LEFTOVERS: Trivedi writes back, another DFA chapter for Hoeffel, petition signatures galore

Democrat Manan Trivedi has written back in response to Doug Pike’s call for a clean campaign, essentially saying: We’re already doing that buddy.

In a letter to Pike Tuesday, Trivedi said he was already running his campaign on “basic tenets of integrity.”

“I will continue to run an honest and truthful campaign focused on the vital issues important to families struggling in this economy,” Trivedi wrote. “I will present my ideas and qualifications to Democratic primary voters, and will certainly make the case for why I’m the better candidate to defeat Jim Gerlach in November.”

Trivedi’s response came shortly after Lower Merion Township Commissioner Brian Gordon, who recently withdrew from the race, wrote to Pike expressing support for the positive pledge idea, while emphasizing that he remained neutral in the race. Pike’s campaign quickly sent Gordon’s e-mail out to supporters.

Meanwhile, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel got another endorsement from a Democracy for American chapter, this one coming from Democracy for Pittsburgh. Hoeffel, a Democratic candidate for governor, said he’s “proud to know that I have the grassroots support of voters in western Pennsylvania who want to see our government claim the progressive center by supporting health care for all Pennsylvanians, a growing economy centered on the development of green jobs, and investment in education.”

And with Tuesday marking the last day for candidates to file nominating petitions to get on the primary ballot, campaigns continued to hype the number of signatures collected. Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey said he had submitted a whopping 16,000 signatures, while GOP Lieutenant Governor hopeful Russ Diamond said he turned in more than 3,000.

In the heated race in the 7th Congressional District, Democrat Bryan Lentz’s campaign said it filed more than 5,200 signatures, compared to more than 3,600 turned in by Republican Pat Meehan.

One of the points in Pike’s “pledge” is “Make clear to my staff, volunteers and supporters that they must abide by these same guidelines.” Pike’s manager used a sockpuppet account in the past. If Pike is serious about this pledge, he should get a new campaign manager.

From the Daily Kos, “Andrew Eldredge-Martin is the campaign manager for Doug Pike, a Democrat running in Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District. Drew, who has posted here as DrewEM, used sockpuppet accounts to post disparaging remarks about another Democrat running in the PA-06 primary at the Swing State Project (a sister site of Daily Kos of which I am the publisher).

As it turns out, Drew also used a sockpuppet account at Daily Kos over the years to comment on two other races he managed, Bob Lord’s campaign against John Shadegg in AZ-03 in 2008, and Chris Carney’s campaign against Don Sherwood in PA-10 in 2006. Needless to say, this kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. If campaign officials have something to say about the very race they’re working on, then it is mandatory that they speak out in their own voice. Pretending to be an impartial observer, especially for the purposes of spreading negative information about opponents, is a complete violation of our trust. For the most senior official, a campaign manager, to do so is especially unacceptable.

I offered Drew the chance to apologize, and told him I would include any apology in this post. Not only did I never hear back, but it appears Drew used the opportunity to edit the bio and signature line of his sockpuppet account, in a belated attempt at transparency. This information was not present in the sockpuppet account when we first discovered Drew’s malfeasance. (Drew’s behavior also stands in marked contrast to that of another senior campaign official, who, when confronted about similar activities, offered a complete apology”
