A week before before Montgomery County Democratic insiders meet to make their endorsements, Reading physician Manan Trivedi sought to demonstrate increasing support in the area.

Trivedi, a candidate in the 6th Congressional District, announced endorsements from four Lower Merion Township Commissioners, including Bruce Reed, the body’s president.

“Manan Trivedi brings an unique combination of intelligence, education and experience to this Congressional race,” Reed said in a campaign statement. “Coupled with his familiarity and understanding of the issues facing our area through having been born and raised in the Congressional District, he would be a great representative for us. And once in Congress, his medical and military experience will be invaluable in confronting the country’s most important domestic and foreign policy issues.”

The announcement came a day after Democrat Doug Pike rolled out his latest group of supporters in the district, including Machinists Local 1776, Montgomery County Controller Diane Morgan and members of local township and borough councils in Pottstown, Phoenixville, South Coatesville, Spring City, Valley Township and East Pikeland.

Chester County Democrats backed Trivedi over primary opponent Doug Pike last month. While Montgomery County was once seen as Pike’s strongest base of support, Trivedi’s courtship of party rank-and-file, led by prominent former state Senator Connie Williams, has made it a distinct possibility that Trivedi will also win that county endorsement next Thursday.

Facing a million-dollar fundraising deficit against Pike, Trivedi has far more at stake in the local endorsements.

Jeff Harbison, president of the Springfield Board of Commissioners, and Larry Rosenwald, a former school board president in Lower Merion, also backed Trivedi on Thursday.

I don’t think there is anyway the Pike campaign could spin a loss of endorsement from the Montco dems. That would be pretty awful. However, Pike IS way ahead in terms of support from labor unions, which will play a big role come May.
