Ridge headlines fundraiser, endorses Meehan

Ridge headlines fundraiser, endorses Meehan

Tom Ridge was in Delaware County this week to pitch in for Pat Meehan.

The former governor headlined a fundraiser for the Republican congressional hopeful Tuesday night in Springfield. An invitation to the event at the Springfield Country Club put it as a $500 per person affair, with V.I.P.s dropping $2,000.

In a campaign statement, Ridge praised Meehan, the party’s candidate in the 7th District.

“Pat Meehan will provide the leadership we need in Congress to create jobs, boost our economy, and fight to reduce deficit spending,” Ridge said. “Our nation faces many challenges in the years ahead, and we need someone of Pat’s integrity and courage to fight for us in Washington. I have known Pat Meehan for many years—dating back to my tenure as Governor—and Pat has always been an independent thinker, someone who will stand up for what is right.  Pat will cut through the gridlock and bureaucracy to get the people’s business done.”

Ridge was a mediocre governor, his claim to fame is he stopped Preate from becoming governor, which would have been a debacle as history proved(Preate was charged) however, Meehan still has the electorate to deal with as a typical politico.

    Mar 31st, 2010

Medicore? What rock are you under? Ridge was a successful governor who cut taxes, passed Growing Greener and helped revive PA’s sagging economy. The last round of poll numbers on Ridge were still very high and he’s been out of office in PA for nearly eight years. Dem activists may not think much of him, but voters certainly do. Meehan and others are smart to campaign with this respected and popular GOPer.

Like I need one more reason to vote for Brian Lentz. Ridge also was a disgrace as head of Homeland security, allowing it to be used as a polical tool for bush in 04.

So who would a PA congressional candidate rather campaign with these days? Tom Ridge or Barack Obama, who’s favorable ratings in this state are sinking faster than the Titanic?

    To Ridge Rocks

Pa has one of the worst unemployment numbers in the nation that started with Ridge, he used 20 state troopers waste of pa tax money to accompany him on the opening of Eazy Pass and his public relations far succeeded his actual deeds. Growing green was symbolic and quite frankly other than his beeing a Vietnam Vet, which I do have respect for and I am conservative, I think he was a creation of perception but not reality.

As a conservative, I would agree that Ridge was mediocre. He was a pro-choice gov who did nothing to limit abortions and he passed CHIP. We now have Medicare for the old, CHIP for the young, Medicaid for the poor, and ObamaCare for nearly everyone else. We have single player in this country. We’re Finland.

Ridge is yet one more moderate Republican that sold out to the crazy Rove-Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican Party. Yet he couldn’t get a spot as McCain’s VP because he still wasn’t crazy enough for the wingnuts that are now calling the shots.

I agree that Ridge let himself be used for political gain by the Bush administration regarding Homeland security. I did feel that Ridge was uncomfortable with the politics of it, and that’s why he got out.

The idea that Meehan is a leader is laughable. If Ridge was injected with some truth serum, this is the speech he might have given:

“Pat Meehan will provide the party-line votes we need in Congress to turn back policies to create jobs, boost our economy, and fight to reduce deficit spending. Our nation faces many challenges in the years ahead, and the GOP needs someone with Pat’s lack of integrity and courage to rollover for us in Washington. I have known Pat Meehan for many years—dating back to my tenure as Governor—and Pat has never been an independent thinker, he’s someone who will ignore what is right. Pat will cut through the gridlock and bureaucracy and do whatever his GOP masters tell him to do.”

…and everyone knows Lentz would be nothing more than a lapdog for the wildly unpopular Obama/Pelosi/kook liberal agenda, which is exactly why the poor guy will get crushed in November.

  10. Bruce Bailey

    Mar 31st, 2010

    Wildly unpopular? Not hardly, Bub:

    (3/23-3/25)
    Obama, Fav. vs. Unfav.: 56/39
    Dem. Party: 40/53
    Dem. Congress: 40/56
    Rep. Party: 28/67
    Rep. Congress: 21/71

Just keep telling yourself that all this Teabag nonsense is winning you votes. And I’ll keep looking forward to November.

  11. Dem Debacle

    Mar 31st, 2010

Only a clown would think the Dems aren’t in serious trouble in November…

3/19/10 Poll: “Forty-eight percent (48%) of Pennsylvania voters approve of President Obama’s job performance, with 29% who Strongly Approve. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove, including 41% who Strongly Disapprove.”

Bub, it’s only going to get worse with amnesty, cap and tax, etc…bye, bye Dems.

  12. Pike GOPer

    Mar 31st, 2010

Ridge hardly “sold” out the “Bush/Rove” wing of the Party. And he certainly did not politicize DHS. Case in point, Ridge submitted his resignation, not long after the 2004 Election because he did not feel right about what happened. Any educated student of textbook politics would tell you that Ridge did the right thing. As a member of the cabinet, he could not agree publicly with stance of the Administration, so he resigned. Tom Ridge was an excellent DHS Secretary and excellent Governor.

  13. Bruce Bailey

    Mar 31st, 2010

As Homeland Security czar, Ridge sold the American public a bill of goods in the form of heightened “threat levels” whenever it met the political needs of his bosses, Bush & Cheney. It took a damn long time for him to remember where he put his conscience and his spine.

  14. Jim

    Mar 31st, 2010

Bruce Bailey, you’re hilarious. If you’re going to post Obama’s approval numbers, at least cite them to the Daily Kos, which is where they came from. Let everyone know what a lunatic you are for reading/believing that site. 56% approval, please. The SEIU poll has him at 92%!

