LEFTOVERS: Health care targets galore, O’Brien’s the ‘most competitive’ challenger

What’s supposed to be the final act of the Democrats’ health care reform push is yielding a bevy of targets in the advertising world.

The Times-Tribune reports that Senator Arlen Specter, as well as Congressmen Chris Carney (D-10) and Paul Kanjorski (D-11) are among the Democrats being targeted. Apparently the League of American Voters and the Susan B. Anthony List are both airing ads against the Democrats.

Meanwhile, Organizing for America is putting Republicans in the cross-hairs for its final push. The group, President Obama’s organizing arm of the Democratic National Committee, is having volunteers this week call constituents of, among other lawmakers, Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6). The constituents contacted are being urged to then phone their representatives to push them to support the health care bill expected to come back up for a vote soon.

“Unfortunately, these representatives are committed to opposing reform and letting insurance companies continue jacking up premiums and denying care to sick people,” OFA Director Mitch Stewart said in a statement. “Our message is simple: They can stand with American families and businesses by casting a key ‘yes’ vote or they can continue to stand with insurance companies and their Washington-based lobbyists against reform and explain that to the voters in November.”

And Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O’Brien’s congressional campaign was hyping a piece of good news Tuesday, nothing that The Hill credited him as “running the most competitive primary challenge to an incumbent Democrat in the country.”

O’Brien is seeking to knock off Kanjorski in the 11th District.
