KUTZTOWN—With their contentious nominating contest seeming to tighten two months before primary day, Democrats Doug Pike and Manan Trivedi shared a stage Monday night for their third debate in just over a month.

Their debate, an affable affair at Kutztown University here, touched on everything from the health care legislation on the verge of becoming law and policies for job creation, to the war in Afghanistan and trade policies with China. With not much of an ideological gap between the two candidates, they were unified in their opposition to incumbent Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6).

“Republicans like Gerlach sold their souls to Bush and they don’t have the decency to help President Obama,” Pike, a former Inquirer editorial writer, said at one point. “They are truly the Party of No.”

Perhaps the starkest contrast between the two came on Afghanistan. Pike lauded President Obama for hinging his troop buildup there on a timeline for withdrawal, but Trivedi said he opposed the so-called “surge” of 30,000 troops, saying the money should be spent domestically.

Both candidates voiced strong support for Israel and agreed that a two-state solution is needed for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Some contrasts emerged in their stances toward China. Pike argued that the “fiscal irresponsibility of George Bush and Jim Gerlach during good economic times” was the catalyst for the development of “unfair trade practices” in China. Trivedi called on President Obama to “bring up China’s human rights abuses” as a way to open debates on international trade policy.

Both hailed the health care legislation that passed the House Sunday night, while also saying it could be improved going forward.

“I think the health care bill is far from perfect,” said Trivedi, an Reading doctor and Iraq War veteran. “I was on the front line of reform—I understand the plight of the uninsured. The key is cost, and what is needed in the short-term is a robust Medicare-like public option.”

At the local level, the candidates outlined plans for job creation in Berks County, which is undoubtedly Trivedi’s base in the primary.

“I am the only person—Republican or Democrat—to lay out an extensive plan for job creation,” Trivedi said.  “Jobs are the key issue in Berks County in November.”

Pike called for eliminating tax incentives for companies that move jobs overseas and reiterated his promise to voters that he would hire an “economic development specialist in my district doing, what they need to do to create jobs.”

In the debate’s final moments, both candidates set aside their minor policy differences to focus on a shared priority—defeating Gerlach in November.

“Focusing our fire to defeat Gerlach is key to giving this district the progressive representative that it deserves,” Pike said.

  3. hmmm

Pike’s best attribute is his money, apparently. Not his leadership skills, not his knowledge of policy, Not his handsome good looks. Real convincing argument for the public: Vote for me, I have money. Look at how rich I am.

Pike must drop out. If he doesn’t then I say he’s working for Gerlach.

  5. Where's the video?

    Mar 23rd, 2010

Yes, video from this event would be nice!

Apparently at the last “forum” between these two candidates, at the Lower Merion Township event, the Doug Pike camp refused to participate unless there was no video, the Manan Trivedi camp understood the 1st amendment and that since the forum was in Narberth Boro Hall it is a free and open to the public space and that it would be unconstitutional to refuse no video. So, the Trivedi camp was fine with our constituion, the Pike camp was not.

So, the very nice gentlemen at the front (from the Lower Merion Democratic party) asked that there be no video – apparently, a blog reporter named John Morgan was taping, he is from the Pennsylvania Progressive, and he stopped taping.

But, ironically, Mr. Morgan got his story because he then went on to write a scathing article on his blog http://www.thepennsylvaniaprogressive.com (check it out) titled, Pike Campaign Shuts Me Down at Debate.

So, how does a former reporter and Philadelphia Inquirer editorial writer, that’s Doug Pike, think it’s ok to thwart the first amendment (freedom of the press) in case Pike forgot, “Amendent I, Freeddom of Religion, Press, Expression (ratified 1791): Congress shall make no law respecting an establish of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise therof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The case against Mr. Pike seems to be getting longer – it is disturbing that he seems to have abandoned his principles that he once abided by when he was a member of the press.

Don’t get too mad about the video, it will not be the last straw of his campaign. In fact, this will probably work out just fine for Pike.

  7. Yeah Video Guy

    Mar 23rd, 2010

Relax buddy .. If this is your biggest concern you have more important things to worry about.

  8. Where are you?

    Mar 23rd, 2010

    John go to bed.

What I meant to say is, they obviously did not want cameras for a reason. And there were no cameras. Seems like Pike got his way. Not saying this is good or shouldn’t worry anyone, just as a sort Machiavellian tactic it will probably work. Voters aren’t really in on the whole election process.

  10. Where are you?

    Mar 23rd, 2010

There was a TV news crew there. I watched it on the news last night. Come on man stop lying.

Excuse me for not being precise enough and excuse you for purposefully trying to miss the point. There was a TV news crew and it showed a clip of the debate last night, but you cannot watch it in its entirety. You know exactly what I’m talking about and I hope you’re using an IP address outside your campaign HQ. Plus I’m not the guy whining about this, I’m just saying it was a good idea for Pike.

  12. interesting

    Mar 23rd, 2010

Pike didn’t want video because he wants people to see the commercials his money will buy that will make him look “smart and engaging” and not live video of how uninspiring he is.

  13. Video is above

    Mar 23rd, 2010

Well this wonderful webiste has put the local channel 69 piece embedded in this story…

it’s a nice, non-controversial piece focusing on Sunday night’s health care reform passage and how these two candidates reacted to it.

What I think 6th congressional district voters want to see (and they can see it in person at these forums or if there is video from these forums) is just the un-edited version of what happened – let’s get real we are in the 21st century and there is something called youtube which has changed the dynamic of how many of us get our information. Whether you like it or not, democracy flourishes when the truth is out there, video (unedited especially) can let voters decide whom they prefer.

The Pike campaign needs to not shrink from this but embrace it – if he needs help with his delivery skills (he was a print journalist) then hire a speech consultant or media consultant who can prep him appropriately. Trying to hoodwink the voters of the district by saying “we don’t want video” taken because the opposition (Gerlach) can use it to distort him, well that is the chance you take when you run for office. I’ve heard things that Pike has said in public (without video there) that I thought were strange) and a newspaper reporter can certainly take it and quote it – it’s basically the same thing. Video, in-of-itself – does not change the message – it actually helps spread the message accurately.

  14. Where are you?

    Mar 23rd, 2010

I’m in Steve Welch HQ right now. Hahahah.

Why is everyone so upset about a video when there was a rude, ignorant women in the crowd who took it upon herself to let her tourette’s get out of control! I’ve seen her and she prances around like some big shot Dem. and here she can’t even control herself for one hour. Someone needs to make sure she’s never allowed in any further event’s until she get’s her meds strightened out.
What a disgrace to the Dems of Berks Co. Keep her mouth shut and her comments to herself, Pike or Trivedi backer, she’s discusting!!!