  15. Reality check

    Mar 31st, 2010

Ridge was trailing Specter last Spring by 3 percentage points in a Senate match up — and that’s without any type of campaigning. Ridge is still incredibly popular across the state, whether the Dems like it or not. Then again, these are the same people who are in denial that they are at risk of losing control of the House

  16. Bruce Bailey

    Mar 31st, 2010

Hey Jim – It’s actually a Research 2000 poll, commissioned by DKos. Research 2000 is really one of the better polls in the business, and one of the only ones to fully open its crosstabs for inspection.

Please feel free to tell me where their methodology is faulty, Jim. It’s all there for you.

Or you can just continue with the usual GOP smear job that uses name-calling instead of facts.

  17. Dem Debacle

    Mar 31st, 2010

Enjoy your lefty Utopia while you can, Dems. The party’s over in a few months. The big GOP wins in Democrat Mass. and NJ were just the beginning.

  18. David Diano

    Mar 31st, 2010

There’s ‘approval’ and the other side offering a reasonable/viable alternative.

The GOP doesn’t have a viable alternate to Obama or his plans.

  19. Dem Debacle

    Mar 31st, 2010

The “alternative?” Stop big government, lower our taxes and allow people to spend more of their own money, not the bureaucrats. A good GOP message that will cause the status quo Dems to lose seats all across the country this fall.

    Dam Debacle

Cut taxes? After the deficits of the Bush Administration, do you still believe in supply side economics?

  21. BB

    Mar 31st, 2010

Tom Ridge simply lost all credibility in this state when he failed to stem the tide of the pension fiasco which will hit home soon, and electricity rates, which will also hit home soon.

  22. Dem Debacle

    Mar 31st, 2010

Oh, please. Any first year economics student knows that lower tax rates stimulate economic growth and generate tax revenue. Of course, the spending spree that often follows leads to deficits, and yes, there’s plenty of blame to go around for that.

  23. Respect for Ridge

    Mar 31st, 2010

Tom Ridge is a great man. He has accomplished far more than most men dream of. I could only wish to achieve as much as he has in his career. It is very easy to be a critic. It is another to the be the one taking the risks and making things happen. Ridge is a respected figure in PA as well as the national stage. He is so for a reason. He is a leader. He stepped up to the plate after 9/11 to take on a very serious challenge. He has endorsed Meehan and in doing so he has endorsed a winning candidate. Meehan will win in 2010 and Tom Ridge will continue to be a well respected public figure.

  24. Montco 4 Change

    Mar 31st, 2010

CHIP was signed into law by Governor Casey. How could you expect any republican governor to pass any sort of progressive legislation?

  25. huw

    Mar 31st, 2010

The interesting thing about Ridge’s visit is that it went largely unadvertised and unnoticed. This was a money raising event where the Delco’s big donors got to meet Ridge and write a check for Meehan. Could it be that Meehan didn’t really want to advertise this, as Ridge, being pro-life, isn’t exactly the darling of the Pa GOP or the tea party folks. Meehan still has to be careful, if he’s perceived as a RINO he could well face a strong independent challenger. He wants the money but at this time is a little ambivalent about the association.

    Dem Debacle-
Lentz was (and is) an Obama supporter. That doesn’t make him a lapdog for their policies, but rather a supporter and advocate.

I really like how you guys keep misinterpreting Scott Brown’s win in Mass. The registration there is 51% Independent. Scott Brown voted for their universal health care bill and ran de-emphasizing that he was a Republican. If he wasn’t falling into the obstructionist abyss, he would have voted for the new health care reforms.

As for your ideas about what first year economics students “know” about taxes, that’s why first year students aren’t put in charge of the economy. Duh!

If you had lower taxes, how much would you put aside to build roads and bridges?

    huw-
I was thinking the same thing about pro-choice vs pro-life. Ridge isn’t really that welcome in the new, radicalized GOP. He was on McCain’s short list, but the anti-abortion crowd wanted someone extreme (instead of someone who could help McCain win).

Okay, The duct tape king endorsed a Guy that should not be on the ballot, The same people like Judge et all that forged the signatures for Meehan were at the country club paying that kind of money they are job holders and can more than afford it. This is where their patronage pays off. They have to pay or they will lose their jobs. These people are as evil as the devil. The WAR board still lives and only the people can get rid of this cancer in Delco.

Tom Ridge, the father of pay raises and unvouchered expenses, late night stadium funding, and phony ‘conservative’ endorser of the good ole boy establishment.
    Mr. Diano,
If I had lower taxes, maybe the government would stop subsidizing so called artists who can’t make a living, yet refuse to find another job. Maybe what I do pay in taxes would actually go to fixing roads and bridges instead of subsidizing SEPTA so they don’t have to raise their fares a dime or keep union drivers on routes that have 3 people who ride the damn bus. Just a thought. lol

With all due “respect” to Respect for Ridge’s comments here, sorry, but this man does not deserve much respect. Come on, any decent American politician called upon would have stepped up to the plate after 9/11, he just happened to be the one that was called on by the President. He contributed directly to the pension gap fiasco and the electric rate cap fiasco that will hit Pa. taxpayers hard later this decade, he sits on the board of the questionable Hershey Trust collecting a six figure payout annually, is a gold ole boy insider who winked his approval for pay raises and non-voucher expenses. These are facts, not simply being a critic. It’s hard to have “respect” for a man like this.

Why are Tom Ridge and his wife making such major public exposure on the air and in person?
