On home turf, Hoeffel easily wins MontCo endorsement
PLYMOUTH MEETING—Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel scored an easy endorsement win from his local Democratic Party Thursday night, beating out gubernatorial rival Dan Onorato by a five-to-one margin on a standing voice vote.
Hoeffel, who is underfunded and whose campaign has seemed lag of late, was widely expected to win on his home turf. No formal roll call vote was required during the county party’s endorsement convention at the Colonial Elementary School here.
“We need government,” Hoeffel said. “I know how to beat Republicans on Election Day, and I’m the guy who can win the governorship.”
State Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery), who is close to Hoeffel but endorsed Onorato before Hoeffel made a late entrance in to the race, said that Onorato, whose campaign has already invested heavily in the Philadelphia suburbs, was the best candidate to win in November.
“If we have a Republican governor,” Leach said, “Pennsylvania will be a microcosm of Tea Party politics.”
Hoeffel, who was also endorsed by Philadelphia 8th Ward in Center City earlier on Thursday, said he was “proud” to win in his “political base.”

Joe deserves this support and more. I am very disappointed in Leach. Onorato is nothing more than a pay to play corporate Dem who is pocketing huge sums of money from well known GOP donors from out of state. We need someone who will stand up to the back room boys. I will never forget our dear departed Lt Gov who said during the Obama campaign that Dan Onorato always did what the boys in the back room wanted. That is not the kind of Governor we need, Daylin. Not now. Not when the corporate Dems are selling us out on health care, the environment, and Wall Street.

If Hoeffel hadn’t waffled a bit and gotten in a few weeks sooner, Daylin would have surely supported him.

David, there is no way anyone could justify support for someone who is so obviously a tool of the corporations and law firms who feed off government and divert resources from the real needs of the poor. Daylin is working hard for someone who will sell out social and economic progressives at the first opportunity. Joe Hoeffel will not and that is the spine we need in our leaders.

I see how: by Dems voting their values.

I think Daylin is great. I realize that he chose to make his endorsement for Dan when Joe was still sitting on the fence. Now, Daylin is sort of obligated to grit his teeth and see it through.

David, sort of like gritting your teeth and seeing it through with Jefferson Davis rather than going with Abraham Lincoln. The kind of choice that Robert E. Lee made.

Joe Hoeffel has let down Mont. Co. Why in the world would we want him running for gov? In fact, NONE of the gov. candidates on either side are impressive. We need a fresh face, a true leader not a bureaucrat, an independent with no ties to either party to lead Pa. into the second decade of the 21st century, but unfortunately for us taxpayers/voters, there is no one that fits that bill in this too slow-to-evolve state and we are left with very sad choices. It is really discouraging.

Hoeffel will have a big problem very soon. It turns out that his governing partner, Jim Matthews has been fleecing county vendors for campaign contributions and awarding gem no bid contracts behind the backs of the other commissioners. Matthews has then been using those contributions to live high on the hog. All this happening while Hoeffel is off running for governor when he should have been keeping an eye on what’s happening at home. Joe trusted Matthews and Solicitor Barry Miller to mind the store and the two of them are going to be arrested. Hoeffel’s judgment will be called into question as well as his committment to do his job. This will be a club that Joe’s opponents will hit him with over and over again. Trusting Jim Matthews is a huge mistake for anyone. It is only everca matter if time before that trust is betrayed.

Jim, you think it is a problem for Hoeffel that someone else – the GOP Commissioner – has been fleecing vendors and contractors. What then do you think lies ahead for Onorato? He is the Jim Matthews in the equation in Allegheny County. We are running against a prosecutor and Onorato contributions from the disastrous tunnel to nowhere project and other no bid pay to play deals presents a prosecutor with a big juicy issue in November. Remember that Corbett has a grand jury out in Pittsburgh that has been sitting for a while and we have not heard a peep from them. This is what the GOP did in NJ. The Christie crowd sprang the scandal and perp walks in August and blew Corzine up. That is what COrbett will do.

The difference is this: Hoeffel will be hurt in the primary with his “Jim Matthews problem.” Onorato is hurt in the General. The Matthews stuff is beginning to hit and will be non-stop until the primary. Since Hoeffel bills himself as Mr. Ethics, the corrupt pay to play atmosphere he has fostered with Matthews will kill him. You see, Joe is a hypocrite.

Why don’t you mention Bruce Castor? What’s he been doing this whole time?
You are trying to blame Hoeffel for not keeping his eye on this while running for governor. What’s your excuse for Castor not keeping his eye on this?
Seems you are bit of a hypocrite yourself.

David: I learned of these allegations by reading news accounts of Bruce Castor pointing out it was happening and the controller saying she was initiating an investigation. A grand jury has been called to investigate government corruption after Castor has for months been asking for documents related to contracting practices which Matthews and Hoeffel won’t turn over. Make no mistake, Castor has been trying to put a stop to Matthews. It s Hoeffel that allows it to happen. If Hoeffel weren’t out running for governor he would see what Matthews is up to and between him and Castor, put a stop to it. This will blow up in Joe’s face at the worst possible time. And he has Jim Matthews and Barry Miller to Hank for it.

Think Matthews paid income tax on that car? How is Hoeffel going to back him on this? Now we know where all that campaign cash for secret no bid professional services contracts goes. It goes to pay Matthews’ personal car and personal bills. This is what is going on behind Hoeffel’s back while Joe is off campaigning for governor. David, you can’t blame Castor whois totally cut out of the loop, but you can blame Hoeffel who allows this to continue because he partnered up with Matthews to advance his political agenda. That’s fine as it goes, except Joe partnered with a thief. What’s that old saying? Lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas? There you go, Joe.
