Onorato spend his millions bashing Corbett rather than bashing you. Do the right things, drop out now, keep the Party united and give us the best possible chance in November. Onorato is not only cleaning your clocks right now, but he’s clearly the best candidate to take on Corbett in the fall.
