Pittsburgh LGBT group backs Specter

Pittsburgh LGBT group backs Specter

A prominent LGBT group in Pittsburgh has endorsed Senator Arlen Specter’s reelection bid, as the longtime incumbent continues to to mobilize his longstanding support within the gay community.

The Steel City Stonewall Democrats voted to endorse Specter, but did not make an endorsement in the gubernatorial race.

“I think Arlen Specter’s successful championship of increased funding for critical medical research, his commitment to DOMA repeal, his commitment to the repeal of the failed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy, and his long-standing ability to get things done were all major reasons why the majority of our members voted to endorse Arlen,” Lance Friedman, a member of the group’s executive board, said in a campaign statement.

Are they a gay group or a Democrat group? Are they trying to push for more rights in a bipartisan way, or are they just Democrat hacks? I think the answer is obvious.

    To review:
    Arlen Specter, 2004:
“When the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts upheld same-sex marriage earlier this year, I stated that I believed marriage was a sacred institution between a man and a woman, as evidenced by my vote in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.”

    Arlen Specter 2006:
“Mr. President, I have sought recognition to oppose S.J. Res. 1, known as the marriage amendment. I do believe marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. I believe the Congress of the United States has acted responsibly on the Defense of Marriage Act.”

Arlen Specter, Sept. 2009 (letter to constituent):
“I support traditional marriage as defined in DOMA, and although I appreciate the goal of the proposed amendment, I do not believe it is necessary to amend the Constitution at this time.
I believe this is an issue most appropriately addressed at the state level, and most states are working hard to protect marriage.”

Arlen Specter, March 2010 (Huffington Post):
“The time has come to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)…”

He will say anything, do anything to protect his job and his status in Washington. One party has been the champion of the LGBT community for the past 30 years and he has not been a member of it. He came running to it when the Republican party decided it wanted to go even further off the rightwing cliff.

Kudos to Specter for not wanting to play there anymore. But that doesn’t redeem him for his past.

    Bruce-

The maps seems to really be getting small for sestak now. By election day im predicting HQ
will be a basement or cellar in his bunker. Do you think he’ll still carry the winter military
    jacket around in the spring?

It says they have not yet endorsed a gubernatorial candidate. Assuming they place LGBT issues above partisanship, I would implore them, and any gay rights group, to consider Marakay Rogers. She is the Libertarian candidate for Governor this year. She herself identifies as LGBTQ. Check out an interview regarding this when she ran for Attorney General back in 2008: http://outrightlibertarians.blogspot.com/2008/10/endorsement-marakay-rogers-for.html

Representative Sestak purports to be a progressive champion – and yet he commands little support among labor unions, members of the gay community, etc. If Sestak is such an exponent of progressive causes, why the minimal support? Just as he embellished his unremarkable, unexceptional military career, Sestak exaggerated his contributions to the progressive movement. And progressives recognize this.

Sestak for Senate is an unprecedented political fiasco – and it marks the end of this demagogue’s undistinguished tenure. And the people of PA are grateful to be rid of him.

    Bruce-
Hate to burst your bubble, but when I asked Sestak about same sex marriage back in 2006, he said marriage was between a man and a woman. He was okay with civil unions but didn’t support gay marriage.

My fellow LGBT’ers have made a huge mistake. I thought they were a bit more progressive than that. Apparently not. Sigh.

I am surprised that they didn’t go for Hoeffel, the most gay-friendly gov. candidate. Maybe enough Steel City Stonewallers really are party hacks who are beholden to local yokel Onorato.

    Dave –
Other than what I’m sure is your faultless memory, can you show me any published, on-the-record quotes (like I’ve supplied with Specter above) where he’s a cheerleader for the Bush/Cheney/Fundamentalist Defense of Marriage Act?

Whereas Specter was all in favor of it, voted for it, and sang its praises right through last September, when he started realizing he might need LGBT votes when he ran in the Democratic primary. Disgusting.

    Bruce-
Sestak stayed away from the issue in public in 2006. I had asked him because of all the Republican talk at the time of having a constitutional amendment. Even though Joe supported repealing DADT, he wouldn’t emphasize it as a campaign theme because he was counting on the votes of lots of anti-gay conservatives for the election.

That aside, you’ve totally convinced me that Sestak’s the man for the job. How could I not support such an amazing individual? Why did it take me until TODAY to see how wonderful he is?
I’ll have to run right over to Sestak HQ for a bumper sticker and a lawn sign.

Dave, I note the date. I am sure you will be back to your foolish Hating Sestak ways once the calendar turns.

    Sestak’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy is:

Don’t Ask me why I’m so far behind in the polls. Don’t Tell me that Specter got yet another major LGBT endorsement.

I’m so proud to be supporting Sestak that I’m bursting at the seams. I doubt I’ll be able to contain and sustain it all past today into April 2nd.

I guess if only gay people were allowed to vote Arlen would be feeling pretty good right now. Unfortunately, he’s not doing too well with the straight vote and that’s kind of a big deal.

  15. HateSestak

    Apr 1st, 2010

John: Public opinion polls clearly suggest otherwise. Representative Sestak continues to lag behind by upwards of 20% in most polls. I realize that Sestak has delusions of grandeur and cannot grapple with empirical reality, but must his few remaining lackeys succumb to lunacy also? Aside from a notable labor racketeer and an ex-congressman who fondle the genitals of innocent young males, no one of consequence supports the candidacy of Joe Sestak. The reason: Joe Sestak is unworthy of their support.

Still waiting for that Sestak advertising blitz, by the way. And I suspect I’ll be waiting a LONG time.

  16. David Diano

    John-
So you are saying that the straight voters are ‘gay’ for Sestak? :-)

  17. HateSestak

    Apr 1st, 2010

Mr. Diano: It is confirmed. They have the evidence. The racketeers in question, therefore, are @#!ed. They are still trying to determine exactly who in the demagogue’s camp took the cash, though. Of course, it doesn’t really matter, does it? The end result will be the same. Good news, eh?

Shira Toeplitz at CQ Politics is now posing the same question I have repeatedly posed: when will Joe Sestak put his $5 million to use and launch some advertsements? People are talking, Joe…

  19. David Diano

    Apr 1st, 2010

I saw the article in CQ Politics. The BEST line was this about the firm, The Campaign Group, that Sestak has pinned his hopes (and money) on:

“The firm, which includes principals Neil Oxman, Doc Sweitzer and J.J. Balaban, has worked for every Specter opponent since 1992.”

Thanks to Sestak, their always-beaten streak against Specter will remain intact.

This is actually an appropriate endorsment, as Arlen Specter has been a Democrat that had cross dressed as a Republican for many years. Arlen Specter the “Queen” of San Francisco, Greenwich Village and New Hope. Arlen, you go girl!!!

When you’ve got to trall for votes on the basis of someone’s sexual preference, you don’t have much of a chance…. I am not sure the gays liking you is a good thing for getting elected.
Anyway, if gays are voting for someone who gives the most money for aids research, I think they have low morals and have no idea what voting is about. It’s def. not about getting yourself money…
