PSEA Backs Specter

By ARLEN SPECTER FOR SENATE

HARRISBURG (March 16, 2010) – Pennsylvania’s largest school employee union has recommended Arlen Specter for re-election to the U.S. Senate in the state’s upcoming primary election on May 18.

Jim Testerman, president of the 191,000-member Pennsylvania State Education Association, said today, “Pennsylvania’s students and public schools have always been able to count on Senator Specter’s support, and we are eager to support his re-election. PSEA recommends Senator Specter to our members and we stand ready to assist his campaign.”

The 2010 campaign marks the fourth time PSEA has supported Specter for the U.S. Senate. PSEA previously backed Specter in 1980, 1998, and in 2004.
PSEA invited all the candidates for U.S. Senate to interviews in February. “Senator Specter throughout his career has consistently supported the cause of increased federal support of public education,” said Testerman.

In his PSEA interview, Specter responded to questions about federal education reform initiatives, about PSEA’s “20/20 Vision for the Future” (available online at www.psea.org/vision), an invaluable resource for champions of public education. The PSEA report outlines clear strategies in four areas:

–Full and fair funding for public education;
–Proven, research-based strategies for increasing student achievement;
–Teaching and learning conditions that make student achievement possible; and
–Support and respect for education professionals in order to recruit and retain a quality workforce into the future.

Testerman is a science teacher in the Central York School District. A state affiliate of the National Education Association, PSEA represents approximately 191,000 future, active and retired teachers and school employees, and health care workers in Pennsylvania.
